crosstrainingenduro.com The unicorn adventure bike! Light weight. Powerful. Great suspension. Is it really possible? Are there too many compromises? Many have tried adventure conversions of enduro bikes like the 450 and 500cc dirt bikes. What an epic motorbike. If you like dual sport riding in Australia then you might like our adventure riding vids. KTM should be sued for discontinuing this model. A Beta RR480. Big tank. Custom seat. And the light weight is evidently agreeing with him. I love the DR650. But I am seriously thinking of a new adventure project. Converting a big bore dirt motorbike... again. I have done adventure conversions of enduro bikes in the past. epadded seat. A G2 Throttle Tamer to reduce that 'snappy' fuel injection. As the tracks got rougher, they were incredible to ride as an adventure conversion of an enduro bike. But they completely sucked for road riding. If you spend a lot of time on bitumen, there is simply too much compromise involved. Lets start with all the good points of adventurising a big bore enduro. Light weight. Great power. Lots of suspension. Brilliant in gnarly terrain. What sucks? Road riding is usually terrible for lots of reasons. No windscreen. Keen on adventure riding in Australia? Check out our vids. A Yamaha WR450F. Cush drive hub. Gordon is in his late 60s and he's constantly searching for the perfect motorbike for dual sport and adventure riding. His most recent choices? A DR650. KTM 690. You pay for all that engine performance with higher maintenance. The short stroke engines with small piston skirts mean you really shouldn't ride these motorbikes at low revs or you can dramatically increase piston wear. There's a wide range of windscreens that can adapted for enduro motorbikes. There are even rally fairings if you want to spend a fortune. The G2 Throttle Tamer is brilliant for reducing that snappy throttle response. The road equipment is usually poor - crap headlights, tiny indicators and an ineffective horn. KTM 390. Husqvarna 701. Welcome to Cross Training Adventure, we are into all things dual sport and adventure on the east coast of Australia. And now a Husqvarna 501. Gordon's health issues have put a real focus on light weight nowadays. Check out our reviews of various adventure bikes and dual sport bikes. Added a one litre oil cooler. Comfortable seat. Next was the Husaberg FE570. Cush drive hub. RThe lack of a cush drive hub just makes this worse. In some cases, you'll have a narrow range gearbox which sucks for dual sport and adventure riding. There's lots of engine noise and more vibration. The hard narrow seats will see you standing a lot. No pillion passengers of course. The low stator output can cause issues if you want to run better lights, heated handgrips and electronic gadgets. And there are no quick puncture repairs due to spoked wheels with tubes. Cush drive hubs are expensive but reduce drivetrain wear and make things much smoother on the road. Sell it separately when you sell your motorbike and you'll recoup quite a bit of your money. Gearing? Ensure you have good wide range gearbox. Oil capacity? Choose a motorbike with at least 1.5 litre capacity if possible. Some examples? The WR450F sucks with only 800ml. A KTM 500EXCF has 1.5 litres. An SWM RS500R has a respectable 1.7 litres. No price announced yet but the AJPs are usually very competitive when it comes to price. There's a lot of talk about the Kove 450. The engine is based on the old Husqvarna TE510 model. It has the narrow range gearbox but an excellent oil capacity. But the price is brilliant. It's almost half the price of a Husqvarna 501. I'm seriously tempted to look at this as my next motorbike. A very similar model? AJP has announced the SPR510R which is also based on the old FE510 engine but with lots of extra bling. If they put a wide ratio gearbox in this could be very tempting as well. Personally I wouldn't buy a Chinese made motorbike until they'd been around for a few years and lots of owner reports indicated the long-term quality was reasonable. Also it ain't light. It has a reported 145kg (320lb) weight without fuel. What about you? Ever converted an enduro model for dual sport or adventure riding? Happy with the results? What sort of modifications? Let us know in the comments. If you hate oil changes, avoid the Beta RS500 which has separate engine and transmission oils. If you are tall you can modify existing seats with a wider block of foam and then just staple a vinyl cover on. In some cases there will be aftermarket seats but they are bloody expensive. Do you hate puncture repairs? Fit the TUbliss system and just plug any punctures in two minutes. Awesome product but expensive. I have it on all my motorbikes. But the good news is the range of budget models available. We already mentioned the SWM RS500R.

