HD Video of the Aerolite 103 Ultralight Aircraft at Deland Sport Aviation Showcase 2018. Dennis Carley explains to Bill Whitley WHY he should buy this aircraft. WhitleyVideos Channel - / whitleyvideos
Looked into ultralights about 15yrs ago and Aerolite was one I had considered. After awhile, I figured I would be just too tall for something like that and didn't get into flying. Nice to see Aerolite is still around, even with a different company. With Dennis Carley saying he can fit in it at 6'2", maybe my 6'5" size wouldn't be as bad as I thought. Something to consider. 15 yrs ago, Sport Pilot was still being talked about, and now I'm looking into that as a way to get into flying. I'm just a little heavier so a two-seat plane might be the way to go if I could ever afford a plane. Thanks for going over this aircraft. It's very informative.
Brad, thank you for your your input. Both Dennis Carley and Bill Whitley are not only very knowledgeable about ultralight aircraft, they have the ability to explain the details to all of us. Regards, Wayne
I have a T Bird, a very similar design but a tail dagger. I have Stits clear aerothane on them and this is easy and quick to apply and it really extends the life of the sails.
I am very impressed with this little plane and this is the plane that I have been leaning toward purchasing for my first one. I have been studying the different types of 103 aircraft and so far for the workmanship, cost and durability this one seems to be the right one. I will just need to learn it's flight characteristics but it appears to be pretty straight forward.
@@williamwhitley1174......There is a person who is about 20 miles from me who teaches new comers to the ultralight world of flying and his primary aircraft that he uses for teaching is the Challenger ll. He also (from what I understand) is an authorized dealer for the Challenger aircraft.
I got a kick out of the antagonist act by the "potential buyer" character! I thought it was comically entertaining. And countering, the manufacturer delivered his "lines" in the perfect manner, such that "the pessimist" was thwarted at every turn! Again, a smile appeared on my face over and over as I watched and listened. Most importantly, COUNTLESS attributes of the Aerolite 103 aircraft were thoroughly and clearly detailed for the viewer. A fine video in all respects! Two Thumbs Up!!!
Thank you for your insightful comment. You broke the code, this was the intent of the video, to entertain, inform and pass along honest answers to a number of questions our viewers might have. Bravo to you, BigFiveJack. Thank you again, Wayne Whitley
You guys did a great job with the protagonist and antagonist views. You managed to entertain and give a lot of insight into what the actual aircraft is made of and how it functions. You also managed to highlight a lot of positives. Well done guys !!!
redlywaxer, Thank you for your comment. I am glad you enjoyed my video. Dennis and Bill did a great job. I would also love to have an Aerolite 103. Regards, Wayne Whitley
I was always wondering why flaps are necessary at this kind of airplane. My Carlson didn't have flaps and it worked perfectly without. The drag is quite substantial as it is.
Thank You for your comment, DaveTW. You have made a great choice. Please make sure you complete transition training from a Light Sport CFI so that you will be fully prepared to solo in the single place Aerolite 103. Best of Luck and safe flying. Regards, Wayne Whitley
1967davethewave I’ve been saving as well, and ironically.. my stimulus check is the literal miracle that shifted things into the realm of possibility. My late uncle was a pilot (and my hero) so I’ve had at least a good amount of training in the fundamentals of aerodynamics and He’s let me take the yoke and do some turns and things.. I really hope you got your plane and wish ya blue skies! From central Missouri
Wow! Very nice retro fitted with a parachute? Fantastic!. Would rather have a bigger dash panel with GPS. This plane is incredible! I want one! Love the electric start
Enjoyed the "adversarial approach" to your really nice 103, Dennis. About "100 years" ago, I was living in Rockledge, Fl. I was in need of a new Voltage Rectifier/regulator for my Rotax 503. I looked for one on the web, and received an e mail from you. You said: "Give me your address, I have one of those on the shelf that I'll give you." Was an old "866-080," You sent it and I installed it on my old EROS Mini-max. Flew N76395T for 13 years - tried to put 1,000 hrs on it, but had to retire it at around 750 or so, hours. My wood and fabric (recovered 3 times) finally gave it up - never was in a hangar - always tied down on the ramp. Was tied down at Valkaria airfield - Merritt Island - and the old Rockledge airport (they might be closed now.) One time we talked, via e mail, and you offered me a ride in your Storch - through my laziness, never got to Deland. One of these days, I'll be looking hard at your 103. Lost my interest a long time ago in GA, - liked the Experimental Amateur Class, but now my sights are on a nice 103, like yours. Thanks Dennis. mike Donavon, Hopewell Va.
I can see at last you guys have placed the Power Lever/ Brake on the correct side, the R.H side, as per GA aircraft. I couldn't understand why it was on the left !
