I hope your channel blows up in the producer community. Any chance you do zoom/discord lessons/feedback/etc? This sort of info is extremely relevant to my current place in my sound design journey and I would gladly pay for a more personal experience.

Spent 1.5 hours going step by step and got confused but now I have something so interesting I’ll probably use it all the time. Thanks for this my dude❤ I gonna take it step by step again on my other laptop and try and wrap my head around what’s going on. I mean really understand and use these techniques on other rack. I get lost in what is happening to each perimeter after I get to a certain point. I Get it just not %100. Thanks again for this channel you keep making them I’ll keep watching 👊🏼

For that rack with the kick controlling pitch of bass, why not just have a single instance of the bass where the control is being applied to the "depth" control on the last LFO? Then make two audio tracks, one for highs, one for lows, route bass through both and set bass track itself to "sends only".
@pailiaq
@pailiaq 2 месяца назад
IIRC the reason why I used the noise oscillator thingy instead of just tossing an envelope follower directly on the kick is because it lets me control the release of the gate, which smoothly changes the release of the sidechain. Also you’d have to control the depth on all three LFOs, as well as be able to change what the max amount of “depth” is since we want to have that be a controlled parameter, so you’d need to use more multimaps controlling each depth and change the max amount There’s a lot of ways to implement the idea and I definitely didn’t do it the most efficient way tho so I encourage trying to find another way if you think of one

I mostly stopped watching tutorials a few years ago - once you get to a certain level you kinda start trailblazing and making your own techniques, coming back to tutorials only to get some inspiration to break out of writers block imo. Here's some tutorials that blew my mind and made me a better producer: - pretty much all of Frequent's tutorials (granulator, sine compression) - Dan Worrhal's video on haas delay, comb filtering and mono compatibility (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YDk5MKeYwkc.html) - House of Kush's compression series (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-K0XGXz6SHco.html), showed me how to properly hear and mix with compression. Easily the greatest video on compression I've seen. He uses his hands to do interpretive dance to represent compression settings - its adorable and it somehow makes sense (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--AEenzxWZnM.html)

Hey about 38 min into the video I think you moved the side chain to near the end of the chain. The video edit didn't show the move but I'm guessing it doesn't really matter... just a preference?
@pailiaq
@pailiaq Год назад
You typically want your sidechain to be the very last effect. If you put a compressor after the sidechain for example, the compression will take into account the sidechain ducking, which can change the compression algorithm whenever the sidechain hits - you just want the compressor to compress the original sound source, so sidechain should go last. In this particular case though it probably doesn't matter.

Hey man question, i cant seem to get my 808s right, after years of research it seems the problem is the 1st and 2nd harmonics of the 808s fundamental, i dont know the best way to tame it and just have it perfect you know? Listen to any of pierre bournes beats youll see what im going for in terms of sub bass

No matter what I do when trying side-chaining the kick and Serum, I'm getting a nasty click.... Can anyone suggest a fix for this without having to have an excessively long attack time? ......Kind of defeats the whole object of a SC if I'm missing most of the transient. I swear I've not experienced this problem to such an extreme degree before........ Also tried: Peak vs RMS mode on the compressor 10ms look ahead. Taming the highs on the the kick with an EQ, but again this counteracts the whole point of HP-filtering the SC signal on the way in.
@pailiaq
@pailiaq Год назад
That's odd. You can try using the live 8 compressor, which doesn't have any clicking when the attack is set to 0, due to some difference in the compression algorithm. sidebrain.gumroad.com/l/lqJxo Some ppl swear by using this compressor for sidechaining instead for that reason, hopefully that should fix it.

@@airfixx_8952 Guys - it's 2024 and there is a simple FIX for this ! (hehe) Remembering a phase canx idea from another of pailiaq's vids I added a 2x chain (x1 Utility on each chain with one phase inverted) at the end of the Operator chain and it worked... and then I realised that even THAT was too complex... The simplest answer of ALL!? Just add a single utility at the end of the Operator Chain (after the Env Follower) and turn it to infinity dB (!!!). Yep. It blew my mind too.... I was trying EVERYTHING I could think of and then thought about it and remembered "it is a DUMMY track after all so we don't need to hear the output after the Env Follower!" ...You're Welcome :) Subscribed btw. Realliy fun and inspiring vids! Can't wait to check out the Patreon too!

i've been playin with this all morning, I get tons of aliasing when the maxforlive devices are enabled, it might be saturator tho? haven't tested it.
@mafgar
@mafgar Год назад
ok so I've been testing stuff and it seems like autopan adds a bunch of weird aliasing harmonics in the upper freq range, you can still kind of do this with another volume automation tool, utility even works but the chain gets pretty complicated. Still kinda searching for an autopan replacement cause once you start distorting the aliasing gets really loud and bad, still think this technique is interesting.
@pailiaq
@pailiaq Год назад
@@mafgar Yea I touch on that very briefly at around 36:45 and just EQ'd away all of the high end. I can see that being a big issue tho if i want to use more than just a clean sub and keep the high end. I'll try some other solutions out and get back to you if I find something
@pailiaq
@pailiaq Год назад
Dunno if this is the 'best' solution but I got something that works - Make another operator playing white noise, and put the dynamics generator on that - that then goes into an envelope follower controlling a utility from -inf to 0. seems to do the trick, you just have to tune the gain on the envelope follower to give the same kind of output the autopans gave out before, and now there's no aliasing.
@mafgar
@mafgar Год назад
@@pailiaq Hmm yeah I was trying something similar but can't seem to get the variety in timing if using utility cause it doesn't have the 'amount' feature that autopan has.
@pailiaq
@pailiaq Год назад
@@mafgar @mafgar ah yea thats really annoying. Max volume reduction for autopan at 50% is -6db, 75% is -12db, 87.25% is -18db, etc, and utility has a completely different db reduction curve. Ableton annoyingly doesn't give you a way to modify the curves of knobs. I'm still getting pretty close/decent results though - keep in mind if you want to use phases/panning, you'll have to make 2 envelope followers for the left and right signal for the noise, and map that to a utility for the left and right speakers. Otherwise, a single envelope follower will just output the mono summed signal to one utility, which might be your issue.

Can anyone recommend a native syth that has the same pitch function as the one in Serum? I.e. Where you get CT-level variations based around whatever key you're playing?
@pailiaq
@pailiaq Год назад
You can use operator, and automate the pitch envelope % parameter, and then modifying within the envelope how much its supposed to transpose. Not as clean as serum's pitch control but still gets the job done - it has a very different timbre too which can be neat.