I can refute almost all of your negatives, Ive been riding my ktm 500 for over 5 years now. Fit you own screen, I've done it on all of my recent dirtbikes. Fit a cush drive hub(expensive but worth it). Get a Fueltorque mod to your ecu. Raise the gearing and fit neoprene covers on the grips. Fit a steering Stabiliser for better high speed handling. Fit a larger clutch cover for a bit more oil, but these engines can easily run 2500km oil changes for easy work. Of course modify the seat, but that applies to all bikes. Put on LED lights. I have a modified 690 and despite its assets, I prefer the 40kg lighter 500. I also carry my bikes on a trailer to get out of Sydney so high speed riding is not an issue. By the way, the 500 gets better consumption than the 690 and the fuel tank on the 690 is a PITA. At the moment, there are over 80 500's for sale on Bikesales and some great buys for around $10,000. By the way, I am 67 years young.

Very tempted to go the adv route with a 500EXCF for a few years now. But I'd want to start with a new bike and just under $20,000 is a bit rich for me. A shame when the 690s and GasGas EC700 can be as low as $15500 on the road at the moment.

HIghly recommended by many 500 owners. Rex will tune the bike to what you want, I had mine done for bottom and mid range power but you can get fire breathing top end if you want. They usually come lean as standard to deal with emission standards. He makes a chip for the 690 that helps bottom end response and deals with the lean running.

Stickin with the DR. Even with a 14t drive sprocket I still get 50mpg or more. I’m thin and old… no gnarly single track racing for me, and pretty much sub 200 mile day trips are the norm. When I camp, I trailer it to the site and ride out from that base camp. I know the DR well, we get along fine.

If one is a basic bloke, all roads lead back to a properly set up DR650, if it's your only dual sport. It's best to have multiple bikes to suit the conditions you will be riding. If ADV riding is the flavor today, I jump on the 800DE. If dual sporting is the plan, the DR is the ticket. If it's an all dirt day, my KDM XC250 it is. I would like to try one of those KDM 500 EXC-F's. For me it's not necessarily about the weight but the package. Comfort, power, and reliability. Loads of people rave on the CRF300 Rally, but it is only 30lbs less than the DR and barely keeps up with traffic. So where is the benefit? If Suzuki would modernize the DR or DRZ to what you can get with the MT/Ibex 450, I would camp on the dealer's door begging them to take my money.

A CRF450RL, uncorked and with an aftermarket ECU, could address some of the issues mentioned in the video. The LED light is decent and it has a beefy subframe for whenever you do decide to load it up. It weighs more than the competition, but that's due to things like the beefy subframe and emissions stuff. Still, it's lighter than just about any real ADV bike or dual sport like the DRZ400 or DR650. It has the wide ratio 6 speed gear box. It's not as good for technical stuff as a Beta, Husqavrna, or KTM due to the extra heft, but for light ADV, it's a solid starting point. Definitely would need to get an aftermarket seat and fuel tank and there are plenty of choices for both.

How often do you change the oil? A lot of Aussies were really looking forward to this model but didn't like the recommended 1000km oil changes. I do hear some guys extend this to 2000km or more with easy adv riding though. It would be great if Honda got the oil capacity to 2L or more for those wanting to do big miles...
@jwaller1327
@jwaller1327 3 месяца назад
@@crosstrainingenduro I change it at 1000 miles, I guess around 1600 KM. If I were about to do a 1500 mile trip, I'd start with fresh oil and probably just change it after the trip. There's an Austrian guy doing a round the world trip on a CRF450L who's been doing 3,000-4,000 miles between oil changes and getting away with it, so far. I wouldn't do that! The 600 mile or 1000km oil changes are recommended in case you're riding it like you're racing, and I'm definitely not. That guy going round the world was close to 36000 miles at his last report, no need for a rebuild yet. I'm getting close to 7000 miles, no rebuild, just routine maintenance.

