Glad you liked this one. I’ve read it several times. I think it is worlds better than “The Secret History,” which I did think well-written, but Possession has so much more nuance and tells so many more stories-as well as having at least ~some~ likable characters. Acquisitive American academic institution in Texas buying up English writers’ archives was just so recognizable, too!
The book is a pisstake, a satire on certian forms of literary academia - prurient biographical and feminist special pleading, both of which are devoted to a terrible 19th century writer Randolph Henry Ash. Byatt was a lectuer in literature but I think her point is don't waste your time on rotten authors and digging up the past for prestige. She's David Lodge with a larger vocabluary and wider targets.
The secret history is my favourite book of all time! And I’m always looking for a book that inspires me similarly. Now I’m curious, it sounds very interesting. I will try it 😊, knowing that Donna will remain the greatest for me 😉. Thank you for this video and greetings from Germany 👋 (Ich überlege grade, ob du nicht sogar auch in Deutschland wohnst😅🤔. Ich meine das hätte ich mal in einem Video gehört)
This is one of my favorite novels, ever. I too had a wee Google search and then felt like a dope. There are very few contemporary novels that I loved as much as this one. Great review.
