I have never professionally printed any of my images before, which, having been a professional photographer for many years now, seems like a ridiculous fact.
To remedy this I decided to take 3 images from my recent shoot with the Himba Tribe, down to Genesis Imaging in London, and get them professionally printed. Mark Foxwell, their creative director, kindly gave me some time to share advice to camera for print virgins like myself.
I hope this video challenges you to get out and print one of your favourites.
Very special thanks to Mark and Gabrielle at Genesis Imaging: genesisimaging.co.uk/

It does the same to me too. Apart from his videos/content being motivating itself, also notice the way story progresses, he handpicks the soundtrack, he color correct each footage according to the mood. He puts the feelings inside his videos, visuals and soundtracks go with same pace. He is very serious about his work, his voice is deep and works into his favor. The whole video is very well planned and every video of him is. It is an Art. Cheers Sean :)

Can't compare a digital file with a print. Too many images are lost to social networks etc. Bringing the image to life makes it all worth while.

The best thing about printing, in my opinion, is that you get to show your work the way you intent it to. You choose the correct paper, the correct color profile, the correct lighting, whereas in digital you are stuck with the monitor of the viewer.
@RealHankShill
@RealHankShill 6 лет назад
Exactly this. I slave for hours on some images getting everything perfect. Most people viewing it online will never see it the way I make it, unless they have a calibrated monitor, which is not a very common thing for most people to have. 98% of monitors are way too bright, so there goes the hours of getting the light just perfect. Most monitors have extreme color casts, most phones have a blue color cast. There goes hours of making sure your colors are perfect. Print, looks the same everywhere, exactly how you intended it to be.

I print many of my own photos and hang them in my home. Periodically, I "rotate" them with new photos. I have found that it gives me an opportunity to critique my own work that is unique and very different from looking at them on a screen. It also pushes me to get out and find more images. Thanks for sharing this video!

I find this quite inspiring in that you didn't pretend that you know stuff, like many RU-vidrs do, even for remotely, but rather you sought out help and delivered a genuine point of view from a working printer who has close to 40 years of experience. I really appreciate that. Recently got into printing myself, not professionally yet but at home using a Canon PIXMA PRO‑100 Color Inkjet Photo Printer, and although it isn't the best printer to produce 'best work' but at the same time, it is what I have, and it definitely is an eye opening experience because I really saw the difference in post processing my landscape images between for screen and for paper. And having my work actually printed on paper made it feel more tangible. I am one of those who truly believes in the idea that you must physically make and create stuff to claim that it is yours. Thanks for the video. Cheers.

This is gold Sean! The experience of seeing the image on paper and living outside of a screen is priceless. It's a different and IMO better experience than anything a screen can deliver. To hold something tangible, to have it live in your space, whether it's a print or a book or any art-creates a relationship mentally and emotionally with the item that just doesn't happen on screen. Again IMO, this will only become more increasingly valuable as the world becomes more digital. There will always be people who collect physical books because the experience is one that a digital device can never provide.

Amazing and so true, most of my photos live in the digital world and have never been printed, and I feel that when printing the work you do, is like giving it a greater appreciation to that photo even if you are the only one who see it everyday and that's ok. Thank you so much for creating eye opening videos with a complete different perspective and keeping true to yourself.

Getting photos in print just gives them this extra quality. And it has to do with committing to that image. Not always easy, but I feel like once it's done, you feel relieved, free even. It materialises all the work that's been put in. And when you put in the work to get the shot, why skimp on the last part by not taking it in to a professional lab. Great video, and of course, those portraits are amazing!

I'm old. I pre-date digital. By a lot. I had a darkroom in the early 1970s. My photographs are not done until they are printed. I call it art and I call myself an artist even though I don't make a dime on my art. Once on the wall, this is my history. It is my life, hung for me and those close to me to see, enjoy, re-live and critique as I progress. Pixels on Instagram are fleeting. On to the next picture for a three-second view and a like and then on to the next. So many likes but we crave even more. Not to mention that very few monitors are calibrated, so digital art isn't true to the photographer's intent. But on the wall -- that one image can have hundreds or thousands of hours of viewing and enjoyment. Digital is wonderful and there is less to pack and move when you buy a new house. But for me, digital is complete only when it is printed. Thanks for this video.

