Long story short, when I was in high school, I was digging through my closet, which my parents would use for extra storage since I basically didn't have much to stuff in there myself, and I found this blue book with no cover, titled "The New Joy of Sex" on the spine. It's literally just a sex guide, with positions, parts, precautions, and stuff like that.
I feel the thing with most violent video games and their appeal is typically how the violence is portrayed. In Grand Theft Auto, you don't have to kill anyone. You can play through all the games without having to kill a single innocent civilian npc. There's also the adrenalin rush of how many stars you can get and how long you can survive. In Mortal Kombat, violence is the whole gimmick of the series. It uses the violence as a form of art almost, especially with the Fatalities in MK11. Showing how brutal but spectacular so many of the kills can be. In DOOM, you are literally fighting the armies of Hell, there's gonna be some violence. Also, once again, you are fighting *against* Hell. It is the most Christian game you can find, that's actually a fun game to play. You're not killing people, you are slaughtering any Demon that dare stand in your way, no matter how many are thrown at you. Meanwhile... in games like Hatred, you're just killing random, innocent people. That's all you really do. You're not shooting rocket launchers at cars or ripping someone's spine out or blasting demons with a shotgun. You're just running around in public, just flat out murdering anyone you see. It's basically "Mass Shooter: The Game." It's like some edgy teen played DOOM and decided "this would be so much more fun if I was shooting people. I hate people and their happy lives. How dare they be so happy. I really hate people. I'm just so different you would not understand." The other games had an appeal and charm to them. Sure in GTA you were still a criminal but at least there were other things to do than just kill people. And even when you do kill people, the police are sent after you because of your actions. In Hatred... there's no real joy or excitement when killing people. You just... do. I think it says even more when GTA, Mortal Kombat, and DOOM are and have always been remembered since the 90s for what they brought to the video game industry. It wasn't just senseless violence, the games themselves were also fun and the violence was the cherry on top. Hatred on the other hand... is mostly forgotten to time as no one really talks about it anymore. The game was controversial for the sake of being controversial. GTA and MK have their stories and memorable characters to help them be as remembered as they are. DOOM has its addicting and fun as Hell gameplay and soundtrack that keeps it remembered the way it is. But Hatred, just simply came and went.
Actually the esrb does not play through games, developers have to send in a video of anything that could be objectionable. You can watch the leaked smash 4 one to get an idea of what you're supposed to do

Ah, Farenheit. I bought it and enjoyed how the game started. Was super interested in how it was going to progress, then deeply disappointed in how it did. Since then, I've learned that David Cage game means take an interesting premise, shove its head up its ass, and ruin any potential it had.
The issue with Adults Only is that retail stores will not carry them, and the major console platforms (Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft) will not have them on their digital stores, yet as we are moving more and more towards a digital-based market with video games, the industry is still shy to consider the rating as video games will always be a potential bugbear used whenever a mass shooting or a terrorism attack happens since society, namely American society, refuses to tackle its more pressing matters. However, in order to get that Adults Only title, you have to show a complete willingness to just go all-out in depravity, which seems like an endeavor publishers are scared to invest in, even for controversy's sake. Conversely, the Early Childhood rating was recently retired for similar reasons; lack of usage. Although games made for children as an educational tool are still being made, what with the 30 Leapfrog "gaming consoles" they shell out annually and subscription-based services offered by companies like ABC Mouse, studios didn't go out of their way to make video games with the intent on getting that rating.

Hatred is weird and honestly just kinda lifeless. When the initial shock wears off, what do you feel after that? Maybe a snicker from the protagonists bad voice acting? IDK. As for Quantum Dream and their horrible behavior, I'll keep that in mind.
I managed a VG store circa 2009. Parents only cared about games having curse words, which the publishers/developers knew about. So kids as young as 6-7 would get Call of Duty 3, Dragon Age Origins and all the other violent games.
I remember when I was young avoiding M rated games becuase it said right there 17+ and needed my parents permission to buy them. This is why I had little friends bc most of them played games like Black Ops and Halo and I couldn't play with them.
I think it's actually in Russia. I remember hearing that in a Thomas Game Docs video, and I think it's purely to do with Putin's stance on same-sex relationships.
It's almost comedic how rapidly sex gets people up in arms, yet violence gets a much more nuanced reaction. My favorite example of this attitude is in GoW3, qhwew I can graphically disembowel a centaur and watch the organs spill out in glorious 3D, yet Kratos plowing Aphrodite is apparently too much to be shown.

The third game was _Lethal Enforcers,_ which was in the line of fire not only due to its (at the time) photorealistic imagery, but also the Konami Justifier resembling an actual revolver. 5:05 While this was most certainly true upon upload, this is surprisingly no longer the case. (Not trying to give you shit about it; just thought I'd point out something neat.) In December of 2022, survival horror/JRPG _Fear & Hunger_ received a sequel, _Fear & Hunger: Termina._ I'm not going to go into much detail on either, but let's just say that while both games definitely earn their AO rating, they're are actually very solid games if you can get past {a} their staggeringly obtuse design that go against everything that you know about JRPGs, and {b} their content that's the video game equivalent of a dead dove fic.
So Hatred got an AO writing, but Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number (though getting banned in Australia), got away with an M rating. That game while using pixelated graphics is way more violent and dark than Hatred.
When I first heard of Hatred, like maybe in late elementary school, early middle school, I didn’t think much of it. Just some violent game. Years later, I hear more of it, it was obvious. It was only meant to be a walking evidence towards video games causing violence. This didn’t make me want to go out and cause genocide, this made me want to drive t the house of the guy who made this and give him a slap. This feels like something that would have a father spank his child. And who better to spank than the guy who tried to gaslight this whole thing?

Only devs I can think of who are proud of their Ao rating: the Huniepop devs. Then again, they had free advertising in the form of Markiplier, so they probably are still living comfortably off the profits of Huniepop 1.

And even if you compare it to the original postal, its pretty much just a dumber version of it. As realistic as the violence in it may be, Hatred's "more edges than an ocean of knives" attitude just comes off as plain off tryhard (and its hard to believe that the ending isn't some kind of a dumb joke either). Meanwhile postal 1's primitive-ass setup manages to be legit unsettling with the disturbing level intermission texts written by the protagonist, the droning atmosphere and all the abstract nightmarish drawings they made for said intermissions. Not to mention the final level is really messed up (less so in the remastered version, but their decision to change it to avoid controversy is totally understandable).

What I find funny is that all these politicians and parents' groups were so focused on dumb shit like Hot Coffee that they never made anything of the fact that there are straight up pornographic titles on PC that don't even bother going through the ratings system, and you just have to order them off the developer's website. Can you imagine the shitshow (heh) if they had focused on something like Starless?
There's also some misconceptions about Thrill Kill getting an AO rating. It ALMOST got an AO rating but technically didn't because it was cancelled faster than Projared with an alleged sex scandal! Ok, maybe not that fast. But still, its non-release is another reason to hate EA. Or maybe it isn't depending on how you feel. There's also Outlast 2 which was cut down to avoid the AO, but with how fucked up it still is, it makes me wonder just how much more fucked up it could be. And then Agony, but... yeah, the name's apt. The only thing scary about it how much of a waste of time it is.
