Aerating & De-Compacting Soil Around an Oak Tree

In this video, the soil surrounding the oak tree was badly compacted. When compaction occurs above the key structural roots of a tree, it diminishes the available soil pores (air spaces) that hold oxygen. This limits the oxygen diffusion rate in the soil and results in root suffocation. But a tree's roots must have oxygen in order to grow. As such, compaction can severely harm a tree. Aerating and de-compacting the soil in the critical root zone will fix the problem. As you will see in this video, we do so using an Air Spade. This tool blasts out air at over 1200 MPH. This is powerful enough to break up the soil, but does not harm the roots. Once the aeration is done, we cover the area with mulch. The mulch helps trap moisture, regulate temperature, and keep weeds and grass from growing.

Can I do this with a pressure washer? I have small fruit trees in my backyard. Is there a better time of the year to do this? THanks!!

10" of aeration is deep enough to make a difference. Most tree roots are found in the upper 24” of soil and the majority of thin, water absorbing roots are located in the top 6” of soil. Obviously deeper would be better, but it is important to optimally match cost vs benefit for the client - and the 10" mark is a good balance of both. As for palm trees, I know very little since we do not have palms here. I do know that having to air spade down 4 feet deep would be difficult, if not impossible.

A sand blaster is actually a different kind of tool. It shoots out finely ground silica at a very high speed in order clean and abrade surfaces. The Air Spade simply uses air loosen and stir the compacted soil (mostly red clay in this area).

Fellow arborist here. I have a few questions if you don't mind. Now that it has been years, have you observed any noticeable changes? Why did you opt not to verticle mulch? Lastly, how much did this job cost? To make this beneficial for potential clients of yours I'll point out that you have to rent a heavy duty construction air compressor, those air spades are like $2-3,000 dollars, and this take a lot of time for plant health care work. These programs need to pull in a lot of revenue for as short amount of time as possible- I know that sounds like something that is true for everyone, but it's different. The chemicals, injection equipment, tanks, fertilizers, nutrients, hormones, and antibiotics to name a few all need to be in inventory and they're very very expensive and have to be bought in quantity. Then you need a federal restricted use license for the business and for the employee using them (or supervising) and you typically need a certified arborist. All those licenses require continue education credits which are very expensive bc they usually involve hotels and tickets, and driving long distances. If I were to do this, I'd quote it at 1600-2600 depending on several behind the seens factors that have to be organized (how far away is the client from the rental place and how far is that from the office, how much the rental is, and how much time the prep and breakdown is including the time to return the rental and stuff. You can't just go to another clients house after that covered in dirt. You probably gotta shower and def have to change. So how did the tree do? How much did you charge? Why wasn't a verticle mulch necessary here?

Vertical mulching is good, but only has a fraction of the benefit of a full aeration and decompaction. It is definitely better than nothing. You are correct regarding equipment and regulations. This is an expensive endeavors that requires years of training, research, and expertise to be done correctly (many companies offers these services and perform the incorrectly). I think your pricing is a bit high, but then again every company has their own pricing structure based on set costs, variable costs, profit margins, etc. That is something you will have to figure out for your company. The tree is doing amazingly well. We have seen tremendous benefits from these services, especially for trees in tough urban environments.

Yes, it can. Though the more compacted and dense the soil (clay being very dense, of course), the longer it takes.
@j0phus
@j0phus 6 лет назад
It's the worst when it's remediation for new construction damage where they've scraped all the top soil off, driving all that heavy machinary over the clay that just bakes in the sun. You fire up the air spade and it's just a 70 foot cloud of sandstorm that you can't see through and you start sweating in your goggles or mask... Nothing better in the world to do!

can this tool be used to decompact very heavy clay soil?
@moniquemonicat

Here in Arizona we add a little GYPSUM which quickly interacts with clay soil. Not many people know about using gypsum, I just found out myself from QC Tropicals in Queen Creek Arizona. Really helps soften hard as rock clay soil that we have in the desert so hard you cannot get a shovel in. IN fact our soil is so hard we can use it as cement to hold in our pavers! After soaking and drenching the area for the hole in water and gypsum overnight, the hole is easy to dig with the shovel! Any gypsum will do. Can u paint the roots
@Leaflimb
@Leaflimb 10 лет назад
I'm not sure I understand the context of this question... Is the root exposed already, or underground? If underground, leave it alone. If exposed, I suppose that you could decorate it with a non-toxic paint. If your question is in regards to healing or protecting a wound to an exposed tree root, the research shows that painting over a wound does not protect the tree. It has been suggested that it may even harm the tree. Does this help?

Leaf & Limb thanks for the reply. Would be great to see some follow up footage or pics to show the benefits were lasting. My initial question came because my understand is even if compacted, the soil contains beneficial bacteria and the like which could’ve died once disturbed and also could’ve allowed new disease to penetrate. Glad to hear it’s responding well.
@Leaflimb
@Leaflimb 5 лет назад
@@kbkesq You are right about the soil - it does have many beneficial organisms that can be damaged by this process (esp fungal hyphae). But in this case, the soil was so compacted that populations of fungi, bacteria, and other beneficial organisms were low as compared to healthy soil. Thus the benefits of this process, which created a healthy new habitat for these organisms, outweighed the cons of damaging the existing organisms. It's similar to tree pruning - we are creating a wound, but the benefits outweigh the damage caused in the long run (or at least they should when done properly).

@@kbkesq The healthy microbiome you're trying to create for trees requires oxygenated soil. That does not exist in heavily compacted dirt.

@shit2fly
@shit2fly 3 года назад
@@Leaflimb Which is why i'm wondering why you're focusing around the trunk. A tree of that size surely can't have a dripline next to the trunk. I mean, a 20 inch breastheight diameter tree has a critical root zone of at least 30 foot radius.
@Leaflimb
@Leaflimb 3 года назад
@@shit2fly The area near the trunk has the highest density of roots, so we start there. We would love to go to the dripline but often this makes the project unaffordable. So we usually compromise by going out 10-15 feet on a large tree like this. This strikes a good balance between budget and being a great benefit to the tree
@shit2fly
@shit2fly 3 года назад
@@Leaflimb Ok I understand that, i guess it's not ideal but better than nothing.
@Leaflimb
@Leaflimb 3 года назад
@@shit2fly Even just this amount will have a huge positive impact on the tree. More is better of course. And you can always make a larger wood chip bed. It takes much, much longer but over time wood chips + leaving the leaves in place each year will have a similar effect to this process

Why would oak trees need this as they never got it before modern times and Oaks live forever and forever?

Because those trees lived in an undisturbed natural setting, behind an apartment complex where bulldozers stripped the topsoil away and compacted the clay.