it's barely lighter than the drz400e we get in australia, the drz has more fuel and oil if the crf had the same amount there's only a couple of kg in it. the drz is reliable, proven, 6k km oil changes (3k offroad) and has more power. seems like honda keep flogging a dead horse, the crf450x ran it's course, the crf450l barely ran but at least it came with a second ecu but that didn't stop it being a failure in aus and dumped at cost price, now they bring back the same bike but you don't even get the second ecu to get it close to drz400e power.
@crosstrainingenduro

Damn that's a lot of miles between oil changes! Do you know if he had oil analysis done? Some guys pay for this and it can be surprising how far you can go. E.g. the old Husaberg FE570. Some guys worked out they could safely do 3000km between oil changes.

The 500 is a great machine if you can only have one bike, have to ride to the trails or connect trails, and still want to do enduro. Though it’s not that ideal for hard enduro, the platform still gives you confidence that you can get through sticky section if that’s what the trail throws at you. That said, my FE501 has too much vibration for me to want to sit on / cruise on a tarmac road for very long.

CRF 300 Rally ticks all the boxes for me. It can do long motorway stretches, it is easy to pick up or drag out of a ditch and it is very capable offroad. It's not for people who enjoy roosting, an abundance of power and cross-county style riding, but it has enough to get up anything and lift the front, so it works perfectly for me. It is also considerably cheaper and undemanding, so I'd definitely consider it.

That ends for being very costly with a lot of work. Now we have a good basis the Kove 450 Rally for 10000€ in France, fully legal Euro 5, that means that you can register and insure it so you can cross legally the frontiers anywhere in the world, that's a very important point. All agree it's a well built and very able bike specially on fast tracks, it has been made for that....30 liters of gas, 2 big radiators with fans, oil cooler, protection, navigation support, in fact nothing to do except a support for luggages that you can buy for 250€. The Kove is rather able on road, able to keep 110 km easily, easy task as on rallies you have tracks where you have to go over 130 kmh and you can attain 150 on a Baja. For the price the Kove is a steal. The engine, the head DOHC modified Zongchen NC 450 is well known since ages, has 1.7l of oil, the alternator gives 300 watts and you'll find plentiful of cheap spares if needed. The engine has good reputation, has been made by thousands, and lasts as we on a lot of bikes as the Fantic 500 Rally, and plentiful of dirt bikes. With the Kove mods and ECU the engine is smooth and easy, making a 450 km ride, asphalt and dirt, a breeze. The maker is a big boy with 18000 employees. For traveling with truly off road capacities lightweight bikes without the headaches of modifying and testing, you have two bikes FULLY LEGAL for big hard ADV; the AJP PR7 made in Portugal with the SWM 600 engine (the old Huskvarna), several guys have made long travels with it, a Frenchman has made 45000 km trip in central Asia, and the Kove 450 Rally. After you have the 200 kg ADV bikes, some rather good within their off-road limitations.

I'm probably one of the only people who has done this, but I converted a ktm 450 exc-f. Put a rally fairing from ARX designed for a 500 exc as it was the best way to have some wind protection, decent lights, gps mount, keyed ignition and a few future mods. Got a kreiga luggage system which works great for enduro bikes and my next mod will be a decent seat and a cush drive, whichever I decide to buy when I get the money. I only converted this bike because I already had it, otherwise I'd have probably bought a drz400 or a 500 exc, but I have to say it does very well. I never complain offroad, and try to keep the tarmac to a minimum, though the Motoz tractionator tyres I put on help with its road sense a lot, and I still ride it along the beaches no worries. Bought a long range tanks for longer trips, and for multi day trips I can either carry 2L of oil no worries or just risk it and change the oil just before I leave and just after I get back. I'm not planning on touring the country with it, more just doing some overnighters or long weekend trips. If you don't mind avoiding the blacktop or just having a sore bum (no judging here) it's a great solution to buy a 4,500 enduro, spend 2k on mods and have a bike that can ride on the roads if you need and will smash any 15-20k adventure bike offroad. Plus, added maintenance just means more time in my shed with my bike, right?

