To protect the pump, there should be a filter in the slot in front of the pump. You can make your own with a washing scrub pads from the dollar store, just cut it to size. It's basically the rough side minus the sponge part of a scotch scrub pad.
Awesome video series Rob! I think a water and white vinegar solution would get rid of the white residue from mineral buildup. It works for buildup on all sorts of things around the house. Thanks for making these videos.
Great video Rob. I too love my aerogardens for seed starting. At times I am a meticulous nerd and the best way I found to really clean the grow deck is to use my dremel with a buffing attachment or sponge attachment and buff the white residue away. a good electric toothbrush with vinegar has also proved to be effective. Thanks for the great video.
I grow culinary herbs year-round with my Harvest Elite but, I had spectacular success using it to start my tomatoes this last January. I couldn't believe how much healthier and heartier they were compared to those started in soil. Now, if I can figure out how to keep the *^%$ caterpillars off of them in the spring, I'll be all set. Your channel is extremely informative, especially this video. Few people go though the trouble of explaining the end-of-growth cleaning process. Thank you very much for your efforts!
Great video Rob! Love your hydroponic vids. I just finished the germination cycle on 4 Green jalapenos and 2 purple in my older model aerogarden. These little hydroponic systems are so cool! Heres hoping I have some luck with my new little pepper plants. Also, I love the musical transitions. Every time i tend to my plants I hum "My roots are in the water but Im reachin for the sky" Just the bees knees man.
You inspired my wife and I to get an AeroGarden as a joint gift from her parents who didn’t know what to get us. It’s been phenomenal. I do not know what they expect you to put in the 9 holes as anything you want to get to full size, will never have enough room. We didn’t do the herbs after seeing how yours turned out but we got lettuce packs and with 4 ( should have done 2 or maybe 3 at most), after a few weeks the ones in front were outpacing the back ones super fast. I wonder if your back row will star now. It was really strange how fast the 2 in the front outpaced the ones in the back.
Thanks for this video, Rob. I just cleaned mine out after a long hard year of growing peppers and lettuce plants. I just could not figure out how to take the top apart. I thought, for sure there must be a special tool they need to do that, so I just ran a bunch of bleach water through it hoping that would take care of any nasties. When you just popped yours apart, I stopped the video and took mine apart to find it was just as root bound as yours. I took a few minutes, cleaned it up, and then finished your video. Thanks again!
Great video, Rob! I really need to invest in one of these. It seems like the root structure grows more uniformly in the sponges. Plus it saves alot of space. Happy growing!
Nice video Rob. I like mine and recently learned about the plastic shipping material that can be used for a dome. I have a smaller footprint device that starts 31 but love it.
Rob it doesn't need the dome because this system is super saturated with water. The regular system would have required dome because the pump only provide water for 1 hr every 11 hrs.
@@7PotClub thanks mate, think your the first person ive ever inspired hahah, hopefully i will continue, all the best, hopefully start mine soon, will keep you posted
Were you able to pull the growths out of the plugs, or not because of the roots? I didn't see an update on that. Thank you :) Would love to know how you transplant too.
No, I waited too long and wasn't able to extract the extra seedlings. I transplant them into soil in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8tk3VEJSQr4.html
Yes, I transplant them into soil in my Hot Pepper Planting Spectacular 2020 video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8tk3VEJSQr4.html I'll also check in on them in a new video next week. Thanks for asking!
Hey there. That was pretty cool. I always thought you need to start the veggie seeds in the dark ? So that's what I've been doing and they do start fine but does it matter ? light or dark ? I like how long those starter things were but why are they sponges ? How are you supposed to get the seed off of them....I guess I wait & see huh :D Boy them pepper plans were not all that happy. Were the flavor any spicier that the regular size peppers ? I am hoping to make it to lowes today to get some seed starter. Thanks and have a great week you guys 👍😃👋
Hi Paivi! I think it's that you don't need light until they sprout. Think about seeds growing outside. 😀They are sponges because they soak up the water from the tank. They're made from peat and you can just plant the whole thing in a pot. The tiny peppers were not as hot as normal, but they had a good taste. Have a great week too! 🌶❤️
Great video as usual Rob! I may have to pick one of these up next year if I can fit it within my budget. Any tips for seeds that just won't seem to sprout? I've tried soaking them, seems like I can get other seeds to sprout in the same conditions but I'm really having trouble with my count dracula pepper.
I soak some seeds in weak tea for a day or two before planting. Putting the seeds in a wet paper towel inside of a plastic bag works pretty well. I'm trying that on the rest of that pack of 7 Pot Katies that didn't sprout.
After starting the seedlings, when you will transplant to their final pots... what is the recommended size for the pots for chili peppers? I enjoy a lot your channel, greetings from the Galilee. --- Ricky Marek,
Hi Ricky! I plant some in the ground, but the final pots run anywhere from 1.5 to 5 gallons. Going to try some 7 gallon fabric grow bags this year too. But first I transplant them into small pots or bags -- watch my latest video to see more! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8tk3VEJSQr4.html
Why is the pump not used for seed starting? It seems this is the best way to keep the tank clean. Any info on this appreciated - cannot find anywhere. Thanks!