New subscriber - just discovered you this morning on the Introvert videos. As a former photographer during the film days, a mistake I made was not seeing enough of my work - film and printing were expensive. Coming back almost 30yrs later I am committed to seeing my work. Bought a 13" printer (can't afford larger!) and am printing and framing prints. As an introvert I know the perfectionist side of things, but have grown to be able to accept my work as something which is a reflection of who I am. I am not perfect (and never will be), and neither will my work ever be perfect. But I can enjoy the good now and let go of the bad.

I do a lot of printing for books. For "direct to plate" printers (since physical films are not in use anymore). The best advice I received long ago from a guy who began his career as a "scanner" for prints and transparencies is "lighten the mid-tones". I used his advice everyday since then with excellent results. Mid-tones have a tendency to clog when ink is involved. Even if your image sounds good on your screen, you have to make a "leap of faith". Lightening the mid-tones will add detail in that range and make your print more "readable".

COOOOOLLLL!! Some reactions from me whenever I watch ANY of your videos... "Oh wow, I'm glad I'm not the only one!" "Whoa it really is that simple. I definitely over complicate things (and rely on gear)." Also, your videos have the craziest Like / Dislike ratio. So many likes and very little dislikes. That says a lot about the genuine message behind you and your work. And yes, while you definitely aren't pretentious enough to call your work art - we, your viewers can call your work art and I may even go as far as saying your APPROACH to your craft, is in itself, art! Seriously, tons of thanks for all of it!

Great video, once again. You are very good at these. Printing, for me, completes the cycle with photography. I don't print all that much, as I only print the images that I really like. However, I find that I look at, study even, images in a different way when they are printed and hung up than when they are on a screen.

I’ve just purchased a printer and have been immersing myself in RU-vid videos on the subject of printing my photographs and enjoyed your video very much, and yet couldn’t help feeling a bit saddened by your introduction. It’s probably just the fact that I am from a very different generation, but I have always considered that the things you own and surround yourself with are the very things that define who you are, so I really struggle with the concept of the so-called digital age. I can’t imagine not being able to visit a second hand bookshop and a actually holding real books in my hands or sitting in my living room surrounded by a lifetimes music collection with each album having the ability to remind me of times past and of course the photographs that help recall 60 years plus worth of memories - without these things I’m just sitting in an empty box, with these things I’m sitting in my home. Ha Ha, what an old fart I’ve become..........

Another thoughtful and provocative piece. One thought though: each print is an opportunity to revisit the original vision and reinterpret it. Think of the old hand printing process: one can never dodge and burn etc in exactly the same way. Each print can and should be subtly (and, perhaps, not so subtly) different from the one that went before

I have searched youtube what precaution you should take before printing photo or should you be afraid to print your photos?....well, this is what i was looking for, and it is a kind of relief when you said that printing of your photos is a very forgiving part as compare to viewing it on your monitor screen and being critical about it.....love the prints you have got (y)

Amazing work. I agree with all what you say, like you said I have been a digital person and lived in small apartments, but when I first printed some of my images and framed them (and I have them since) they took a different vibe, although I dont feel standing proud with them I actually learned more looking at them printed.

There is something about producing an artifact that goes beyond just taking a great digital image. It solidifies the effort into a final form. Also, it may not be about how great the shot is but how great the person in the shot is and what the image means to us.

So, you really hit home with the commitment issue. We have a lot in common based on the thoughts you've expressed across your channel. Really appreciating the thoughtful content. Recently I printed 3 of my own photos and they came out much darker in the tangible world than on my computer screen. That was a surprise to me. So printing is important to know how your work translates into a tactile medium. It's very satisfying. In regards to committing to a photo I thought of this... why not swap your photos out quarterly and give them to your friends, offer old ones up for coffee venues or art exhibits? or just add them to a clip book which will grow over time. Cheers Sean!