Pretty common actually! Although the 500EXCF is a bit more popular. Is it an older model? The old RFS engines worked a treat long term. One thing to keep an eye out for... the metal on the countershaft isn't all that tough, some of us found premature wear of the splines with lots of road/adv riding. Can be worth looking at cush drive hubs and/or a countershaft bolt that minimizes movement of the front sprocket on the countershaft.
@HartyBiker
@HartyBiker 3 месяца назад
@crosstrainingenduro oh cheers, good shout. It's an 08 model with just over 230 problem free hours. I found out the difference between the 500 and the 450 is a shorter stroke and a slightly different gearbox. 2 teeth smaller rear the rear sprocket and I found a nice compromise there, but yeah a cush drive will be fitted pretty soon, money permitting. Talking about countershafts and front sprocket movement, I did find the old "crappy ktm dome washer" issue with my bike. It was a blessing and a curse to have that problem. A blessing because I was forced to put new oil in every ride, but a curse because I had to put new oil in every ride. Again, that's just keeping up with maintenance, and it wasn't long before I had changed the dome washer for a better dirt tricks one.

For me the CR box is manageable, unless you have to do bulk road miles, again i dont run a cush hub and use esjot sprockets on the front. Others wear the CS out as incorrect spline teeth measurements. Still add 5K to set up correctly and i exoect 30 to 40K out of the eng. 3 ring piston like the crf450L. People un the is have some hi mileage on them, but the swm does require fueling setup with a pWC etc. Super stable package, doing the csr area this yr. Top speed I managed to get was 155km/h measured by GPS. Very comfortable 4th and 5th gear for road . first 3 gears short for terrain . I'm just in the process of converting to a light adventure : 20l acerbis tank , led lights and led bar , comfortable seat (back wide front narrow) , low footpegs , wind shield . to do the trunk and I will be the happiest dual sport rider ever :) it rides very well on the road and the ohlins adjustable suspension from the factory off-road is just as great. I've found the Husky701/KTM690 to be my perfect compromise for weight, offroad ability and on-road comfort. Ditching the stock exhaust, and using an anti-gravity battery gets it in the 320lb range with a full tank. Not as light as my KTM 400, about 275lb with a full tank, but acceptable. Closest thing to a unicorn bike for me. It's not a great 80mph interstate muncher, but anything less than that and It's good for it all day long. Not as easy to throw around in the chunk as my 400exc, but more than good enough for ADV touring.

I did this conversion on a FE 350 and am really happy with it. I purchased the bike as a dirtbike, (non s) model and rode it only on trails for a year. Then after discovering ADV riding I added a wiring kit to add turn signals and brake lights, seat concepts sear, 2nd wheel set with longer wear tires, giant loop bags and a second headlight mask with a windshield attached. No kush drive or soft throttle cam. I am using the taco moto magnetic oil filter for claimed 40-50hr oil change intervals. No issues so far. Bike is healthy at 200hrs with multiple races and BDR's all on its clock. Im in a position to only own one bike so I trail ride, race and ADV the same machine and just swap in parts as needed. Its cheaper then two bikes and my one set of fancy suspension gets double duty! Road sections at 60mph are fine with balanced wheels for 30 minutes or less and it feels like cheating on the tough stuff along side bikes like KLR's, 300 rally's and bigger. On the side of a windy, steep and rocky mountain in Colorado, a tipped over 500 pound bike is a liability in my book for, light weight wins every time offroad! I do envy people that can roll the proper bike out of the garage without having to set it up the evening before but oh well. I came to enjoy the wrench time and find my gear is always in great shape as everything gets eyes often. I can swap all the parts in about a hour and only flip flop a few times a year for big planned rides so it works for me! One tip is that the KTM rear axle chain adjuster block has a long side and a short side. The difference is worth 2 teeth so my ADV wheels are 48t and my race wheels are 50t. I can change my final drive by just flipping the block, no adjustment needed!

