ADS had many fantastic full sized home stereo speakers, but they also had some small speakers that were great for a small home audio system or could be mounted in the car as well.

I've a pair of ADS L300Cs in white. All of the electrolytics were replaced with MKP caps, and sand cast resistors replaced with Metal Oxide. Addad a cubic foot powered sub using an OEM 7" ADS woofer. They're a fantastic match for the Olasonic Nano-UA1 integrated amp (2× 28w into 4Ω). BW spans from 40Hz to 19KHz. Sound quality of these vintage speakers betters most modern designs ~ 9 out of 10 w/ sub, 7 out of 10 w/o.

I notice the market is highly bloated . Im going to pickup a pair of ADS L1230s for 450.00$ which I think is still a tad high on price . However I see them TRYING to be sold on audio market and eBay for around 1200.00$ which is absurd . I currently have ADS l300c and ADS l620s . So will see how much of a step up these 1230s are. It's funny I paid 90 for my l300c and I paid 70 bucks for my L620s lol 😆 the market is wildly speculative I think given price ranges .

The Minimus vs. the Braun/ADS results sound like a close shave. Pun intended. ADS is what Braun called and marketed their products here. They still called their shavers Braun here. I had the Minimus 7 in both silver and black. I also had the aluminum enclosed Minimus 11, which I nicknamed the Maximus. It was only a little more money and looked pretty much the same as the 7, except a little bigger. I think I preferred it by quite a bit. In retrospect you'll see a dozen or more Minimus 7s on the used market for every Minimus 11 you'll see. It might be that the wrong speaker became popular. I forgot whether you said the Braun or the Minimus was first. One was obviously a close copy of the other. Both had that small amount of aluminum cabinet protrusion around the front baffle. The sound would have sounded bigger if that was flush with the front baffle. The Minimus 7 had a bit of a soundstage, thanks mainly to very little cabinet diffraction surface area to diffract. But it proved that you could have a decent sized soundstage and still have miniaturized sounding instruments within that soundstage. The Optimus had no bass overhang because of the small mass of the driver and the inert aluminum cabinet. But the bass didn't go very low, as expected. The 11 went deeper. They came out at a time when much experimentation was going on with speaker cabinet materials, as people realized that the cabinet could greatly affect the sound quality. Celestion in the SL 600 & 700 models, used aerospace Aerolam material for the cabinets, with stunning sonic results. There was a speaker from Scandanavia which gained some popularity here called the Rauna Tyr. Rauna used concrete for the cabinets, and they were a good heavy little speaker. They probably would still outperform most small speakers even today.

Braun begat ADS, but it also may have begat the Min 7 (according to legend, myth, etc).

I have a pair of all original Visonik David 502, which seems to use Braun drivers. But compared to the ADS and Minimus, they're extremely inefficient at around 78-80Db sensitivity. But they do have extremely solid aluminum cabinets, as well as beefy drivers with massive magnets, and because there's no cabinet protrusion, very little diffraction if any at all (maybe just the screws). Heco marketed these as designed with the most prolific performance in mind if efficiency and cost weren't major factors, and I have to say they absolutely nailed it. You just need a decently beefy amp and you should be good to go.

I picked up a pair of Minimus 7W at a local thrift shop. They have wood exterior and are slightly larger cabinet than the Minimus 7s. I am using them for an office setup and have not A-B them.

A few ADS speaker models are 6 ohm nominal, some are even 8 ohm.

Good to know. Most all of my experience is with the early ADS models which seems to have been fairly standard at 4 ohms.

Very basic question - trying to reconnect some old Realistic Solo3b speakers to my receiver (got them used back in the 70s, believe it or not). Can’t remember which posts to use on the speakers- could you say what’s the difference between the “hi frequency increase” and “hi frequency normal”connections? TIA from a really ignorant audio user.
@stereoniche
@stereoniche 6 месяцев назад
Interesting. I had to find a picture to see it. Normally, to change the frequency, manufacturers installed a switch so the owner could tweak the sound, but in this case, you had to manually disconnect that little bar across the two right posts. Having three posts was not uncommon on early speakers from AR or KLH, the intent though was to allow the owner the option of by-amping, but I doubt many did that. The left post is almost always the negative, while the two right posts were POS, the center for Low Freq & the far right for Upper Freq. Most would place a wire across the two right posts, then just connect the POS speaker wire to either terminal (the Neg wire to the left post). In your case, I would recommend doing the same if the original bar is no longer there. If the bar is there and connected across both posts, then all you need do is connect your Neg to the left post, then Pos wire to either the middle or the far right post. Hope that helps.

Have you ever compared the Minimus 7's against the Cambridge Soundworks Ensemble satellites only? They appear to be pretty close in size.
@stereoniche
@stereoniche 8 месяцев назад
I have not. Since they are really a true Sat/Sub system (Ensemble), I've not tried them in a sat vs sat type of comparison, but I have often wondered how they differ. When I do another bookshelf review, I may slide in the Ensembles for a quick compare.

I had a 325es way back when. The one cool feature was having the tweeters mounted in the door up where the review mirror was mounted. Had a TON of fun in that car, BUT, it was also the most $$$$ car I have ever owned. It ate wheel bearings for breakfast it seemed.

I have the brackets!, and the screws, but they were meant for wall mounting and swivelling ... not cars? Shame yours looks so run down... my 3 pairs still look brand new. Albeit I painted 2 wood ones when black took over. Matches the metal mountable pair better 45 years later.
