Those adjusters came out nice. In my experience with Honda cush drives of the type you used, the cast iron bearing surfaces can wear and allow sprocket to tilt slightly. It isn't a major problem but does cause extra friction you don't want on a race bike. When in good condition they work fine. I have made thin wall steel rings/tube to shrink onto hub to close up any clearance then bored sprocket carrier for 0.001"0.0015" clearance. Before I had a mill and rotary table, to drill hubs I made a brass extension for 1/16" drill and used opposite spoke holes as a guide. With 1/16" hole drilled through it gave place to drill lightening holes and going through the fins on brake drum looked like works parts (even though they were aluminium and not magnesium castings) Nice to see card being used to prevent damage in chuck, been doing it since mid 70's when it was first taught to me.

@steveyoung5520
@steveyoung5520 3 года назад
Hey Paul, I'm also using an XL-350 hub (the whole wheel actually) on my Sprint flat-tracker project, and I took some pretty judicious measurements of everything. What I found was that when you line up the engine, hub, and swingarm centerlines, the driven (wheel) sprocket is offset outboard by .306" (roughly; as close as I could measure) from the drive sprocket. The XL-350 hub does indeed interfere with the swingarm by around 120 thou when the centerlines are aligned, so that needs to be cut down as you did, but you also need to cut the sprocket mounting surface down by about 300 thou to get the sprockets to line up with everything else in line. It's easier to see on a drawing, but I can't post that here so I'll send a pdf to your email.
@paulbrodie
@paulbrodie 3 года назад
If you move the countershaft sprocket inboard the chain will foul on the upper rear engine mount. In a perfect world your sprockets would be aligned to a few thou, but in the real world they can stand to be very slightly out and no one will know..
@steveyoung5520
@steveyoung5520 3 года назад
But it's not the countershaft sprocket that needs to move inboard (toward the centerline); it's the wheel sprocket. I could live with them being slightly misaligned, but I think 300 thou is a bit excessive. By the way, it may seem like I'm being a contrarian, but there are very few people out there with Aermacchi projects, and I am delighted to have someone to bounce things off of. Keep it coming!
@paulbrodie
@paulbrodie 3 года назад

My old boss (an aircraft engineer) told me if you press a slightly oversized ball bearing through a hole drilled in aluminium, it can make it as strong or stronger than before it was drilled. I guess this depends on how much material surrounds it etc., but I'd love to know if it's actually true. I have a feeling that at the very least, it could remove any stress risers and reduce the chances of cracking.

For the spacer, does it contact the inner and outer part of the bearing? I have been trying to figure this out and thought if it only contacts the inner part of the bearing, the outer is free to move on the bearing alone without interference, necessitating a slight chamfer on the face - or, am I nuts? Probably nuts. Thanks as always - everything you're doing on this and the Cub is helping me immeasurably!
@paulbrodie

The axle spacers only contact the inner bearing race(s). When you torque the axle nut that whole assembly becomes solid. The outer races are a press fit in the hub, but each should also butt up against a "shoulder", basically the same height as the outer race. Make sense?

@@paulbrodie 100% agree, plus we tune in for you too! I am now a mountain biker who is watching motorcycle stuff, and learning more about a subject I wasn’t that familiar with.

I wouldn't want to part off a piece of metal on the lathe either... In my head it wouldn't cut even and would cause it to become unbalanced then it would fly off and knock my teeth out. LoL

Parting off in the lathe works great sometimes, and then it can bite; just like that!

@@paulbrodie - I've seen machining fails on RU-vid and I wish I never did because if I ever get to work w/ a lathe it will be in the back of my mind the whole time... Like when you're filing a piece in the running lathe, I'm sh¡tting myself every time I hear the file skip off the lathe jaws. 😂😅😩

Cutting oil, not to be confused with lubricating oil.

Hi Paul, you can replace that big snap ring with a spiral lock retainer. They are much easier to deal with and might save a gram or two. www.smalley.com/retaining-rings/spirolox

I've come across many bike restoration channels where they say nothing at all. They bore me, and I never return. I want to hear the reasoning behind the decisions. So witter at will, Paul. If people don't like it other channels are available. They're just not as good...

Thanks Bill. I too have very little patience with channels that don't speak. It really seems like a wasted opportunity. Or, I have seen a channel where he was talking, but the camera focussed on an empty workbench for a very long time... Believe me, I can rant about this!

Viewers who don’t like to have people talking in their project videos are the viewers who prefer picture books over novels. Hence being compelled to say so.
