I've been watching your videos for years and can't thank you enough for all the amazing tips you're handing out. But what really baffles me is how insanely steady you are on your hand, really impressive!

By far you present the clearest videos of welding I've seen - very impressive work that I bet many schools have great use of! (I'm not a pro welder but machinist and instructor so I appreciate your channel and what you do for the manufacturing community)

I appreciate all your videos and I admire your skills and dedication to teach and pass on the knowledge. My dad use to take me to his work every Friday night at the local saw mill up in northern California on night shift when I was 8 years old. My dad was a saw filer he taught me to stick weld and tig weld I would stay up all night every Friday at my dad's work and just weld random objects. Later in life at 18 I got a job at the saw mill as a millwright labor then to an apprentice, then to journeyman millwright 16 years later I started my own mobil welding business.

Morning Jody☕️ Don’t know how I missed this in my e mail. The stop/start test you do is a great idea, more real world👍 I passed my D17.1 tests on 4130, 17-7, and Titanium with help from your videos and a lot of torch time with my old Syncrowave 300. I choked on the inconel and aluminum tests though.😖 Back to work! Thank you for the great content!👊

So a welder who worked for the air force once told me that for fun they would challenge each other to remove the aluminum foil from a gum rapper and weld two pieces together. He said the irony was that amongst the guys involved, The challenge was more about finding a machine capable rather than the person.

It looks like you run a closer to 90deg torch angle when running the clear cup than you do with the ceramic. I guess that is an advantage of being able to see thru the cup you get a better approach.

Another great tip we used at GEAE was to make sure you clean your filler wire and plate with a clean rag with acetone. Giving less chance of any porosity from the base metal and filler wire.

Test to weld on stuff that belongs to the USAF used to be butt (like in the video), fillet, and tube to plate. So three welds for each of eight metal groups. 4130, 321, 17-7, 718, L605, 6AL-4V, 6061, and Mag. Later they changed it to the same eight metal groups, but a single thin-wall 1" pipe in 6G. One stop-start, 6-12 and 12-6. No larger than a #8 cup.

Question as a new welder/tig welder: what's being done/how does the breathing in these fumes while welding affect lungs and breathing? Is there techniques in slow breathing while welding? Is there breath masks? I'm sure/hope there's heavy vacuums going within the shops in ur work Station depending on company? I guess I'm just simply asking how can welders breathe clearly while working? Yes, I have not started yet, but have practiced outside with extreme ventilation. But the videos I've seen to learn knowledge have almost always been indoors-ish. I know I need to ALWAYS learn safety first.

Hey Jody why not do a video on stick welding end craters and how to fill them in? I've searched RU-vid and there is scant info on this. Currently I just fill in the crater with a spot weld or two ten seconds after I finish the main weld, but I don't think that's how pros do it. An example using 6010 would be best.

I also been denied twice from lockeed, my father works there also. It’s very difficult for a welder to get “ your foot in the door”. He suggest to apply to a different department and network through the company to change departments. I just got hired to delta airlines and going through the fingerprinting process. Wish me luck.

Hello there, can you please check this video, this is SpaceX Tig plate test, is a 3/16 stainless steel plate and the other is just weld on the top of it. And demonstrated how you maybe can weld this workout running the cup. Must be handfree. Also the weld can't burn the edge of the top plate. Thanks in advance

The D17.1 Aerospace certification doesn't allow you to start, stop or tack the center of your weld test piece. At least that's how it was for me during testing. I'd say 35-40Amps is plenty for this thickness of metal considering these thick test fixtures do take some heat away.
@weldingtipsandtricks
@weldingtipsandtricks 3 года назад
D17.1 does not stipulate starts and stops. But companies have the freedom to add stipulations like that.

I have a very small area to shoot a training video while welding. The analogy is a dental hygentist working with 2 tools inside the size of a small mouth. I need to get a high quality video camera inside and not be obstructed by hands, etc. I will also need to add quite a bit of neutral density to knock down the bright light. The camera in some instances will need to curve/bend into place like an endoscope but maintain HD quality-any ideas as to video camera types to pull this off?

My recommendation would be that you don't weld your plate like this unless they ask you to. I've never been asked to weld it like this. They have always wanted the butt joint welded straight across without stopping. They want to see that you can weld without having to stop every few inches.

With a Lincoln square wave tig 175 is 3/32 2% lanthanated all you need for aluminum or do you need to go up a size for max amps with this machine
@ItsDdvdd
@ItsDdvdd 3 года назад
Depends on material thickness. 200amps is max for 3/32 in my experience, so you'd have a proportionate setup with what you have. You would benefit from preheating the aluminum for anything thicker than .25" I'd also recommend 2% ceriated for AC, seemed to be the best for me in terms of tip retention. Balls up nice if you flatten it to around 1/16 diameter