What's the oil capacity on the FE350? I'm no oil expert, but I'm not sure if I'd trust the magnetic oil filter that much. Particulates in oil are just one part of the equation, there's also the protective ability of the oil dropping due to things like shear. A cheap guarantee could be paying for an oil test? It lets you know whether your 40 to 50 hour intervals are a thumbs up.

Reading some of your replies talking about wanting to adventurise a 500exc but the new ones are $$$$. Completely fair, might suggest you look for 15-16 500exc. Highly regarded as the most reliable and long lived of the modern 500's (600+ hours on the top end is common, like the rfs bikes), holds 1.5 litres oil, comes with a kick start etc. Theres 15-16's still around with less than 50 hours on them between $8k-13k. 17 onwards was a new generation with reduced oil capacity, higher compression engine and no kickstart. I've got two 07 ktm rfs bikes myself. One adventurised 450exc and a 525exc that i use more dirt. Both have oil coolers, hold about 1.8 litres in total. Love these bikes, will never make the mistake of selling them. Museum pieces down the track. Hi speed gravel easily knock out 600 to 700kms, but ive refoamed the husky seat. One new mod is the Nice cnc screen tower, stops some buffeting at hi speeds. Things that help: DIY seat cover from a camping mat and an old wetsuit. Sheep skin added for longer trips. I cut my own from an Ikea rug and waxed the bottom. Larger clutch cover therefore more oil. Rack plus exhaust heat shield. Its quite lightweight but does add a bit of reinforcement to the sub frame. Heated grips. British Army bergen (surplus) side pockets as panniers. You can fit a 4 litre oil bottle filled with fuel plus your puncture repair stuff in one pocket and they are cheap. Bottle holder/pouch from Decathlon attached to the tank plastics forward of the radiators. I use a little steel flat L bracket to support them and reinforce the plastic. The bike is done in such a way that it is easy to strip it back if I just want to bomb around an enduro track. Im up at 140hrs now and love it. Snappy EFI+no balancer shaft makes the TE tiresome on road,Off road-like a stallion in a field always raring to go! CRF is superb for on/off trips,not tiring,easy to ride ,smooth etc ,but lacks power to keep up with ADV bikes.Good riding skills mean mean you can easily pass the ADV camels off road. The answer is no company makes the perfect adventure bike. The ideal bike would be a counterbalanced 2-stroke with a wide ratio transmission and a cush hub, preferably air-cooled for simplicity and reliability. I built a work in progress dual-sport adventure bike almost perfect. An air-cooled blaster engine tweaked for better power with a dt200 first and sixth gear in a 2004 yz250 chassis, still a few bugs to work out but there's no modern 4-stroke powered unit or 2-stroke for that matter that could compare to the versatility, reliability and price point such as my creation. Can cruise comfortably at 55mph and still take on the gnarliest of trails with ease. 4-stroke liquid engines simply can't compare, the overheating, stalling and weight is just unacceptable compared to a air 2t, not to mention the excessive cost and complexity of repairs. A little skill and anyone can build a unicorn bike.
@Carlos-bp1vp
@Carlos-bp1vp 3 месяца назад
I converted an XR650R to a plated rally bike 'lite.' The issue for me is on busy highways. You're either doing 80+ mph on the left lane and possibly pushing the bike hard. Or you are behind a truck at 65mph, which is perfect but then people tailgate you. A twin just has the legs for U.S highways when you want to get away from the idiots. I have both and think the unicorn bike is a lighter twin rather than an adventurized single.
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 3 месяца назад
I agree, if you do a lot of highway I think there are too many disadvantages with the enduro singles. Although some guys find the 690/701 okay in that respect. But for most a twin will be the way to go.

