After recently buying the ASL Deluxe box for an incredible price during the MMP sale, Ive been playing a few scenarios. I've enjoyed the games I've played on Vassal. It's different but fun.

For my ancient eyes that are getting worse, I now welcome new DASL map boards and scenarios. I even use Staples to blowup regular map boards to poster size which can be expensive.

I played Bout of the Century on Saturday at the SoCal ASL Club game day. Only my 3rd DASL game. I was the attacking Americans. Lost at the end of Turn 3 due to exceeding the CVP cap. I was too aggressive with the TDs. Lost two of them in the 2nd turn. Good fun.

I don't know, something about the hex size just never grabbed me. The 1/2" counters look so small. Good for city battles because you can avoid stacking (too much), but not my go to. Thank you for the review.

With so many things to acquire in ASL, one of the few things from MMP I've decided not to pick up is deluxe... though I admit I've yet to try a scenario. As you mention, just too many scenarios. Thanks for the coverage!

I, too, am not fond of the Deluxe boards, but it's a gut reaction that I cannot put into words. I started wargaming in 1965, and the only non-hex game I ever enjoyed playing was the original Gettysburg, but I ceased playing that as soon as hex versions were published. I bought Tactics II, but I never played it because of its use of squares instead of hexes. It's just a bias, I guess, but "standard" sized hexes are the only way for me with board games.

The original idea for DASL, as I remember, was to be used with miniatures. They actually had a line of ASL specific miniatures from GHQ. But it never really took off and it was a bit of an ill-conceived idea IMO. So now we're left with pushing around paper counters on massive hexes, which CAN solve problems with stacking in huge scenarios, but deluxe size board don't lend themselves to massive scenarios (like Red Barricades, et al). DASL scenarios are always small and a bit claustrophobic. So continuing to produce DASL content is a bit of an enigma to me. Just my opinion of course. 😁

I played a few deluxe scenarios about 18 years ago when Beyond Valor was impossible to get hold of. Inexplicably, I managed to get hold of SoF and HH for a song on eBay. I hated it because I couldn't get my head round the ranges, LOS, and so on, what with the huge hexes. I scanned the boards, and printed them off at close to normal hex-size, and the game was transformed. Although if you're used to making your units tab across 30 hex boards, deluxe ASL may seem a little claustrophobic.

I agree. Despite the convenience of not having to stack because of huge hexes, DASL feels claustrophobic to me as well. It's kind of weird.

I'd be fine trying more Deluxe ASL, you never know. One small critique of your new camera setup, videos are a little washed out, might be the lighting? Camera is definitely nice and HD, picks up every little detail, so clear.

I noticed that as well. I need to fiddle with lighting more, especially when showing white sheets of rules/scenarios/etc.

Not touched my Deluxe boards in years. Maps look to hygienic for my tastes, MMP should have included some rubble, & debris hex overlays

There are rubble and other terrain overlays for the deluxe boards. They came in the set when MMP released all the boards and scenarios together

I've purchased (not yet received), but don't plan unwrapping. DASL feels like a completely different game, one that is not necessarily appealing to me. The WWII foundation donation is the main driver of my purchase.
