The 7th century Gooty Fort, also known as Ravadurg, is a ruined fort located on a hill in the Gooty town Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, India. The word Gooty (locally pronounced "Gutti") is derived from the town's original name, Gowthampuri. This centrally protected monument of national importance has several ruined buildings within the fort, including granaries, store rooms and magazines. Some of these were used as prisons by the East India Company (wikipedia).
The Gooty Fort is visible from Hyderabad - Bangalore National Highway 7.
Around 300 meters above the sea level, adjacent to Gooty town, Gooty Fort has been an important strategic regional capital for the Chalukyas, Mughals, Marathas, East India Company and the Vijayanagara Empire before the Qutb Shahi dynasty take over.
Named after the Gooty town, Gooty is derived from the town's original name, Gowthampuri.
Gooty Fort is one of the oldest hill forts in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
One has to trek to the top of the hill to reach Gooty Fort, where the place is filled with historic ruins and tranquil vistas.
It is mentioned as the 'King of Forts' on historical inscriptions found here.
