In this video, I describe a project where I worked to add an exhaust fan to my home's basement workshop, the better to remove volatile fumes when lacquer painting during certain projects. I think my steps all worked out well, but the selected exhaust fan turned out to be capable of moving a lot more air than I had in mind......

I hope you will video several of the instrument cases you do to show us the different instrument needs, mouthpiece, reed, or other boxes, types of cushioning the customer may request, etc. This isn't something you can see just anyplace.

Swimcoach, while I appreciate your comment, it is bad email etiquette to leave comments for one subject in the comment section of an unrelated video. Having said that, I have already made several detailed instrument case build videos, and don't plan to make any more on that subject.

Curious why you went with a 20”. There are plenty of industrial 8,10 or 12” fans that move tons of air. But your solution is a pretty good solution too.

HabitualButtonPusher, I saw some online reviews on this model fan, who seemed to using theirs in similar sized areas. I also talked to the manufacturer's tech support, who thought this was a good choice. I now think it is considerably oversized, but still usable. But by using an adapter panel, I can still place a smaller fan in my home-built door insert panel; that might still happen. I might also just buy a cheap 20" box fan, then take it out of its box and rig it to fit in my door panel cutout, and see if that moves enough air (for situations where I need to keep the furnace running while still exhausting a bit).

You should think about getting into 3D printing so you can make those star nuts yourself.

I "am" into 3D printing, but time is money and I did not want to spend the time designing and debugging the design over several test prints, when I could spend half the dollar amount I value my time with and just get ready made ones.

@user-gv4ge7ug4h , I don't advertise any of my trips, activities or projects in advance. They are nobody else's business until I do them and then decide to post a video about them.

Hello, I’ve been watching your videos for quite some time, including many of your train videos, which were quite enjoyable… Unfortunately, it’s been a month since you’ve posted this video apparently. I wish I had seen it earlier however, at one point I had a little shop in my basement with a lathe with a milling machine a steel table. My stuff was primarily steel, but some wood however what I did was I got an industrial bathroom fan, which typically fits up between two joists and Iran four-inch ducting around various appliances, I also installed quite simply a circular 4 inch diameter diffuser, where the inner 3 inch circle was connected to a threaded bolt, and therefore it was able to be turned and brought out which would encourage ventilation at that point or if I was at another station if I can say I would close all of these which I mean takes all of 30 seconds and open just the one where I was working for example, doing staining of wood and it was quite effective. There were never any complaints in the remainder of the house, as I certainly was conscious of this! But it was very effective. It took me all of maybe three hours to install aside from drilling the holes through the exterior brick wall to enable a 4 inch diameter termination kit. It wasn’t expensive, and it was quite functional.

David Burnell, thanks for your comments. I sounds like your shop had a simpler layout/arrangement than mine; without all the complicating factors of mine, I might have been able to do something else. Also, my home is open-plan, so as far as the air is concerned, it is just one big open space. Vapors from anything in the shop are very apparent elsewhere in the house. With ventilation, a lot depends on volume of air that needs to be removed to avoid health and safety issues. I had already investigated the GPM of things like bathroom fans, and concluded that by the time such a fan had time to exhaust the space near my painting area, the noxious vapors would already have had time to migrate elsewhere in the house. As far as complaints elsewhere in the house, a lot depends on perception. I could spray aerosol enamels all day and never SMELL anything elsewhere, but that is related to the type of odor and whether my nose would be able to detect it. I set up this exhaust scheme specifically because of my need to do some lacquer spray painting, and the noxious vapors from that are both much nastier, more noticeable, more health hazardous and more combustible. My only regret about my scheme is NOT doing the GPM calculations for the fan that Amazon happened to sell, as it is somewhat oversized. But as I said in the video, I still have the option of fitting a somewhat smaller fan into my faux-door.
