I worked out with a guy in college that had 10 years training in Kali. He was deadly with either stick or knife. We had these training knives that were made of leather with a fringe on the blade edges. We would dip the fringe in colored caulk and fight for real 15 seconds and see who got killed. I lost alot. That's one reason why It's good idea to run if possible. An expert with a blade is almost impossible to fight without some degree of damage. An expert will hide his blade until he uses it.

I learned Yanagi Ryu Aiki jiu jitsu 45 yrs ago under Don Angier and I was taught, if possible, to not brandish the knife until it’s to be used. I noticed while defending against knife attacks in a blended martial arts school I am training in presently, I had a hell of a time trying not to immediately cut the opponent’s wrist with his own knife once I disarmed him. That habit was ingrained into me 45 yrs ago and it endured all this time.

I would consider this one of the best knife fighting videos I've seen.... and definitely the best for a structured regimented sequence, for regular practice/drills. I would however take slight issue with his view on knife grip. I often use the sort of modified "ice-pick" grip, where the blade is running down my forearm, blade facing out. I typically use a 10" inch (overall length), drop point knife, as my daily carry. I can achieve much of what he discusses, in the methods he shows... but I can also eliminate the number of moves, sometimes, with the ice-pick grip. By blocking with that forearm... the knife cuts automatically without an additional move. I can do something like move right to left across a target spot, and achieve a second cut while returning my right arm to the right side of my body. If I go left to right across the throat, for example, when my right arm is returning to the right side of my body... there is an opportunity for an additional slash on the throat, or a downward penetration through the clavicle area... which can penetrate the top of the lung, if done right. With a standard hold, I would have to restore my arm to the right side and re-engage in a new strike on the clavicle.... adding to the overall number of body movements. While I do disagree with him on that point... this video does show a great training routine for a standard grip... which I can admit I do not train to enough. So I am now encouraged to start training in that mode as well. I think the lesson there is that proficiency with both grips is beneficial.

I have trained with a knife in the various countries for about 15 years. This guy has some amazing points but him saying that the block are terrible in the beginning of the video is pretty ridiculous. He is right you will get cut if the person reacts much faster than the average human. But the block is not intended to stop the entire movement you are supposed to block a knife and then immediately move on so that you do not get cut. It is no a one time block and stop moving it is a quick block and move to disarm, attach, or run either way if you are continuously moving and not stopping every time you block you should not be cut.
@joecoonan3931
@joecoonan3931 2 года назад
Yeah...You must be aware of the possibility though. It is hard to move fast enough into something else and avoid being cut, especially against trained knife fighter. Try it and you will see. It is still very difficult to attach before you get cut even, let alone disarms, which are extremely dangerous also. Knives should never be underestimated. They are SO deadly in CQB.

Done the main drill a long time in different FMA Styles. It's a "fraud" in my opinion. Like a lot of FMA drills, it teaches by mistake. Why it's not good to cut and leave the arm, you can see even in their arm sparring. Your enemy has to leave your blade with his arm. Fencing helmets are a must for knive spar. The throat and the eyes change everything. As does pressure. " I WILL GET THERE". The third hand is not only to "check" for safety but to enhance, because of the weak lever your blade is compared to your forearm.

The only gripe is in sumbrada you’re probably close enough to just go for the body so why bother cutting the limbs
@Ten_Mil_Will
@Ten_Mil_Will 2 месяца назад
Excellent question! There is a big difference between "delayed lethality" and "instant incapacitation". Many folks have no idea they've been stabbed. Even if they are gonna die 20 seconds from now, that is still 20 seconds of them trying to hurt you. Whereas having the tendons successfully severed can render an arm USELESS IMMEDIATELY. The ones on the inside of the wrist are used for closing the hand which is needed for holding a knife. The one behind the elbow can prevent them from extending their arm 👍 Basically - Their arm is more of a threat than their torso. Now there can be a "physiological" reaction to being stabbed but that isn't always a guarantee. Look up "Michael Janich". He has much better explanations than I do. Attending his "camp" had been on my bucket list for a long time.
@georgieman1910
@georgieman1910 2 месяца назад
@@Ten_Mil_Will good point, severing the anatomical mechanisms that make a limb function. BUT say we are talking about the middle of winter. Attacker has heavy clothing, gloves etc. how well will those slashes do against that if it could even penetrate? This is conceivable with a large heavy bolo where you can amputate the entire hand. With a small blade, how will that work? I have also witnessed people condition themselves to the point from training that they are still trying to cut limbs from a foot away when they should be clinching or locking or going for the body.
@Ten_Mil_Will
@Ten_Mil_Will 2 месяца назад
@georgieman1910 I agree and that isn't even figuring in some folks might even be smart enough to wear some "braces" (lace up leather wraps around their forearm). The best pair I've seen came from a K9 training store (serves more than 1 purpose). I think the key is to remember: "Plumbing, electrical, structural". Then pick whichever one is best for wtvr particular spot you find yourself in 👍

The reason is to help the people sparring hit on full beats or half beats. They use it in training sometimes in Filipino martial arts. There's another video where Paul explains it. Plus, Paul is a hip, hip dude.

Nice presentation and good explanation. 11:27 into video you’re using a “cross block” against an Angle #4 attack. I am a little alarmed by how much you’re bending forward to get the forearm of your checking hand to play its role. Wouldn’t it be safer to sway/step back as you slice his hand/wrist and shift to the “largo mono” range so a checking hand is not required? That would allow you to maintain your structure and not be bent forward and further into the attacker’s knife range.

Actually they make knife resistant cloths now. I am sure light weight forearm and shin guards made of aluminum can be made or bought. Even a breast plate made of aluminum. You could always duct tape magazines to ones forearms, neck, chest, and such and hide it all under a long sleeve shirt. Just don't tell them you have that stuff on. Cheat!
@Konstantinos340
@Konstantinos340 2 года назад
@@deafsmith1006 the duct tape magazines works, also plates made from floor tiles are good for knives, but and this is a huge BUT, knives move too fast man you can only stop the attack if you have a knife and the other person sees it so they slow down a bit. Knives are dangerous as fuck.

No, there are some solid FMA concepts in this video. Paul knows what he is talking about. Try to remember - DRILLING does not look the same as FIGHTING. This would be like watching a boxer hit a speed bag and saying "that wouldn't work in a real fight".
