Lovely work. Particularly like your basing. I paint and game exclusively with 1/72 in a whole range of periods and think it strikes the perfect balance in terms of detail and allowing a decent amount of miniatures on the tabletop. There is a huge amount of choice of manufacturers (Revell, Italeri, PSC etc) and you can get literally every vehicle for ww2 (I think I nearly have now and it’s a dangerous path!)AB are the finest 20mm figures around - There British Paras are also amazing. I really enjoy the PCP podcast and it’s great to see one of you dive into this scale in a big way. Looking forward to seeing where you go next with it.
Thanks Andrew! This scale has certainly allowed me to look at some more interesting themed bases. I definitely agree about that balance in scale. I think 20mm on a 6x4 table is going to look pretty realistic distance wise. I was really struck by how many manufacturers there are out there and the sheer amount of stuff available! Really glad you enjoy the PCP, there's going to be more 20mm content on there and on my channel 😃👍
Great video! It's a fantastic scale. If I could convince my friends to ditch 28mm and all take this up I would! I have quite a bit in 20mm painted and quite a bit to paint up too! More 20mm content please.
Thank you, much appreciated! I'd heard a lot about the scale from people in the community but, given my 28mm and 15mm collections, I'd always been a bit hesitant in taking the plunge into a new scale....but I'm certainly glad I did now! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment 😃👍
They look great Ste. It’s always great to get into a new project regardless of scale. You have done a superb job on the painting. Funnily enough I’m going the other way and starting a Bolt Action project thanks to your inspiring videos! I have just sold most of my 20mm collection and indeed still have some on eBay and will be adding more, all unpainted🙁. Enjoy your new venture mate. Cheers Keith
Cheers Keith, much appreciated! As much as I'm enjoying this scale, I think I'll always be a 28mm gamer and painter but it's been really interesting dabbling in new scale. That's brilliant, I'm glad the videos have helped! That's why I really enjoy the community, so much inspiration for ideas and new projects 😃👍
Thanks Steve, enjoyed. i have moved my WWII ‘back’! To 20mm. My Soviets are AB and the Germans are a mix of PSC and Rapid Fire. If I could spend some more of your money ……. PSC do a German stowage box and Rapid Fire have recently released their rules in a steamlined format. They are in an A5 16 page booklet and for a fiver, you can’t go wrong (available from Rapid Fire and Caliver books). Look forward to whatever falls out from all of this on the channel. Cheers.
Thanks Norm, much appreciated and thanks for the shout out about the stowage, that sounds really interesting. Rapid Fire is definitely another ruleset I want to look into. A few people in the PCP community play it and it always looks really pretty good. It'll be interesting to see where this ends up 😃👍
I keep seeing those Italeri 1/72 battle sets at local model shops. They have big Sarissa buildings inside like the Abbey at Monte Casino. Something far too big for 28mm but would be a good size in 1/72 or 15mm.
@@OnPointHQit absolutely would be, and Italeri do some great plastic buildings as well! It has the advantage of being a niche scale so prices are usually cheaper than 15/28mm, especially at wargaming swap meets.
There's something just visually "right" about 1/72, 1/76, HO/OO, 20MM or whatever you want to call it😂. I've been working on a First World War project with 1/72 plastics for years now and I love to paint in this scale. Your models look fantastic
Cheers Joel! A lot of people that I've spoken with have said that. Having painted these, I can certainly see why. I'm really looking forward to having enough painted to get them on the tabletop 😃👍
Those look wonderful and hope you find enjoyment from them, most of my ww2 is in 20mm with several battalions in airfix, revell or esci with mixed in metal weapon kits etc,the bulk I game with for a quick game are the original valiant figures which are not to everyone's taste due to strange scale at about 22mm but fun to convert and paint, some of my afvs date back 50 years from airfix but a quick repaint and good to go,I prefer the rapid fire rules as the books have good gamble orbits and great pictures, have a look if you get the chance.