I think the choice requires some honest assessment of how the bike will be used. I want a dirt bike I can ride on roads to get to trails and "some" short trips, so conversion is the way to go for me. If you want a road bike that can handle dirt roads and mild trails adventure bike may be best for you. My first attempt is a failure (WR250R), too heavy and low power. Now I have my sights set on the Beta RS500, not worried about oil changes, takes 10 minutes. I was wanting to look at the new Sherco 500 dual sport but they seem to have been delayed or lost in shipping or maybe just a rumor.

The Sherco 500 dual sport has been announced for the USA. We could always use ours on the road here and have a review. Good bikes. Main comment is I wouldn't call it a close ratio gearbox but it's definitely not as wide as the KTM, Beta or Yamaha. I spent a week riding the outback, annoyingly high revs on the highway. But first gear was still a bit high for the snotty stuff.

I've got a 24 500. All I've done is seat concepts, a bigger tank and bark busters. The rest is just bling to me. I have a 1250GSA and a wr250r so I have options for big trips. But cush drive, larger case cover for oil, steering dampener etc are all unproven fluff imho. Keep it ultralight and get the benefits of a 110kg bike. Literally the only appeal of an enduro over a bigger dual sport or adventure size is weight.
@crosstrainingenduro

Yes hard to quantify how much a cush drive hub does. But I must admit it was a good idea on older RFS engines, the countershafts could wear quickly with extended road/adv riding and the cush drive hub at least slowed this down. Not sure about the next generation KTMs.

I've converted both an swm rs500r and a rs300r. Yes, both very capable, especially for the price.... the negatives, the hot start issue is persistent even after map and pipe and is an absolute PITA if you get stuck on a hill. They run real hot under the safari tank, it doesn't take much to boil them in slow stuff, the plastics are absolute trash they rack if you look at them wrong, definitely cactus if you strap luggage on. The gearing is terrible for ADV as you point out. So far, I've sourced the old 510 seat and gone back to husky te plastics, it looks better and they are more robust, bigger capacity radiator and higher capacity fan, you have to go to a bigger front sprocket or several teeth smaller on the back if you intend to do any road work at all. The oil capacity is good though. Does it do its job, yes could I have bought a second hand low k something else that does a better job for about the same money after the mods..... possibly. Would I buy another one, nope you can't sell them on unless you give them away, the money you save in purchase over say a kato/husky you lose when you sell...may as well just buy the husky and be able to get aftermarket gear like racks, towels etc. Which are sorely lacking for SWM

It really depends on the type of riding for oil changes. I don't really do it on k's if I've done a couple of tough rides I'll change it or I'll go several rides on easier stuff. Probably between 1-2 k. Mostly, I keep an eye on the colour of the oil in the sight glass. I use motul with the red pigment. As soon as I can't see any hint of red, it gets changed!

I gotta say, that gearbox ratio is a big pain in the arse but it can be worked around. due to the ease of front sprocket removal, i just change front sprockets when i know the ride is now in the harder stuff. 15/48- road 13-48 for off road. i just change it when everyone is haven a smoke and talking bull shitten. The rest of the mods are.. Front screen off the Super Dual, Pivot Pegs, Steering Damper, Lowering link, Husky TE510 cutdown seat, Arrow twin pipes, USB charging, Cheap 15,000 lumens LED light. Cush drive hub off the Super dual, 20lt safari tank. I has fitted a Rekluse but found that due to the cruzing on the road it started to burn the plates due to the lower revs.. they say i can adjust it out but thought that the other issues made it not viable (cant jump start, cant lock the wheel on a very spot hill when you stall..). Over all it has been a great bike.. never failed me on the tracks, but i always carry the correct spares, (Fuel pump, Relays, Voltage regulator. Plugs 10 & 9, i dont run 8's also a J efi tuner for times when i want to run leaner Clutch master kit.. all the things that will stop me from getting hope. My bike has been called the Italian XR.. Everyone that rides remarks on how good it does the job. and the oil capacity is great.. I stretch my oil out until it feels that it needs it.. you soon know when the bike starts to clatter... Now I have moved to Mineral Oil (20/50wt). Aslo I had to run a cut down side stand.Another thing that they got wrong..
