In September 2015, Aerovelo's Eta Speedbike set a new world record in human powered speed by going 139.45 km/hr (86.65 mph). Visit www.aerovelo.ca for more details.
The Eta Speedbike Project is the continuation of Aerovelo's quest to promote new ways of thinking about lightweight, efficient design. Eta's record represents the fastest speed that a human has been able to travel under their own power: breaking highway speed limits with less than 1 horsepower.

How can you or could you convert the ability to leg press a thousand pounds to forward momentum and how about total output arms and legs ( and still steer) for maximum speed
@amightysailingman
@amightysailingman 3 года назад
The legs alone already use almost 100% of available cardiovascular output. Trying to involve the much weaker arms would just deprive leg muscles of essential oxygen.

@amightysailingman
@amightysailingman 3 года назад
If you'd be willing to pay to bring in a pro and train him for months to achieve maximum output in the recumbent position, then maybe the team would consider it.
@casualguy393
@casualguy393 2 года назад
You do realize that you must have the perfect combination of body size and power output to make the vehicle as small as possible because wind resistance is greater the larger your vehicle is. This means a smaller rider with a lower power output still slices through the air more quickly than a larger rider with more power does.
@DeadRoman
@DeadRoman 2 года назад
@@casualguy393 Not true at all. Aerodynamic cross section is a very small component of of total coefficient of drag. Basically, there is no size difference in human cyclists at the highest echelon that would effect the shape of one of these vehicles enough to be a factor in any calculation. The answer to winning these competitions is to find the cyclist who can maintain the highest wattage output for the required amount of time, and then build your shell around him. The only drag variable thats even a factor in these bikes is the turbulent areas around the wheels and where boundry layers interface between the road, and the wheel openings. If you calculated the flat plate drag of the wetted area of any one of these bikes, they would all be within 10’s of thousandths of each other. The answer to winning is in the motor, and none of these teams get a pro level cyclist to ride for them. When one of these teams gets together the funds to hire a top tier 1km guy, they will break every record in the books by a mile.
@casualguy393
@casualguy393 2 года назад
@@DeadRoman So you are telling me that having 2 different bikes built in the exact same shape, 1 is bigger for a big guy and 1 smaller for a small guy, are going to have the exact same amount of drag?
@DeadRoman
@DeadRoman 2 года назад
@@casualguy393 No, thats not what I am telling you at all, nor at any point did I even imply that. Though, I can give you examples of that exact scenario occurring. I am telling you that drag is a function of many different variables, and size differences in a bike based on the dimensions of 2 different cyclists will play an almost un noticeable part. Shape and surface finish are more important than size. Wetted area, boundry layer turbulence, and laminar flow are way more important when it comes to drag calculations.

I feel that a bike design is inefficient for maximizing human powered speed. utilizing so little of a human body's strength.. Why not design a vehicle that's essentially a rowing machine coupled to a transaxle for superior gear ratioing or a flywheel than a traditional bike chain setup. enlist the talent of a champion gold medalist rower... and make history. the power output that a rower can put out in one row, is magnitudes higher than the the power output of the amount of revolutions that a bicyclist can do with pedals in the same time frame. Plus if allowed, could incorporate a flywheel as well to store any potential excess energy to pass to transaxle or wheels between rows, so there's minimal slow down/powerloss. Also a 4 wheel design for stability, with 2 of the wheels retracting above a certain speed, can make this design possible so the device can stand upright when stopped or at slow speed, but ditch the extra 2 wheels to reduce rolling drag when they aren't needed above the speed which the device can balance itself on two wheels. Gotta think outside the box, and don't hang on to restrictive or "traditional" designs usually based around bicycles.

It is a good idea to analyze why you feel like that. In engineering, sometimes our intuition is right, and sometimes is wrong. Every time you think someone thinks inside a box, it is a good idea to learn why they do that. We looked into rowing ideas. Main issue is that the arms cannot move to generate power. If we use the arms, we make the steering impossible. The steering on these bikes is very tricky. Second, the legs are able to harness all the power the body can produce over the 3-5 min run. If we use more muscles, we split the available power between legs and arms and spine, instead of using it all in the legs. Third, the rowing would mean the upper body moves. This is bad for aerodynamics, it makes a much bigger bike to allow the space to move. The upper body of our rider is stuck and compressed by the fairing. Fourth, the drivetrain would be more complex for a rowing machine. Bike components are figured out, and they work very well. There are areas where our design can be improved, for sure, but nobody got close to this record yet. Might get back into making bikes when someone beats the record.
@peterboneg
@peterboneg 3 года назад
The momentum of the bike prevents slowdown between rows. No need for a heavy flywheel.
@LycanWitcher
@LycanWitcher 3 года назад
@@peterboneg flywheel would offset the speed loss from the rower repositioning for the next row. No different than if you watch rowers on water, where you can see a significant speed loss when they slide forward in preparation for the next row caused literally from the shifting of mass opposing the direction of the boat rather than solely from the friction of the water. Just needs to be big enough to offset that speed loss. A dual mass flywheel could be good in this application.
