Cutting thin strips for splines or other projects can be dangerous or an inaccurate process on the the table saw. Let me show you an easier way to perform this task in a repeatable manner that won't jam up your table saw.

I have to say - This thin strip jog is by far the best one out there. Functional and I really, really love the use of exotic woods. You have a gift for how you tie everything together.

This is an excellent example of the type of thin strip jig that allows you to accurately reset the rip fence every cut. I usually don't prefer that type, since most saws I've had have been on the cheap side, and the rip fences were somewhat of an adventure to get them parallel to the blade each time they're moved (cheap fence mechanisms, inaccurate T-clamps, etc.). My own preference is a crosscut sled with a stop to the right of the cut line for the width of the strip, but the disadvantage for longer strips is you need a humongously deep sled. I have seen jigs that rub the rip fence and duplicate this type of cut, usually a simple board with an adjustable 'nub' that pushes the stock (like the 'heel' of a 'shoe' type push stick), then you just set the fence once to put the zero-clearance left edge of the board the desired distance from the blade, slide the board and the nub pushes the stock, making identical strips cut after cut. The disadvantage of these is safety, as you have to properly support the left end of the stock so as to not bind against the blade and cause a kickback. I would love to see your take on this type of thin strip jig, if you're interested? You have a unique eye for design. I'm a recent subscriber, and am enjoying going through your videos as I have time. Great stuff!

That jig is a work of art...the knob itself is quite a turner ! I think the miter slot bar is quite short and would prefer one longer than the jig is wide. Maybe your bar has no play in it but I know mine would. I also would stick some cheap digital callipers instead of that rough scale to be able to zero out and measure in metric or imperial depending on my preference of the day. Cool build though !

I simply make very thin push blocks and find it to be no problem at all to make thin strips between my fence and saw blade. I have no trouble at all making 1/8 inch thick strips. Your jig is nice but you still have to dial in a precise measurement each time which is nearly impossible.
@kevinmcneill468
@kevinmcneill468 3 года назад
The final jig is beautiful but you still have to move the fence. For a long time I was building small boats and needed to cut lots of thin strips as much as ten feet long. I built a wooden fence that clamped to the actual fence, added a couple of kickback fingers and I could cut thin strips all day long always the same thickness.

That jig is almost too pretty to use! Great idea and build! I have a thought on getting your scale zeroed out exactly if someone is building one of these...leave your end longer than it needs to be and zero out your scale on the marker, unlock the jig but keep it snug in the miter slot so it doesn't have any side to side play, slide the jig up the miter slot and cut the end of the jig off. Then you know it is truly zeroed out.

EXCEPTIONAL idea! ( AND craftsmanship in the end result!) - your workmanship rivals that of a fine antique Chris Craft speedster! May I suggest in future jigs of any type that you use ALL BRASS hardware/fasteners whenever possible : saves ruining a $$$ carbide tipped saw blade - should you ever miscalculate & have a blade strike! : another great jig material is using nylon cutting boards - although not as rich looking as quality woods, they are inert to dampness, splitting, & decay!!. Next time you wish to glue up on your saw table, simply give table a generous swiping of paraffin wax before gluing (wax will act as a mold-release compound, to keep glue from sticking to table)...

I like your final Jig; but you aware you can make Saw-Blade-Width splines with a MUCH easier method? Use your cross-cut sled, and a stop block the height of your spline material. Run spline material up to stop block, placing material VERTICALLY. Adjust blade height to JUST material thickness. Make cut. Now, place material's newly cut edge against stop block, FLAT. Now cut your spline. Resulting spline will EXACTLY equal your saw blade's width. You're welcome.
