The first piece of advice, from Professor Michael Rathjen, is really the most important one. In Japanese martial arts we say you should invest at least 3 years to find your sensei; it’s not the same thing but still... The PhD is an apprenticeship in research and you are going to be this person’s apprentice for a number of years. You need to find a competent scholar, you need to admire and trust this person, but it must also be someone with whom you get along well, and who can bring out your best talents. I always tell my students that finding the right supervisor is one of the most important decisions for the success of their PhD and for their happiness while doing it.

yeah to start. phds are turned out by the 100s in my university. there's an overabundance of them. you have to turn it into something unique now or go social media. learn to sell and bring money for the university. then you easily get tenure and dont do shit to help the community to get paid.

I would suggest "DONT DO IT" in most cases, but if you are a PhD student already, I would suggest : "get in touch with your future employer or find your future employer as soon as possible, never wait". Sorry for my English.

Actually a PhDs in Physics and in other hard sciences are pretty lucrative in the private sector, since you're pretty likely to be given a high ranking research position (like "chief scientist" or something) in companies like raytheon, or similarly for National Laboratories. I mean this really makes sense since in those 6 somewhat years of work you've basically accrued solid "research skills" that a master's graduate would lack.

... not one of them said make sure you know WHY you want to do a PhD and if it is for (a) good reasons (b) going to be something that when you look back on your life you're glad you did. Lastly, there is no point doing a PhD or any doctoral study if you can't afford it! Don't expect to get a high paying job as the result of a doctorate. From the reading I've been doing it seems that most employers will look at your masters degree at the very most and if you have experience in the area. No experience will likely mean you go on the 'weaker candidates' pile.

Im a chemistry undergraduate, & was interested in doing a pHd and was very confused but after many research, reading and asking people here is my advice for fellow students: Phd is good for academia or research, fees are usually covered by the uni. Having phd doesnt translate in higher salary or more job options quite the opposite, it makes you a niche candidate, being so specialized can turn off employers bc they would have to pay u more. It can last up to 8 years in USA Masters , can be very useful in the industry, specially if its multidisciplinary. Disadvantage is you have to pay it yourself. it can last 2-3 years. Depending on programs it can involve doing internships in the industry (experience) which is quite attractive if u went straight from undergrad to grad school

there are a lot of ignorant and ill-informed individuals commenting on this video. 1) A PhD can be self-funded and often is and it makes no difference to the support you gain from the uni; 2) a PhD is an absolute necessary (Derp Scout and other comments) for a variety of high level posts but also unless we have individuals prepared to work at the cutting face of any subject, progress isn't made. I can't believe the ignorance of his comment that it isn't necessary. Research is needed beyond the world of health too but health research has invariably saved our friends and family from awful diseases. 3) doing a PhD is a noble act and not selfish as the knowledge you contribute over thousands of hours of study, will be the stepping stone for other academics or individuals which leads me to the final point, research is available to everyone if you find the right databases and websites. That means even entrepreneurs and SMEs can use this to help inform their growth and direction 4) There is NO place in modern society for ignorant people stigmatising education because it trickles down to the children they have who then devalue education from day one at school. People like Derp Scout cannot value education at a lower level if they don't value education. Full Stop.

Ramdev Jangid Although I am still an undergraduate, but I will tell you one thing : if you can think you can do it. If you thjnk that you can grind your brain and make something useful, then GO FOR IT !! My maternal uncles (4) weren't from some hot shot college, yet even in the most pathetic of living conditions and scanty economic resources were able to complete their PhD and become professor (1) and have research and management related government jobs (3). Same goes for one of my cousin brother who after doing his PhD is working at IBM (IBM Watson probably?). So go for it. Don't listen to those bullshit comments that are here in this video.

I don't have a Ph.D. But I do have a Master's degree which I finished in '10 and has put me in a financial hole, since I did have to take out loans. I got some help, but the stock market crashed in '08 and couldn't find any work during school to supplement my income (which is what I intended to do the whole time I was in school). But, I chose to go to school, so I must face the reprucussions (both personally and financially). Save your money, or wait until tuition costs go down.

You're right. If the university won't pay for your PhD in its entirely with either a TA or GA position, don't attend! They are getting sooooooo much free labor from you, that's the least they can do. If you want it that bad, I guess you could take out loans, but that's a bad sign. This means that the faculty doesn't value your input /research enough to invest in it. And if thats the case, why admit them? Most of these top tier schools receive a billion dollar or more endowment, they've got the money. Trust!

A PhD in basic science makes you have the license to practice science. A University scientist/researcher/academia/professor is just a special extension of Government employees. If the "Government" wants you, you will be hired to start as an assistant professor. Then all these factors will dictate your research and academic career for the remaining of your life: number of publications, citations, impact factor and government research grants.

And let me add this crucial piece of advice: understand the RISKS of seeking a PhD. e.g. Will I be able to get a job afterwards? What kind of job will I have? Will I be able to finish a PhD program? Do I want all the debt that comes along with a PhD. Do NOT just be moved by a quest for knowledge, as if that is all a PhD is about.

Universities are degree mills. It's getting to the point where not having a degree is like not having a girlfriend....what's the matter with you?!?! Everyone has one, two, or more degrees. For some, that's about all they'll ever amount to, getting and grinding out degrees. Used to be that only the truly exceptional/very rich people got invited to study under a professor. Galileo was like that. Nowadays, anybody with a bank loan can sink it into that bottomless well.

Total nonsense when it comes to a Ph.D. in mathematics. No meaningful and original results means no Ph.D. awarded. Its an incredibly difficult subject to get a Ph.D. in. Don't lump mathematical sciences in with wishy washy social sciences type nonsense. Degrees in the quantitative sciences are earned by hard work and determination, not subjective nonsense.

You. Are. Wrong. If you want it enough, you'll do well in your undergrad. Your performance in academia during those years will pave the way for your masters. If you're good enough grade/project experience-wise you'll get your masters paid for by a fellowship or grant of some sort. Based on that performance you'll continue on to doctorate should you wish, and most likely with continued funding. People will hire you if you're good enough at anything. People are always hiring.
@DuskLegend
@DuskLegend 6 лет назад
I like the last parts of your comment, people *are* always hiring. I hear people complain about the job market (in most of the broad, privatized fields) and cringe when they make it seem like it's utterly hopeless. But the first part about undergraduate performance - well who's to say that outside factors don't interfere with people doing their BA/BS or AA/AS? Like, say a student graduates with a 2.5 - you're telling me they're really just not fit for a Master's or PhD? I'm pretty sure unless they're just pulling a Van Wilder and don't want to leave college, that their commitment to an advanced degree is testament enough to their ability.
