Another day on my course with Adventure Flying - from the Chabre and the surrounding area near Laragne in France.
Here we discuss taking off - which is REALLY important as it's one of the points where you are close to something to crash into - the ground.
Perfect take-off demonstrated by Gerolf Heinrichs and the technique discussed in detail by myself and other pilots.

You can’t “run like buggery” If your wing is producing a ton of drag with the nose pitched up. So, keeping your wing parallel to the surface you are running on is absolutely vital to good acceleration and a safe launch. Love your vids. I am a subscriber.

You're absolutely right! I should change my narrative to 'run like buggery with the wing parallel to the slope'! Thanks for subscribing 😃

Great cautionary video. My turn to return the favor. Those floppy bootlaces prominently displayed at: 6:51 will eventually ruin your day during launch, landing or in flight. They can loosen during your run and trip you or loosen in flight and trip you on landing. They may jam your harness zipper as well. Please consider shortening the laces or taking up the slack. Alternately you can secure the long lace loops with a wrap of elastic or even use gaffers tape as some pilots. Thanks for supporting my local manufacturer. I live 25 minutes away. Cheers, Jonathan

Good point Vicarious Icarus.. and you're right - I did actually nearly have a trainer come off in Macedonia when it caught on my harness during my run. I'll take that on board, thank you :-)

Hi there Darren and Friends, Thank you Your advice on take off!!, my take offs have been pretty good so far, but You can never be too care full!!. One can still learn from others and Pros Like You and Your Friends and Veterans. I personally appreciate and take note of All You Guys advice!!, Thank You Guys, and keep up the Epic Flying that You All do!, I love watching Your videos!!!

Thank you Laszlo! I am far from a pro I'm afraid, though I'm also learning all the time. Glad you like the videos - I hope to do a lot more next year, covid allowing.

Nice Work! one point you can add is, starting the run too fast straight off the line will "pop" the nose upwards, acceleration should be somewhat gradual, in order to avoid this.

Late reply - sorry - but yes, a good point that I will mention in a future video. Thank you Yonatan.

I think many launch with their nose too low, increasing one's AOA must occur or flight cannot.. Thing is, hang glider control inputs are a direct, proportional reaction to glider feedback, that feedback can't occur if aerodynamic forces acting on said machine are not. I've seen plenty a surprised pilot try and fix that sad late moment in the takeoff when the feedback system rapidly starts working as advertised. The point is, fly the feedback before beginning to move forward, don't destabilize the system during the walk, jog, run phase with a jack rabbit start. Continously unload the glider (reduce AOA, I call it a progressive unload) while accelerating, takeoff when you're ready to fly away with increasing positive bar pressure (feedback). The PG's kite their gliders yet we never do? Kiting allows you to start flying the glider long before you even begin moving (sample the air with that feedback system strapped to your back). GA pilots are taught to fly the airplane to and from the runway while taxiing. Why do we shuck ourselves off the hill, so we can 'fix it' once airborne? Flying glider feedback even before beginning your takeoff run will save your skin. You may decide to not even go..

Interesting and detailed reply Glenn - and all very relevant, you are of course right. I've actually had some fun take-offs in strong wind, starting on the basebar and flying the glider like that right from the outset. Of course in very light or nil wind like some of these take-offs, that feedback may be non-existent or very minimal and you only really get it when you start running. The other thing I have found is some people 'over think' it and confuse themselves, resulting in things going wrong. That's why my primary advice in light wind is usually - RUN RUN RUN!! ;-)

Great example Darren. Of the first couple launches yours was best, your pitch control was better. That allowed you to KEEP RUNNING. Watch it in slow motion, .25 speed in settings

Thanks Tony! I actually was criticised for not taking big enough steps - I look like twinkle toes running off there. But it's because when I take long strides sometimes my foot hits the back of my harness - I almost lost a trainer in Macedonia doing that. I'll have a look in slow motion as you suggest...

Hi I'm from SA. Stared flying in 76. Last flight in 2019. I really enjoy watching your flights. A guestion? Listening to your vario. I know I cant feel the glider inputs and the.delay between the wing and the instruments. Something that helped me a lot was when I started tightening my turns quicker and steeper. Even in light stuff had mane low saves from even 80 to 100 feet. What is your take on this. Im fairly fit and miss flying greatly. Thanks for your channel 👍
@MooSurfer
@MooSurfer Год назад
Yes I think you're right - I tend not to turn this glider quite tight enough. My last one (which was bigger) I comfortably turned much tighter. Go figure!

Hello Darren. I'm from time to time close to Bristol, because England has too much nice pubs. Anyway where are your preventet flight spots in England? Is it possible to fly in around Sumerset ?
@MooSurfer
@MooSurfer 3 года назад
Hi Albert, yes it's possible to fly in that area - perhaps contact Nick Chitty on Facebook who will help with sites in that area. Prettiest - there's lots of nice sites in Peak District and also North yorkshire... I like the Hope Valley in the Peak district best I think.

1 question please Do you use extra parasut for emergency???
@MooSurfer

Yes - I have an emergency parachute in my harness. You might be able to see the red handle on some of my videos.

Thank you, my instructor always repeat- speed, speed, speed 🙂, could you prepare some material about landing? I'm on the training and first high flying is ahead on me, proper plan and approach to land is scarry me.
@MooSurfer
@MooSurfer 2 года назад
I do have plenty of stuff on landings - but maybe I need a video dedicated to it. I guess it will be too late for your high flying, which you may have done by now (sorry for my late reply). Your instructor is absolutely right - speed is your friend. I'd be interested to know how your training goes - and see any videos you might have of it!

@@MooSurfer Hi Darren, the first high fligts are behind me :) I was lucky to visit Meduno (great place for training). It was first occasion for me to taste takes off in stronger wind and bumpy air :) Exam is ahead on me but still I need 3 high flights more. I put some movies on RU-vid: ru-vid.com/show-UCfBISryQMwUjpYO248UEjqg

A question, does the wing's C of G run through the same spot as your harness anchor point to the frame ?
@johannesbekker1970
@johannesbekker1970 5 лет назад
I figured that it has to or else a turning moment will be generated around the C of G when you hang in the harness ?
@MooSurfer
@MooSurfer 5 лет назад
Yes - you're right, so the wing will turn left or right when I move my body weight in the harness to the left or right side. In terms of how far forward I hang, there are a number of different points in order to fly with a faster / slower trim. This is according to preference and body weight. I'm flying on the front position because I am a little light on my glider.

@@MooSurfer Thanks for the reply ! I'm planning to get into this sport soon. What size wing would 65 kg person need in square feet ?
@MooSurfer
@MooSurfer 5 лет назад
That depends on the make of glider - but you don't need to worry about that just yet. When you learn, your instructor will recommend and help you find the right wing for you - based on your experience, skill level and weight. First thing though - learn to fly.
