It's a bit of javascript I threw together to do the mapping. It's supposed to let you do a moody decomposition as well, but I haven't got around to that, and the graphic representation is pants. If you're interested, I'll clean it up and drop it up on github

Well, you've got to mark it up with something. In my case, pencil. What's your reasoning for being against using a marker, though?

@@wibblywobblyidiotvision well the marker has a tiny thickness that can affect the reading

@@alexmay3533 But that goes for everything you could use to mark the surface. A pencil line is around 2µ, ISTR that Tom Lipton did some tests on markers and got somewhat similar results. My take would be that, short of a projected laser grid or what-have-you, it's unlikely to make a significant difference to my readings. Sure, my "bridges" are crossing over the lines, but theres one at each end so it should average out, the bridges themselves are probably at least that inaccurate, and later measurements have been made on a specially-made 3 point support that doesn't even touch the lines. Plus, I'm running up against the noise floor of my measuring equipment anyway. I literally can't measure any more accurately until I manage to get my hands on a more sensitive level. Mind you, I could probably fill the "holes" with sharpie ink :) Interesting point, though, thanks for raising it.

Well all in all you can easily use a ruler to hold the exact place of the level.