Robert, thank you for your comment, I am planning to produce a flying video of the Aerolite 103 as soon as I work out a schedule with Dennis Carley at U-flyit. Keep tuned and subscribe to my channel for that update. Wayne Whitley
Dude, there's tons of vids of them flying on You Tube......I'm sure they all fly the same..despite the color differences.....Here's a couple...ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oQKTN9tOptM.html...........ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--xl61uAKQnk.html
Just starting to get interested in flying looking at that open cockpit just wondering has anybody‘s cell phone slipped out of their pocket and took the final dive? I mean no floor or anything which to stop it. Just a thought not that it would keep me from flying one I would just make sure everything on me is secure. One last question, do any of you pilots listen to music while you fly?
Do you offer flight training for these aircraft ? Assuming some experience but not PPL rated ? Would also like to know typical storage situations (hangar, tie down, covers, etc and typical costs Local to you in FL) - I would then be able to talk to my local airport about various options. In all honesty I've been looking at PPG's but I'm still not convinced of their safety. Fixed wing to me is more stable and has less aeronautical unknowns.
Is there any maneuvers on your chute, where you can steer & safely land your craft in the event of an emergency🤔?? I believe I read somewhere, there's safisticated chutes that takes your aircraft back to a programed locations to avoid damages to aircraft!
I just love the man in grey shirt. He asked all the right questions for dummy’s. 😍👍 Only one question left out : 1) can I fold the wings foe storage in a container ? 2) two seater ?
I love the blue and white. Those are the colors I want come the day I can afford a 103. A provision to carry a small duffel bag would be nice. Maybe bungeed on top of the fuel tank. One deadly problem is the huge vertical fin/rudder. That, the top-mounted motor, and the hanging landing gear paint a large radar profile. If a surface-to-air missile is launched, where are the electronic countermeasures and chaff dispensers?
Can you only fly these in rural areas? I live in the city and I imagine all surrounding areas is controlled airspace. Also, can these take off and land at general aviation airports or do you have to use ultralight specific airfields?
Use your radio, and get a transponder. Know the rules and I can't imagine why you wouldn't be allowed to fly over urban areas or out of GA airports. Top speed is right up there close to a cub. There will of course be those airports you would not want to fly in or out of. Class B for example. Messing around with a 777 in a 250 lb airplane does not sound fun at all. Wake turbulence would ruin your new years plans. Many GA airports, in fact most, are uncontrolled anyway.
Trip, the Aerolite 103 is limited in its payload and range by the FAA part 107 rule. If you can not safely stow the guitar case or overnight bag and still meet the Part 103 rule, than you will just have to enjoy flying around. You may want to pose your question to Dennis Carley at Uflyit.com Regards, Wayne Whitley

I wish they would say in first minute what take-off length and landing length it needs...my north 40 field may not be enough. Use the chute...25’ landing.
chicagorandy, you ask a Good question. Since the Aerolite 103 is a single place aircraft, it is necessary to have transition training using a two-place aircraft for you and your Certified Flight Instructor (CFI). The Challenger II is one of those options. I have a number of videos on my channel regarding Challenger II flight training and Aerolite 103 transition training. Best of luck in your aviation pursuits. Regards, Wayne Whitley
Looks and sounds great but I'd prefer something with the engine up front, sitting on top there must create a lot more drag and therefore less performance.
On the other hand, you don't have the prop blast in your face and the noise is lessened by having the prop and engine above and behind you. the amount of drag is not different enough to consider.
Thank you jcperine for your question. Please email Dennis Carley at aerolite@uflyit.com or call 386-738-4444 for expert help with your question. Regards, Wayne
Looks like a very nice plane like it’s built very nice my question is that engine Kawasaki engine what what kind of price I think it’s a small engine that’s all I need what is the price thank you
Donald, thank you for your comments and question. Please select the "Show More" tab in the description for links to costs for all the engine options. Regards, Wayne Whitley
Alright, Mr. Devil's Advocate, we get your trying real hard to be the customer from hell. lol I really like this ultra-light! Neat, clean, and safe, too. And a 103 status to keep it inexpensive.
Watch too many aviation videos. I've seen multiple interviews with Aerolite owner. He's knowledgeable, patient, willing to answer ALL kinds of questions, explains things well and thoroughly. From what i can tell, his company's product lands right in the sweet spot between safety, DIY and flyability. I'm cheap as they come and I dunno why anyone would buy a used Aerolite 103 ... or any other ultralight.
Iain, thank you for your question. I suggest you speak with Dennis Carley at www.uflyit.com/aerolite103main.htm. He is the best source for Aerolite 103 information. Regards, Wayne Whitley
Lea, thank you for your comment. Bill played a role very well and brought out the best from Dennis to inform everyone of the merits that makes the AeroLite 103 such a great aircraft. Regards, Wayne Whitley
@@WhitleyVideos I did my private license over 20 years ago and all I had left to do was the cross country flight. Getting the itch to pick up flying again and this seems like a super fun way to do it. How many hours to get good at flying one of these and what would you recommend I do?
