I applaud your step by step explanation of how to blend on the petals ..you are so patient and calm as you give the viewers confidence in trying this blending ..I loved your use of the word "scrumble " with your accent ...thank you so much for the detailed info as to blending slowly and carefully to achieve the 4 pencils colors petal .

Great tutorial. I enjoy watching you perform your magic on the page. I purchased a 120 set of polychromos and I wish I didn’t spend $200 on them. I keep coming back to my prismacolor pencils. They blend so beautifully.

Claire, I'm really enjoying your videos for these techniques which are definitely useful in preventing me from defaulting to my childhood style of colouring which was one solid colour in each space with no suggestion of light or darker areas. Now, I have a Johanna book which I think is the Enchanted Forest and other than look at the pages, I haven't coloured in there yet for two reasons. First is the thick black lines which is typical of lots of colouring books; I want them to disappear after colouring and I don't see how that's possible to make them do that and the second reason is that the pages are so full and busy that I feel intimidated. I think I need to start small, like a single focus item. I've done that with some realistic looking cherries I've drawn from a Craftsy class and they look superb (they're on my Instagram) but I'm still interested in these beautiful colouring books after seeing so many gorgeous way people complete them. Thank you for taking the time to share your techniques. Take care :)

I like that you don't lay down a base coat like some people do. Seems to me it takes longer doing that and it still needs to be blended and maybe not blended as well. Also you didn't use a blending pencil do you think it unnecessary as you blend so well. Would you do highlighting on this page or do you feel it unnecessary? Sometimes I can't decide which way the light is hitting to do highlighting. Just curious, thanks.
@ClaireHoloway
@ClaireHoloway 6 лет назад
Judy Dick hi! I think with Prismas being wax based they blend well and vibrantly enough without a base colour - polys usually do need a base. I don’t often use a blender pencil because I apply a lot of colour and sometimes I think a blender pencil can remove colour. I’d only tend to add highlighting if there was a light source - which there isn’t here - although that doesn’t mean to say you can’t create one of your own :)

What sharpener would you recommend? I know a knife gets the best results but I don't trust myself to use one and my sharpeners are cheap ones that the leads get stuck in a lot and never end up that sharp from. Also, do you always recommend prismacolour pencils, or are polychromos also good? Any major difference? And my apologies for so many questions but I also wondered how large the set of pencils you use are, in order to get plenty of colours to blend with (so I notice you have three pinks but my current set doesn't really have three nicely seperated pinks like that).
@ClaireHoloway
@ClaireHoloway 5 лет назад
Wow!! Ok let’s answer these one at a time 😆 Tepoinn auto sharpeners are great - not cheap, but they’ll last ages. I do use polys sometimes as they oil based and hard so can be good for things like stonework. Prismas are softer, wax based. I must admit I do usually buy the large sets as I colour a LOT!! But smaller sets are great if you want to try out other brands xxx
@LauraBidingCitizen
@LauraBidingCitizen 5 лет назад
Hi Chive, I know you didn’t ask me the questions & Claire has answered everything wonderfully! However, I use polychromos, & have some loose prismas. Coming from a different perspective I thoroughly enjoy my polychromos compared to my prismas, I wouldn’t personally spend money on buying any sets of prismas as they’re too delicate, mine break easily (the led isn’t centred throughout the pencil which means it has a tendency to crumble / break regardless of the sharpener / knife I use) & causes too much wax bloom - so it stops me being able to layer as much as I’d like as I don’t get the desired effect (I also draw / colour as well as using colouring books so I’m coming from both perspectives I suppose!) With poly’s you can keep building up the colours & blending with little problem, & as Claire stated they’re a harder pencil (which I prefer to work with, prismas are lovely & smooth but are hard to keep a ‘point’ to!) I’ve purchased the pack of 72 polys from Amazon & that was on a Black Friday deal. I saved & saved, because they aren’t cheap but they last me such a long time! Plenty of colours to choose from too. They’re more expensive than prismas but not by too much in my opinion. My best advice would be to either get some open stock of both, or buy the smallest pack of both & try them out (depending on your budget). It’s totally a personal preference to what you end up preferring. Also, have a nosey at other reviews & colourists on RU-vid & their opinions, that really helped me with making my final decision even though I had open stock of both prismas & poly’s :) Happy colouring! ❤️
