AEROBATICS in Gliders. I had the opportunity to visit The Gliding Centre at Husbands Bosworth airfield. Rob Barsby ( AEROSPARX ) hosted me and introduced to 2 students, one pre solo Ali, an Susan who had just started to learn to glide.
It was so enthralling to learning how they became interested in gliding and being able to watch their flights and reactions.
I had two surprises at the end of the day, Rob let me fly and land the club glider, which after having not flown one since 2014, I even surprised myself how quickly it all came back, even managing to roll it back to the launch point. The second surprise was the opportunity to fly with Guy Westgate and Rob Barsby in the the Aerosparx motorgliders, not only in formation but doing aerobatics and smoke.
It was truly an epic day.

First time I've ever seen a Grobe loop, let alone two in formation ! What a great day !! Soaring is the art of reading the invisible air to maximize performance. Love it !!

Hi Giles. Had to be a real treat, I'm sure. I never done a winch launch before (except my R/C gliders). Must be a thrill compare to aero tow ? Wife and I caught COVID 3 weeks ago. Feeling better now. I work in a hospital, so most likely contracted it there. Will try to get back to the gold fields this coming weekend. 🤠⛏⚒👍

Hi Kevin, it was one of those videos that could be an hour long, but no one would watch it. The ladies were such good sports and the surprise at the end of the day was a real treat.

@@GolfFoxtrot22 it certainly looked fun! Braver than me, I'd not be in my 'happy place' that close to another aircraft, but they must be very experienced at that game - and when he mentioned Dubai I confess my first thought was on the logistics of getting the planes there more than anything else!

Wow, Mr Vella is back in the house. I think you should find a gliding centre and have a go, that would be an epic vlog from your side of the pond. It was great to get back in a glider after so long. Meeting the students and being able to interview them was a real privilege. The aerobatics at the end was just AWESOME.

Somehow I missed this from my stream, great video Giles somehow gliding video always looks so cool. This has to be one of the most professionally produced and epically shot videos in your archive Giles it needs way more views, hopefully it will pick them up over time. HI Sara, there is a secret electric project coming out of Flylight, so stay tuned. I've tried paramotor trikes before, I'm just not a fan. I'm. Not sure if you've seen my previous video but I don't own a paramotor atm.

@@GolfFoxtrot22 no Giles have a voucher for fixed wing my son's got me haven't been yet because of covid restrictions they got it bye mistake as I would like to do flex wing .,I would like very much to own and fly a P Bee we live in hope ☺

Allie had a proper glider pilots hat. Yes my subjects of, math, physics and engineering all have helped my flying. I have not flown a glider for years but like many ATC cadets I started with gliding and then went on to power (for FREE), well with a fair bit of effort.

It's a shame all the motor gliders have all gone now. Getting flying slots for Air Cadets is really difficult now and a lot of the VGS and AEFs have been disbanded. Sad times.

@@GolfFoxtrot22 It is a shame that the ATC is not supported the way it was. I never got to fly in a motor glider in the ATC the Venture just came in and I was too big. When I got a flight in a Grob 109 (when based at Kinloss) they would not shutdown the engine, as it was not in the operational allowed parameters (well you could have wiped the floor with me, a motor glider not allowed to glide).

Great video Giles, my first flights were with the ATC in the Viking Glider, culminating in me going solo aged 17. I didn't step foot in a GA aircraft again until two years ago, when i started my PPL training. I truly believe the "core skills" learnt early on, in the "purest form of flight" are what enabled me to gain my PPL in 45hrs. After gliding, flying with an engine feels a bit like cheating !!!........ It was great to see you flying without a helmet on for a change, that grin on your face was priceless. keep up the good work.

Hi Chris, it's amazing how refreshing it is to fly without an engine, using only thermals to stay up. Like yourself my civvi gliding gave me a really solid foundation for my PPL. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video, I still have the silly grin.

@@GolfFoxtrot22 I flew to the LAA rally on Friday and met the amazing Ben Ashman .... he really is a lovely man, happy to talk aircraft, without pushing a sales pitch .... yet I still nearly walked away with a pee bea 🤣

@@GolfFoxtrot22 I did, and it felt good. Although being a fat lump I would have to go for the 180 engine 🤣 I think my father and I will head down to Stoke in Kent next spring and have a few lessons on flex wings, before we make our mind up. I was also very impressed the Skyranger Ninja

Just got around to watching this one. Gliders fascinate me but I like the comfort blanket of having an engine. The look on your face when you started to pull into that loop is a picture. Great vid Giles.

Fantastic! Great video! I was cheering with you when you nailed that landing. What is the Vne on those gliders? I love the sound they make as they fly over me. Giles, did you get a chance to introduce Aly and Susan to Paragliding or Hang Gliding? I am sure both would like the wide open view. PS. My son is waiting for a calm day at SkySchool to take his first solo. I guess it has been too windy there.

Hi Chris, wow I bet your son is excited. Its been windy for a while actually. It was gusting 20mph on this day but gliders like a bit of wind. I was happy with the landing having not flown stick and rudder for a bit, it came back really quickly. I've just looked up the Vne, 151 kts or 280 kph, pretty awesome to be honest. I think Ali and Susan were more focused on conventional fixed wing aircraft but it was so good to have an insight into their flying.

Great vid mate I want to have a lesson in a flex wing and then a glider can I ask when doing glider lessons is it with a engine or towed thanks also is it a self cert medical for gliding licence Also what aircraft is in the second part of the video and what is the smoke coming out of it thanks

Hi Deon, you can get towed up behind another aircraft ( Aerotow) and released at height 2000ft etc, or a winch launch which can get you to 1500 ft and then you can thermal up from there. There is a cost difference but I used to mainly use the Aerotow as it gave me more time. Its a self cert medical. I hope that helps.

@@deonogorman928 the last aircraft is a Grob109 and is a motorglider so you basically need a Private Pilots Licence with Motorglider rating. That is a full medical.
