Basic Nitrox certification allows you to use up to 40% O2 content in your breathing gas. But what if you want more? Why would you need more? Advanced Nitrox has the answers. One of the foundational technical diver training courses, Advanced Nitrox teaches the skills and knowledge needed to handle, analyze, plan and dive with O2 mixes from air up to pure O2.

I just finished my advanced nitrox and decompression procedures course together and my mind was blown! Tech diving is a huge step from recreational diving! I would highly recommend it! But there is A LOT more planning in tech diving

I agree with you it should be 25 Nitrox dives, in newby and have almost 20 do e only 2 doing Rec Nitrox. Our SSI instructor front the training day was adamant to you do your own testing. And we rent tanks from them every time I pick tanks he g ok es me his tester and air tank to calibrate and my tanks to also test b4 I can leave. And we have a great relationship and I trust them, but he always said, you always test your tanks and equipment in general. It is becoming a habit, they are very concious about everything, makes me feel safe and secure on what we do and what we learned. But to the point I can't say I'm experienced enough to do an advance nitric Edith just a few dives, i can see how my experience is leveling with each regular dives. Great video James as always.

Agreed, combining advanced nitrox with deco procedures is highly recommended. Not only does that get you to 150 feet but also teaches you how to use those richer mixes to deco out from that depth. Sure, you could dive Elbow reef (a shallow reef off key largo) with about 75%as your best mix, but it’s more useful for longer, deeper dives. So. Much. Math. If you’re a diver who geeked out over the math (I resembled that remark) from the basic nitrox course (not computer nitrox, full nitrox) then you are the type of diver who will LOVE these tech courses. Naturally, it will be time to move into CCR after these. Safe diving all.

Thanks James, great video as always. One distracting thing though... what are you looking at to your right and left?! I kept imagining that the "cameraman" was holding you hostage and making you make this video, you glancing around trying to determine how you were going to escape! Yes, I have taken the Advanced Nitrox course, in concert with Advanced Wreck and Deco Procedures. Awesome, challenging course. I found that Deco Procedures was the most challenging part of the whole course. I'm a better more knowledgeable diver with this knowledge and training. Well worth the cost.

@@MrGustavodepinho i believe that it’s 40 meters, it’s essentially (if I understand it right) diving with doubles and deco procedures. I could be wrong, probably am. But that’s what i understand it to be

@@AndrewR74 that's exactly right. It's first course of 3 that encompasses the 'PADI Tech Rec' I(ntro/45/50). First is Intro Course and mostly academic around gas and physiology wit practical pool intro with twinset and gas shut down drills with deco bottle containing 21%. It's still a no decompression dive course, but practicing like it wasn't. Ahead of next course Tech 45 which is then a decompression dive.

@@garethmallon-curley1240 Tec 40 allows for 10 min deco and a single deco cylinder containing upto 50%. It does not allow accellerated deco, so even though you'll breathe a 50% mix during deco, your computer and planning tables will still assume 21%. It doesn't have to be done on a twinset, can be sidemount too.

For the transition to tech diving, this course will be mandatory. Dealing with increased nitrogen uptake, accelerating offgasing by EAN50 is a good safety enhancement. Even though this course on its own doesn’t allow you to do anything beyond rec limits, it does allow you to do tech diving on a safer manner once you‘ve completed those courses.

In my opinion this course doesn't make any sense without pairing it with "Deco procedures" class. You would be allowed to carry a second gas, but you won't know how to make a gas change...

The part where you talk about the agencies is exactly the reason I've choose to go down the tec diver route rather than divemaster and instructer I have no interest of becoming part of there pyramid scheme just want to become a better diver 👌

James could you do a video on why you choose to do open circuit vs CCR for technical diving ? I am unsure which route to go but leaning more towards CCR

This is what I've been told and it seems to make sense: If you're going to go deep and use trimix, it is going to save you money to use CCR as you need a lot less gas. For me, 45m is not worth switching to CCR. If I really like tech diving and do extended range (55m) and still want to go deeper than I'll make the switch to CCR

Both, a CCR diver on bail out is in OC diver. But if they don't have the ingrained skills of bottle management they are a poor OC diver when they need it the most.

What’s your opinion on relying on a dive shops analyzer vs investing and maintaining your own if you are only certified to 40%? We analyze our own tanks, but it using a piece of equipment that lives out in the elements as compared to the padded Pelican case most people I’ve see use seems suspect.

@S M that was exactly why it worried me after getting there and finding out what theirs looked like. It did calibrate correctly, but it still created doubt. I’ve been looking at reviews of different analyzers trying to find a balance between it lasting a long time and not having overpriced O2 sensors.

First I find a nice dome at 20ft that I won't get blown out of, I inflate my wing to stick myself into it. I then switch to oxygen and fall asleep for 15 mins.

Adv. nitrox is somehow a relic. It is much wiser to do Advanced recreational trimix course. Adding a bit of helium makes amazing difference in 40 m/130 ft: you really remember what happened down there. If you have interest to dive to 40 m trimix is the only feasible gas (e.g 21/35) and you would like to use 50% nitrox to shortening you deco time.

Rubbish. Narcosis loading is a personal thing and a choice to make for the diver. I'm perfectly happy diving 55m on air. Many aren't. The difference is that i'll never tell anyone that they need less helium. Where as the proponents of the high He content will forever preach that everyone needs to dive He below 40m. With my Tmx courses, we vary the He content during the course and debrief in a way that allows the diver to choose their own level.

He teaches under the TDI system, as such AN is a requirement to taking Helitrox, which is TDI recreational Trimix course. And I would be using 100% or 80% for deco, only bringing 50% if it saves at least 15 minutes of deco.

@@ryanholden7287 Depends where you are. Here in Cave Country if you are an occasional trimix OC doesn't hurt as much. $200 or so for the dive, half that if you have dedicated trimix tanks. Which is fine if you just want to poke into Eagle's Nest or Lower Orange Grove once a year or so. OTOH if you are doing trimix dives more often that adds up.

Going to take the Advanced Nitrox course in conjunction with Helitrox Decompression Procedures in May. With narcosis starting to become a significant concern at 100 ft on air, and at a depth of 150 ft, we can't use high levels of oxygen, narcosis was a concern I brought up to the dive shop I go to. So they mentioned Helitrox deco procedures. Do you recommend the Adv Nitrox/Helitrox combo?

@@brandonsdi helitrox is helitrox decompression. It's an upgraded version. Pretty much the same skills, but with up to 35% helium. TDI, Deco and Helitrox are the same level.