Hi Rob, I am having trouble removing the pump from under the 9 hole tray to switch to the 50 seed starter tray. It just says remove by "firmly" pulling down. I have tried but worry I will break something. How did you do it?
Hi Vicky! Which model AeroGarden do you have? On my older Bounty, the top connects to the tube that comes up from the pump, but it's not a very tight fit. I just lift the top off.
@@7PotClub Thanks Rob! The box just says Bounty on it. I did get it apart and did not break anything! Now my next question is, I am starting strawberries from seed. I did not recieve that plastic dome thing you have with yours. Do you think just a layer of plastic wrap is okay?
The plastic dome was really just packing material that I repurposed. I only use that because our home is so dry in the winter. I don't think it's really needed in most cases, but plastic wrap would do the same thing.
I have an older 7 model and they no longer sell the seed starter. I made one from plastic but my question is; do they need the water pump and flow hooked up or can they sit in the water with the light? Thanks!
Do you mean they died because the seed hull didn't fall off the seedling? Try spraying them with water. You can also try to very gently remove the hull after wetting it down. I have about a 75% success rate doing that.
I have the seed starter as well. My dirt pods have A nasty green algae kinda like yours. But my plants are not growing. Is the algae bad? Can I get rid of it?
Last year was my first time starting seeds in the AeroGarden, and I waited to long to extract the extra seedlings. This year I may try again. Peter Stanley has done it successfully.
@@7PotClub Thanks for the reply. I will check him out. Right now mine are just sprouting. I think I will try to pull the weaker of the 2 seedlings once they get their first real leaves
Good question! The roots grow through the sponges, so you can't really remove them. They're made from peat moss, so it's OK to leave them on when you transplant.
You have to use the one that's made for your AeroGarden. Do you have the last generation Bounty like me? The newer model uses a different tray. I don't think they make the 50 pod tray anymore, but I did find one on eBay: www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-AeroGarden-Seed-Starting-System-f-Classic-Bounty-Ultra-Extra-THINK-SPRING/254805019225?epid=23030357879&hash=item3b53900a59:g:dwkAAOSw0vBf06B0 Again, only works with the older Bounty model.
Help please. 12 days ago I planted 144 super hot pepper seeds in 2 Jiffy 72 count greenhouses. I used distilled water and placed 1 seed in each pellet. Covered with the greenhouse lid and placed them both on their own germinating heating pads. Everything was placed in a small 2'6"x2'6"x2' Yield Lab grow tent. 3 days of darkness and then I turned on 2 small T5 lights 24/7 not to miss any plant from germinating. I've expected to see something pop by now. Saturday will be 2 weeks. Bakers creek and pepper head are where the seeds came from. Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks and god bless.
Hi Joe. Sorry your seeds aren't sprouting. A lot of superhots do take 2 weeks or longer to sprout, but it's strange you wouldn't have any coming up. I think it's very unlikely that all your seeds are bad. I've never used a grow tent, but I assume it's warm in there. Maybe the combination of the tent and the heat mats made it too warm? Did the seeds remain covered and moist at all time? It's hard to diagnose from afar, but hopefully you just need to wait a couple more days. A thought for the future: I do always plant at least 2 seeds in each cell, because germination is never 100%. And if the Jiffy pellets work for you, great. I've found that planting directly in a seed starting mix or potting mix works better for me. Good luck. I hope you see sprouts very soon. 😀🌱
@@7PotClub Their covered and moist all the time. I don't think the medium is warmer then 90°. Thanks for the feed back. I appreciate it. I'm guessing they need just a little more time. I'm hoping. Trying to plan everything correctly so I can start my tomato seeds soon.
Nice video, Rob! I'm starting to get some sprouts on mine. It's a nice system, a very small footprint for starting 50 plants. Regarding the extras that come up, in my experience, you can safely extract them when they're very young before the roots get established. When there's just a tap root. It's hit or miss, sometimes they break off. I have a video on it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z9oPf1Fhoxk.html
Thanks Peter! I was just about to search your channel for a video like that. I knew you'd probably already covered the subject. I'm afraid I've waited too long, but I might try to gently extract a few.
The seed starting system is for starting seedling to grow outdoors. The regular deck is what is used for growing plants to maturity indoors. We do that too! Check out our other AeroGarden videos.
Yes, I'm pretty sure it's because I hacked up the roots so much extracting 2 plants. Plus I hadn't been siphoning out and replacing the water for some time. My negligence there.
Don't get much for 30 dollars now if it came with the light be more worth it>> he hee what i use them wal mart chicken rotisseries trays come with a dome lid > awesome eat my chicken, and get a seed starter FREE ! >>> all for $ 4.99 I fine things on the cheap! So that 6 whole rotisserie chickens, and 6 seed starters for 30 bucks
426 SUPER BEE that’s the only thing that bothers me about the AeroGarden. Unless there’s an AWESOME sale, they are still really pricey. I got one as a gift. Never ending lettuce right now as I kept getting sick from contaminated romaine. Expensive yes, but no more getting sick from supermarket lettuce. For me it’s a win. The other problem is like Rob, I have 9 pods but there’s only room for 2 “maybe 3” heads of lettuce so I’ve been looking into DIY options using Rubbermaid totes for 1/3 of the price and are actually a usable size. I’m going to play with the AeroGarden some more.
