Another video on slumping bottles. Yep, I know there are lots of them, but I figured one more would not hurt. Here is a couple of things I do to make the slumped bottles look nicer. Hope you find this video interesting and if you do, please hit "Like" and subscribe to my channel. Below is the link to the slumpy's site where the firing schedules can be found: www.slumpys.co...

You can buy dichroic film and it won't crack. The COE recycled glass is usually 82, which definitely will crack with a 96. I've heard that if you make any glass into a powder or frit, then the coe won't matter as much because the stress tends to leave the tiny pieces.
@CaptMike
@CaptMike 3 года назад
I too find that frit, at least in a thin layer seems to be more forgiving.

love the video. I have the tree of life mold for wine bottles. Do I have to use a kiln wash on the mold before I put my bottle on it and before i fire it?
@CaptMike
@CaptMike 2 месяца назад
Yes, always use kiln wash on a mold that will be used to slump or mold glass. Failure to do so will make the glass stick to the mold.

Thank you so much for this video. I am brand new to this, a friend just gifted me with a Skutt 609 with the KilnSitter LT-3K controller. I wish it was larger and digital, but it's not and I'm thrilled to have it. I found a video that showed me how to slump bottles using my controller and I can't wait to give it a go. I watched a different video where the man brushed something onto the bottle to stop devitrification. Do you use a product like that? I'm so excited to try and use frit in my creations!!! I'm so impressed that you continue to answer questions on this video, not very many creators do that! Thank you again!

Which machine have you used for melting and cost for it , please reply and is it possible to melt the bottle into that shape using fire gun?

I use a computerized Olympic kiln devoted specificaslly to glass. Any kiln with a computer controller will work fine. If you can get a flame burner hot enough I,m sure you cold melt a bottle, but please be careful. Rapid heating, especially in an unenclosed area could be dangerous.

how do you put a label inside a bottle during slumping..My step mom got a flattened bottle from a store with the label "inside" the bottle.the winery wouldn't share their secret but YES its inside the glass bottle...but how???
@CaptMike
@CaptMike 10 месяцев назад
If the bottle is slumped completely flat, with no space on the inside, then they had to have a lable printed on something like kiln papaer with high temp ink. They would place the lable inside the bottle before firing.

Captain Mike, I love that you want to make this journey easier. For us all. I’m learning so much from you. I’m a little obsessed with my kiln and my productions. I have some float frit I want to slump. Do you have a firing schedule that works best?
@CaptMike
@CaptMike 3 года назад
Dawn, here is a good article on float glass in general: www.glasscampus.com/tutorials/pdf/Understanding%20Float%20Glass%20Firing%20Schedules..pdf. If you want a texture effect, go with the lower temps and for a smooth effect the higher full fuse should work. As usual, run some tests first. Cut small squares of clear and sprinkle on the frit. For a full fuse with just frit, go with the higher temps. With the higher temps there is always a chance it will stick to the mold, so use plenty of glass separator.

I very much enjoyed this video. Do you know if there is any way to keep an embossed design on the bottle. It seems to me it would melt to flat, but perhaps you have a schedule that would work. Thanks!
@CaptMike
@CaptMike 2 года назад
I use one of the schedules from Slumpy's www.slumpys.com/Company-Information/Company/Slumpys-Firing-Schedule, the slumping one. Most of the time the embosed part will remail legable. Some lables on drink and beer botles will also remain after firing. Good luck.

Crayons are just a type of colored wax. I am sure they would burn up and cause a bunce of smoke and ash in the bottle.

Good morning, I’ve watch some of your videos and appreciate all that you do. I was wondering if you can melt wine bottles in a ceramic kiln? I can get a hold of a ceramic kiln very cheap I did not want to invest in a glass Kim because of the expense. Thank you so much
@CaptMike

If the bottle will fit in the kiln you can slump it. The temps for glass are less than those used for ceramics. Go here to see recommended temps: www.gofusing.com/blog/how-to-slump-recycled-glass-bottles/

Ginger, here is one option from Slumpy's: www.slumpys.com/Warm-Glass-Molds/Stainless-Steel-Casting-Square-Molds. You would have to use a mold release agent on the SS and kiln shelf paper on the bottom, but you will end up with a square piece. Do you have a tile saw? If so, think about cutting wine bottles and flattening them.

Hi capt. I have several thick olive oil bottles. On first attempt following the kiln’s program they barely moved. You mention olive oil bottles...do you have a firing schedule and /or video. They are square not round if that matters. Thanks
@CaptMike
@CaptMike 3 года назад
Make sure the bottles are clean and dry. I place them on the slump mold and start by firing at a deep slump (I use schedules from this site www.slumpys.com/Company-Information/Company/Slumpys-Firing-Schedule) Depending on you kiln you may have to start with a schedule that is cooler and work your way up. Bottles slump differently that fusing glass (COE 90 or 96) and your kikln will make a big difference.

Hi, I have some Grey Goose bottles that I would like to slump and keep the writing on the bottles. So far, the first kept the peaches in the background, and if you squint, you can see a few geese on the front. :D Doing the 2nd bottle now. We seem to lose the blue color at 500 degrees. Any tips on keeping the full color? We also use Slumpys guide, and the first try was the bottle slumping schedule. Thank you in advance!
@CaptMike
@CaptMike 4 года назад
All bottle labels fire differently, but all the colors will change somewhat. Some will burn off completely, some just partially. Try the lowest temps you can and still get a slump. Work up from there.

@@blessedbloominghomestead9134 I usually don't have trouble with dicro, even in the Microwave kiln. Are you using compatible glass? Also check your schedule and make sure you are annealing the glass properly. Funny haw that works. No annealing is available using a microwave kiln and the small pieces usually give no trouble. Larger pieces in a regular kiln need all the necessary ramp and hold times. Check with the company that supplies your dicro and see if they give advise on schedules.

I’d like to paint on the slumped bottles. I use folk art paint. Can I paint before putting into kiln?

No, acrylics and enamals will burn off when fired in a kiln, however, there are ceramic paints available that will withstand the extreme temps. First you might slump the bottle then use the ceramic paints and refire. Hope this helps!

Can I flatten 2 beer bottles at a time?
@CaptMike
@CaptMike 2 года назад
Sure. If your kiln is large enough, just place them on a kiln shelf that has been treated with kiln wash with a large piece of kiln paper on top of the shelf. If you want the bottles to stick together just line them up sid by sifr. If you want two seperate flattened bottles just make sure there is enugh space between them so they will not touch when the melting is complete.
