In this video, i will share some tips and tricks on creating masks using Affinity Photo. Instead of converting a selection to a mask directly, we will create a pixel layer first. This allows us to easily make modifications.
With the help of the multiply blend mode, we can simulate a mask to test it.

I have been compositing for decades, and have always struggled with halos. In past times, I would hand paint the halos out. This is the most complete, clear, and helpful video. I have seen among all on RU-vid university. Thank you so much. I just subscribed!

I really wish Affinity allowed the use of the Selection modifiers while in the Quick Mask preview. It would be so useful to be able to see the true effect of feathering etc. in live preview.

That would be cool indeed! You can however use regular layer tools to make changes (the quick mask preview is actually Edit as Layer function)

People with the iPad version shouldn’t even attempt all the excellent ideas you explain so well, because they don’t exist. I have never been more frustrated with a piece of professional software than with Photo 2 for iPad.

First thank you.. Can you maybe share what problems you encounter (maybe i can make a short video about it)? From my experience most of the desktop features are available.. what i miss mostly is the procedural textures and macros.

@@Graphicalfinity Top of the list is the clunky handling of Layers, where changing a layer’s name takes a list of actions and actually changing the window - for each one! - just what an artist needs when doing a little file-keeping (sarc). Many dozens of features are so much better done with key commands so, gee, maybe Affinity should show a subtle reminder every time the user forgets what some deeply buried touch icon responds to. Instead, the user must keep using the deeply buried touch icon OR completely break the flow of creativity by changing the screen to a different application entirely, where we can do a search and read some. C’MON! The temporary help button which names the icons around the edge of the screen isn’t doing most users any good at all. Make it contextual to drill down to the function the user appears to be working on. That is not the least bit common in software. On an iPad, if I have to change the entire display to look for some narrowly focused help, Affinity has failed me. This is way more than just a UI problem; it is very poor coding. I honestly believe the iOS coding people are new hires working their way into the business by learning the software at the user’s expense. That impression comes to mind every time I use a control that needs to be set to 2.3 or maybe even 2.8, but just breathing on it gives me 2,391 or 0 - take my pick. I’ve lost count of the instances where this is typical behavior. Every software needs to be learned before it ceases being a complete PITA. Affinity’s iPad versions don’t have a learning curve, they have a mystery game of chutes and ladders featuring brick walls and tarpits wherein the designer decides helping is not their job. Just FYI, I am an instructor-level ProTools user, a capable Vectorworks CAD user, and a FileMaker programmer. I mention those so you won’t think I’m just lost. 🤗 Thank you very much for asking.

It means that if I mask any image with this method, the unmasked areas outside the bounderies (canvas) will not appear? I'm facing a lot of issues when I mask things out and when I move them around, the cut edges appear and I need to paint black all over again until everything is cleared, apart from my masked subject.

I understand exactly what you mean... and that is indeed very frustrating (not only when you move it but also when you apply effects etc). Check out an older video from me (method 3) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j8jszUpmSM0.html I'll try to upload an updated video on the subject.

excellent tutorial, but really also shows how badly affinity photo needs a subject and background AI masking to greatly speed up the process?
@hdframez

AI will never be as good as manual work.
@ColdCoffeePhotography
@ColdCoffeePhotography 8 месяцев назад
@@hdframez Yes I totally agree - but as a hobbyist I don't want to spend hours editing all my shots, so a quick AI subject or background mask that say gets you 95% of the way in a few seconds helps if that makes sense?

Good point! But it always good to have some masking skills in your toolbox :)

Good tips if you only use Affinity. Other apps like Photomator and Pixelmator Pro have much better AI masking tools. Of course Photoshop has much more advancedAI masking.

Very true! But even AI is not perfect, always good to have masking skills :)
