Fantastic work, Neal! This is very helpful for new players working their way through the ASL SK series. The SK Rulebooks are so intent on being as short as possible that they often omit or rush past a lot of the situations you take the time to play out here. I'll send out an announcement to my community and direct them over here to check this out!
These are great Neal! I look forward to all the 37 episodes. Another thing that would be helpful is going through the "TEM modifiers" all by themselves, they are used throughout the game in many different ways, and give the number examples for them would be real helpful. That would be a great 30 minute or more analysis!🙂
I love watching you channel and really enjoy the ASLSK content. I used to play full ASL but stepped back and now I love just playing ASLSK. Thank you for the content.
Good video, thank you! Coming back to ASL after many years I will stick with the SKs due to limited playing time, and an older brain! So far, it’s good fun. I hope you do more of these videos!
Thanks, Neil! Very informative and very insightful! If you're thinking about getting folks booted on SK, another thing that seems to be lacking is a play through of some of the modules in SK2, SK3, and SK4. Would you consider a detailed play through instruction video for the scenarios in those 2 to 4 SK kits? Thanks and love your content!
It's not really feasible to do playthroughs of all the modules due to the time it takes to fully scrub and annotate instructional videos. Maybe one scenario from each module is doable in the future.
HI, I would love a series like this. Question: Would the squad in W4 be able to see a squad in W1 with orchards in-season? I f you went through the second starter kit scenario that would be really helpful. The one you did for the first scenario was excellent but there aren't any machine guns in that scenario which are such a big part of the game. Movement phase defensive fire and Defensive fire phase defensive fire still confuse us.
I'm sure you hear this all the time, but MMP should take the rulebook from SK#3 and package it with some US, German, and Russian troops and sell it as "Squad Leader". It is really awkward and confusing to refer to a basic version of ASL as "ASL Starter Kit".
I don't know the business side of "Squad Leader". I don't even know who owns it. Hasbro or someone else? So, legally, MMP probably can't do anything "Squad Leader" related without owning it or at least having a license to it like they do "Advanced Squad Leader". Note: I'm not an IP lawyer. 😂
An interesting and useful video. Thanks for making it. This is kind of unrelated, but I was wondering how you get the larger size VASL hexes. I find VASL a bit overcrowded since the pieces are larger in comparison to the hexes than they are in the physical game. Maps with larger hexes like the one you have here would be the perfect solution.
Starting with VASL 6.6.8 there's an extension you can install that allows you to enlarge the hexes by varying sizes. The extension is called "BoardZoomer" and can be found in the Extensions area on the vasl(dot)info website
Good call. They aren't in the normal SK rulebook, I think they were included in the Beyond the Beaches pack, but I have it. They might be in MMPs website too (pdf).