Thanks John! In the short space of time that I've been painting at this scale, it's been hugely enjoyable. One thing I have noticed is the massive amount of kits and other bits and pieces available. So much to choose from. A lot of people have recommended Rapid Fire so it's something I'm going to be looking at 😃👍
Cheers Dom! I actually don't know why we make these statements about not getting into this or well I certainly won't be buying that....because its quite clearly lies 😅
Cheers Gary, much appreciated and thanks for the clarity with regards to the scales. It does seem that most things around these scales will mix and match with each other 😃👍
I do it all the time. A lot of the resin kits are 1/76/20mm. For example, Milicast makes some great early desert war British armored cars. Loved you video! Do more!!!! @@OnPointHQ
I have been modelling in1:76 scale for most of my life up to now and I have no idea, other than that is 4mm to the foot, if that is 20, 15 or 28 mm scale. Please enlighten me.
Hey Kevin, this scale is very new to me but, from what I've learned or been told, 1:72, 1:76 and 20mm are all largely compatible. I believe that 1:72 may be slightly larger than 20mm but not by much. The Plastic Soldier Company vehicles are labelled as 1:72 but don't look out of place next to the 20mm AB Miniatures figures. I'm probably confusing myself now 😅👍
Ooo tough question! I would say both have their merits and are enjoyable to paint in their own right. It's funny you should mention Epic scale as I'm currently experimenting with speed painting some Epic Pike and Shotte 😃👍
With my normal scale of 28mm, I always try and drill out barrels and muzzles where I can as it certainly accentuates the overall aesthetic presentation, lending itself to a more realistic and accurate mien in line with the rest of the project. As I'd never worked at a 20mm scale before, I decided a more prudent and pragmatic approach would be to keep the aesthetic to more representation and abstraction rather than strictly accurate. I may attempt to drill out the barrels in any future updates to this project though. Thanks 😃
If you go with Chain of Command (which would be a great choice) then you should buy the two "Pint Sized Campaigns" for the British in Normandy - Operation Martlet and The Scottish Corridor. Each campaign book (£5.50 for the PDF) gives you an excellent little history of the operation, and a small ladder campaign - but most importantly each give you a list of troops you need to play - a standard British platoon from June 44 and the appropriate support options (versus a weakened German platoon plus supports - if you like those British try painting the Germans in zeltbahn). This gives you a list of things to paint towards - there's quite a lot of vehicles if you get everything, which makes you appreciate that the PSC 20mm kits give significant savings over 28mm kits. If you want an "introductory" pint sized campaign I'd suggest "29 Let's Go" which features the Americans in Normandy attempting to link their beaches together - the figure and vehicle count is rather less intimidating (and frankly the Yanks paint super fast compared to the Brits and Germans).
That's some great advice, thank you! Chain of Command is a game that I've been telling myself that I'd start playing but for one reason or another, have not. I've watched countless Chain of Command battle reports etc so I'm quite familiar with it, just never got round to playing so I'll be sure to keep this information in mind going forward 😃👍
Absolutely agree with this Steve! I'm always a bit hesitant until I see the miniatures in front of me, but with these, I was certainly not disappointed. Wonderful sculpts 😃👍
Cheers buddy and dfinitely agree with this! I remember having masses and masses of 8th Army figures at this scale when I was a kid. Its true what a lot of people say, they definitely work at this scale and I'm looking forward to painting quite a few more 😃👍
Love to see that you’re painting 20mm! AB are my favourite miniature range by far. I own Napoleonic’s, world war 2 and ACW in Barton’s ranges. Can’t wait to see more of your work with these miniatures 👍
I was very impressed with the quality of the AB Miniatures. Lots of people had recommended them but actually painting them made me really appreciate just how good they are. I'm planning a lot more 20mm content moving forward 😃👍
@@OnPointHQ That’s awesome. I live over in Australia now and close to Melbourne so I’m able to go down to the shop and pick out the miniatures I want. Nic who runs Eureka games is a great bloke as well and the customer service is fantastic! Look forward to your content!
