I was gifted a lovely adult coloring book, but the illustrations were such that I didn't really know how to use it. NOW I KNOW!!! The whole book is going to be devoted to practicing your instruction! I can't wait to get started! Today's lesson: A full page of raspberries on stems and leaves, some in pencil and some in color, making all kinds of shadows and dimension which aren't in the picture yet. Thanks for the idea! And, YES! --definitely a "Light" tutorial, please!

My fiancé passed away almost exactly a year ago and pretty much isolated myself for 6 months. I finally decided to try to “art therapy” myself to cope with paralyzing grief. I started to watch as many art tutorials possible and while I’ve learned a lot - I often lose interest after only a few minutes. YOU though are a great teacher and keep me engaged and interested from start to finish. How did I only just find you?!?! I subscribe to many art channels but Jazza, Moriah Elizabeth and now YOU have helped me more than anyone. Thank you ❤️ I’m going to tell as many people as I can to subscribe to your channel 🤞🏻☺️

Now I can use the few graphite pencils I own for more than cleaning my pencil sharpener blades. 🙂 Going to pick a couple of pictures and practice. Thank you so much for this video. I’m getting ready to color the compasses in Kirby’s World Within Worlds and the one in Basford’s Enchanted Forest. Most colorists seem to ignore shadows in these pages so they look flat. I wanted that 3D look and found this video. I struggle with shadows (nature skipped that artistic gene in me so I have work at what others seem to do easily).

When I was coloring as a child, my father told me to draw an arrow (in pencil, to be erased later) as to where the light was coming from. I was shadowing by the time I was 4. LOL

Yes, but one can come to rely on coloring books instead of pushing oneself to create one's own designs and outlines. When I find this happening to me, I free hand a small picture like flowers, seascapes or landscapes. They take less time and build confidence and exercise your imagination. There are loads of pictures online to use for reference. I usually go to 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 mixed media paper which I love. I buy the larger 9 x 12 size and cut it to size with an inexpensive paper cutter.

Funny thing is i can do shadows very well with graphite, it just wasn't translating to the colored pencils for some reason😤 I was afraid to color my drawings in for fear of them losing their life and looking flat. As soon as i learned to use 3 different shades of a color it instantly clicked and now I'm confident enough to color in all my sketches! Edit: to keep your phone on while referencing a photo start a long RU-vid video, turn the volume down (or listen if you like) and then pull up your reference photo, that will keep the screen on for you😁

A silly trick that I use is placing my pencil sharpener where I imagine the light source is. So if I were doing this I’d have my pencil sharpener placed in the top right corner. So long as my light source isn’t dead center it helps me visualize exactly where the light is coming from what the light would highlight or shade. Idk how to explain it really other than it takes away the “where do I start” confusion, like I go from sort of being able to kind of visualize it to seeing exactly how it’d look irl. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ Ik it’s weird 😅

What I'll take away from this is to not always avoid my black pencil for shadows. I come from a background of watercolors and was taught to mix the very darks. I've come to realize that's not always practical or possible with colored pencils. Thanks for another very helpful tutorial.
@waymire01
@waymire01 2 года назад
This may be more technical than you were looking for but the reason is that pencil is an optical blending while the watercolor actually blends on a pigment level and when mixed wet in wet two colors literally become a new one that is often different than what they would be layered on top of each other. Basically colored pencils are like painting in watercolor only by glazing wet on dry. In pencil black and white are just two ends of the grey spectrum.

Hi, I've always bought colouring books but would like to try buying downloads via Etsy instead. Can you do a review on what papers would be best for printing out these downloads? I really like the paper stock that is used by the Swedish publishers, which are thick and smooth with some tooth but not too much. Thanks in advance!
@waymire01
@waymire01 2 года назад
Bristol is generally a good choice for pencil. Probably a vellum finish. If you want heavy drawing weight look for 90-100# paper, I'm sorry I'm not sure what that equals in GSM. That is thin enough to go through most printers, but be sure to check your printers specifications. Strathmore makes a gorgeous 100% cotton vellum finish mixed media paper (the 500 series) but a paper manufactured near you is always the best bet for availability and price.

Sarah I have the color companion for #266 in Luminance but what colors did you use for the compass? (Did you pick another palette for the compass?) I read through the blog and all you say is that you "picked colors that matched" to the reference? That is a bit vague. Any chance you posted them somewhere?
@didilarson1031
@didilarson1031 2 года назад
Are these your favorite colored pencils to use when drawing/illustrating? I have not been able to love the Luminance yet...only have a 12 set so far. What do you love most about them? Also, unrelated to this tutorial, but have you tried the new "Brutfuner Macarons" pastel colored pencils yet? They are almost the same colors as the Holbeins and they are quite soft. The only issue I've had with them ( and I mixed them with others so not sure it was their fault) was some white residue left on one of my drawings. They are very smooth and pretty creamy once they have been sharpened. Would love your opinion.
@SarahRenaeClark
@SarahRenaeClark 2 года назад
The Luminance are still my favourite. But they don’t perform as well on some paper- in fact, the paper in this video wasn’t a good choice for them. For me, they feel extremely nice to hold and lay down smoothly, with the buttery blend of a Prismacolor but not quite as soft, so you have more control and can also do finer details. They aren’t as waxy, so there is less wax build up. And no, I haven’t tried the Brutfuner Macarons yet!

Hi there, I’m late to the party here, as this is an older video, but nonetheless wanted to leave a comment and a question. I learned more about shadowing and light source in this video than in hours of research on my own. Thank you so much. My first attempts were a wee disappointing, but there were definitely better than coloring flat. Now a question/comment, I was repeatedly told to lay the color always on the same direction - up and down or right and left- but you do it in all directions……. and produces gorgeous results, how is this possible? If I do up/down, right/left, diagonal on the same coloring page, it will end up looking like a 5 year old colored it 🤔😖
@SarahRenaeClark
@SarahRenaeClark Год назад
I always recommend changing direction. Even better, learn to work in circles. By changing direction on each layer, you fill different areas of the page and should reduce the obvious line marks.

How do these values apply when colouring underwater pictures? Skies are darker at the top usually, the higher you go is this the same with water? Or is it darker at the bottom? Light would reflect off the surface? So does that mean the deeper you go the darker it would be?
@SarahRenaeClark
@SarahRenaeClark 3 года назад
It’s not about height, it’s about distance from the light source. So if you are underwater, you would need to think about potential lights (glowing fish, underwater lighting) or if the only light source is the sun. If it’s the sun, you are correct that it would get darker as it gets deeper- just like you see in real life or in photos

I was using Derwent graphic pencils. They are a set I’ve had for years. I intentionally only used ONE pencil in this example. Usually a graphite artist would use a variety of pencils (Hb, 2b, 4b, 8b, etc) for the different values to create better details and contrast. But because this was simply an exercise to show how the shading works, I wanted to keep it simple. If you’re just wanting to practice like I did, you can use ANY pencil, even a colored pencil.

What paper would you recommend for this kind of painting?

I see that you have not had a reply yet so I will say that the best paper I have used are the mixed media pads. It is more forgiving if you have to erase. I tried color pencil paper and I did not like it, it shreds when you try to erase with a simple white eraser.
