I headed west on the Elizabeth Line from Stratford and changed at Whitechapel for the Reading train. I alighted at Iver and walked through the historic Iver Village, Langley Park, and Black Park, home to Pinewood Studios. My Elizabeth Line walk ended at Slough Station and I caught the train back to Stratford.

Those enormous trees are wellingtonias (sequoias ?). My father was a ranger in Langley and Black Parks and briefly a policeman in Iver. You went very close to three houses where I lived as a child and teenager.

A classic roam into the darkness … much my favourite time too get out on the bike … the empty country lanes and peace as the golden hour approaches and fades into darkness …. But don’t your feel a bit wary heading out into and away from unknown paths ?

Thank you John for this spectacular walk, brings back memories of my time living in Denham and travelling through Iver, visiting Black Park and all the other surrounding towns. I worked in the Slough and Maidenhead areas, then lived in Beaconsfield before finally moving up north to Wirral. so its lovely to revisit these places again through your video.

Lovely walk. I grew up in Iver and lived nearby for many decades. About 7 years ago I walked those paths, through Langley and Black Park and said goodbye and moved to a different world near Durham. This summer I've explored old walks through the City of London and visited favourites like St. Dunstan in the West and St Stephen Walbrook. Plenty of country walks up here but I still enjoy the City where there are endless places to visit.

John, do you ever get the urge to walk in the Winter months? In late November/Early December, on a day after a below 0 temperature night, my friend and I would often take a train from Aylesbury, and walk across the Chiltern Hills and through the woods from Wendover to Great Missenden. There's just something magical about crunching along through frosty fallen leaves when the clouds are grey and leaden with snow, passing through silent little villages like Dunsmore, and pausing for a while to have a snack and a quick skate on the frozen duck pond at Cobblers Hill.

I loved tha walk John. By chance or was it fate,i did 3 stays in west london this summer and I was fascinated by my knowing in rather inchoate fashion that there was a lot of 18th century history here and that somehow London ends and "the countryside" begins but where? I find that in most cities the public transport and other infrastructure is designed somehow to create an invisible barrier. I dont know if this is on purpose or coincidental. I rather suspect the former. I think some of the local residents thought me a bit odd, standing and gazing at 1930s semis. They could not know that in my head i was thinking of the 18th century. I discovered the Coln valley but didn't have time to do any walks. I went to Slough to see if it was as dreadful as the poem has given it as immortal reputation as. I even got a bus to High Wycombe. Whuch was not a bit like id imagined. I stayed one night at Slough (i never knew it was in Buckinghamshire) at a lovely hotel in an old would have been the Manor House or such. I liked that the courtyards and outbuildings was a little scruffy gave it a Sleeping Beauty castle feel. The actual hotel was top notch. My room was anyway. There was a park roundabout from the 18th C and a lovely rose garden now kept by the local council. When i saw i was only a couple of miles from Stoke Poges where that poem was written i went there next day. Who knew! Seeing as youve covered East London very comprhensively how about doing some work on west london. It would be a bit harder as those areaas dont have the universally iconic recognised images like Cockneys,Music Hall,Jack the R,the Krays etc. Be quite hard to film streets of suburban 1930s semis and make it interesting and historic but you could do it John, like nobody else could. The area i live is like that, loads of history but almost nothing on the ground to SEE. Just suburban housing from 1880s to now everywhere. No half timbers,no thatch,no ruined castle. Footpaths on maps NEVER are like that in real life.

I'm no tree expert, and it's difficult to tell from the video, but the straight vertical growth of those trees, and the grain of the bark, suggest they're not so very old Californian redwood.

While road walking in Tring, Hertfordshire a lady said I should have been walking on the narrow path instead of on the road for my own safety. I love road walking, however, but would not recommend Ashford to Canterbury on the road that you join if you turn right and left after leaving the village of Crundale and just past Godmersham. The traffic comes at you at speed in both directions with literally no verges on either side. Boy was I glad when I got to the end of it and took a narrow road up to the beautiful village of Chilham.

The Elizabeth Line has opened-up new territory East and West for walking and exploration. And, if you have a Freedom Pass it's FREE. I have frequently passed through Iver station on HST and often wondered what it would be like to get off at the station. Now I know thanks to your splendid treck. I'm amazed that you manage to stay apparently calm and collected in gathering darkness along overgrown paths, miles from your destination. I think I would be rather desperate - though I guess I lack the confidence of an experienced hiker, and probably some other things too.

Langley Park is famous, at least locally, for its Wellingtonias, (correctly Sequoiadendron giganteum) giant sequoia or giant redwood, native to the west coast of the US, but we named it Wellingtonia instead of, as some wished, Washintonia! The sequoia name is derived from the guy who formalised the Cherokee language. Biggest trees in the world, at least in height, and increasingly rare in their native habitat. Quite a few were and are planted over here, hopefully increasing their chances of survival, though we can never hope to match the original specimens for height. I loved the way you filmed them. Black Park was the sister, coniferous park to the originally largely deciduous Langley Park. And yes it is the informal 'back lot' to Pinewood and the reason my great-granddad picked the name Pinewood, to echo his Hollywood inspired studio complex. Most of the deer in the area are descendants of the deer originally kept in large parts of Langley Park. (Probably). The survival of all that green space between Slough, Iver, Wexham and Uxbridge always seems amazing. Sorry, but I was quite involved in the restoration/conservation of Langley Park some years ago now…

Hey, John! Thank you for yesterday's walk, so beautiful, and the light was amazing. You asked if anyone could identify the trees in Blackwood. While I'm not able to do that I did find the following entry in my 'Collins Wild Guide: Trees', which may explain the name of the wood. "Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon). Blackwood is native to SE Australia and is one of several acacia species introduced to Europe. Originally grown for timber which is used in veneers, it has become naturalised in South western areas." So it may be that the area of Blackwood was one of these plantations for the wood industry. Near to where I live in N Cornwall there is a magnificent oak wood, which was planted to support the Cornish leather tanning trade. The trade has vanished but the wood remains and is home to Yaffles (Green Woodpeckers) and many species of Butterfly. Hope you find this interesting. Sky xxx

I once worked at Pinewood Studios as a kid and spent a lot of time wandering around Black Park. They used to shoot lots of stuff there because it was adjacent. When you saw a horse and carriage thundering along the Transylvanian lanes carrying Draculas coffin in those old Hammer Horrors it was invariably Black Park. There was also the Brigetine Convent you could stay at just north of the studios and i did as a weekend treat. A lot cheaper i imagine than that swanky gaff you were eyeing off.

Magical stuff, John. As an Uxbridge boy, I know by heart all the places you went on this walk. I look forward to you going again to Iver, and recommend a look around the area of Coppins - a country house that has been the residence of the Dukes of Kent for many years. As a kid, my friends and I used to take our bikes to Black Park - so much of interest there. I remember, back in 1965 or so, we found a gap in the fence and got in to the back of Pinewood Studios, and wandered around the mock-up town for 'Carry On Cowboy' - great larks.