Thank you, much appreciated! This was my first time painting 20mm infantry and was absolutely blown away by the detail on these AB Miniatures, really excellent sculpts. I'll be putting in another order soon so hope to have update video up on the channel. Good luck with your painting 😃👍
That sounds like a lot of different periods to do 20mm in! Having started I can certainly see why as the scale has lots of diversity, can be used for many rules and is just a lot of fun to paint too 😃👍
The 20mm community needed this video. It’s a great scale that the industry is moving further away from. 3D printing has really made a way for 20mm to get some much needed attention. Keep the 20mm stuff coming and I’ll do the same on my channel 😁
Thank you and apologies for the delay in responding to you. It's a scale that I've been aware of for a while but never really looked at in more detail. I was absolutely blown away by the sheer range and availability of units, vehicles and tanks. And like you say, 3d printing has definitely added an extra dimension to 20mm. I'll be picking up this project again soon and hope to get more videos up on the channel about it. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, always appreciated 😃👍
Thank you, really glad that you enjoyed the video! I'm going to be working on my 20mm project again soon so hopefully will have a few more videos about it on the channel 😃👍
I definitely agree with you about AB, absolutely brilliant miniatures, great sculpts and full of character. Enjoyed every minute of painting these and looking forward to working on some more of them soon 😃👍
I loved the small grammar lesson at the beginning. lol. These look fantastic. I'd love to make try my hand at it (Foundry has some awesome, awesome, awesome 20mm stuff), but my eyes are on their way out sadly - I might be doing WW2 in 1/35 because of it. Love the Jerry MMG team!
Cheers James! I think it was appropriate ton remind people of my abject willpower when it comes to the hobby. It's a scale that really does seem to grab people and I'm certainly seeing why. Awesome! I'd love to see somw1/35 on your channel 😃👍
Cheers buddy, much appreciated! This is definitely something that I've thought about. Although I really don't think I could do anything to the AB Miniatures, they're good enough already 😃👍
@@OnPointHQ I understand but you like to have your own ones nobody has anywhere, isn`t it? Come on, let`s get the conversion party startin`! 🥳😂😘♥ Just a little bit. A small project. A tiny one. Come on... 🤣
Great stuff Steve, I do love 20mm wargaming, lots of kit available, some fabulous Sculpter’s out there for ww2 that is for sure. My ww2 collection must be over 3000 figs and kits. Enjoy your adventure and don’t go too crazy😊 Cheers Matt
Thanks Matt, much appreciated! I can certainly see why people end up with such vast collections of 20mm miniatures, they definitely seem to be the sweet spot in both detail and painting time. I think I'm really going to enjoy this adventure 😃👍
...As for basing tanks: If you base your infantry, not basing your tanks is like weird and sh*t. I understand Ste, I understand, once one puts everything on a plinth, then plinth on my prince, nobody likes incongruity. :D Especially those that like to collect tiny effigies of people and make them hit each other with dice.
Lovely stuff Ste. I think we've all had a failure with willpower. The figures look great and those vehicles are great, the Stug mounted on the circular base looks the business!
Thanks mate, much appreciated! I definitely think it's the life of the wargamer to have our willpower constantly tested. I'm really impressed with the oval bases, I was a little hesitant about how they would turn out but really liking the effect 😃👍
Great video Ste. Really pleased you’ve gone for it, it’s a rabbit hole worth disappearing down. Looking forward to seeing more. Liked the start made me 🤭 All the best Andy.
Cheers Andy, much appreciated! I'll be honest, I was aware of the scale but I wasn't aware of the sheer amount of things available. It is most definitely a rabbit hole of immense proportions! 😃👍
Remember saying I'd never get into historical gaming. Now have shelves of books covering most periods and piles of figures that I really need to make a start on.
As far as the hobby goes, I don't think I'll ever say 'I'm never going to....' ever again! But I think that in itself is one part of the hobby that I like, that if I'm interested in something then chances are I'm going to be able to find a rulebook and miniatures for it 😃👍
Have been refreshing my old WW1 20mm over past 12 months plus new stuff. Then moved onto a lot of unopened WW2 stuff. Great to get back to the roots acquired 40 years ago. Yep, got my daughters old make up brushes. Great tool on vehicles indeed!! 1 hour wargame rules is perfect with 20mm.
I have found that it's a really interesting scale to work at and I will certainly be adding more to it over the following months. The makeup brushes have been an absolute revelation and are ideal for weathering and highlighting vehicles 😃👍
@@OnPointHQ I tried to mention that I actually picked up some British “Tommies” which are the identical moulds and sculptures to the AB Miniatures. It was online and they were cheap. Every time I tried to save the comment it failed. Not sure if youtube has the AI to prevent the naming of certain online sources, so I won’t tempt fate again. Anyway, the Tommies came up a treat. I can post photos if required on another platform if people want to see them.
I can definitely appreciate this! I think it's about finding a scale that you're comfortable with. Most of my painting has been 28mm and so painting anything smaller has always meant a slight change in technique. I draw the line at 2mm though 😁
