People seem to think "wildlife" with a 500mm lens but there's so much more you can do with this long tele with no stabilization. Think in terms of compression ... 1) Mountain ranges that overlap one another 2) A long street in a busy city 3) A close-up model with a HUGE full moon (or similar secondary subject) in the background 4) Optical illusions like a giant or miniature person next to a normal sized person (done by having 2nd model either close or far from camera but keeping both models in focus). 5) Moonshots 6) He never talked about the close focusing distance ... depending on what that is, you can do quite a lot of things with that too. 7) FILM-MAKING! 8) Candid video captures

I disagree with anyone who says its useless due to the missing autofocus. The image quality is great for a full frame 500mm lens especially considering its cost. The relatively low price for a recently developed product lets it compete with modern lenses in photography, if you are not planning to capture fast action reliably at least. I can also see its uses for filmmaking. In my opinion the fact that its under 350USD makes it a good product because its a very affordable quality entry into super telephoto glass. It fills a niche but it does it exceptionally well.

First of all…. 500mm is NOT SUPER-TELE range yet, probably 600mm+ can be considered as super-tele, but i would even say anything below 800mm is „just“ longer tele end. Also, above 300$ is a lot given the fact its far from modern or good (in a 2023+ sense, no stabilizer, no autofocus!!!) If you want affordable 500mm (or more…) the Sigma 150-600C lenses are AWESOME for its price. I got one for 650€ 2nd hand (about 600$ for the US) in basically new shape, was only used once. I would LOVE to throw instead of 350€ for a „new“ „vintage“ manual focus, UNSTABILIZED lens about 500-2000€ for either: EF 100-400 Mk1, about 350-500€, only with much luck you get the Mk2 for about 700€ which is really great (basically a professional 100-400 5.6 zoom!) Sigma 150-600C… easily for 500-700€ with a little bit patience Sigma 60-600 DSLR version, sadly this was also out of range for me with 1600€+ 2nd hand 2nd hand Canon RF 100-500L, some sell it already, new its about 2700€ and 2nd hand i saw already some for 2100€ I mean, to be honest, as Canon EF and RF lens user… i have a lot of choice, not only lens options but so much options in different price classes and from nice 25 year old (autofocus!) glass to more „modern“ lenses from 2008-2016 in different price ranges. Especially regarding to the EF/DSLR lenses which work just perfectly and better on mirrorless.

@@harrison00xXx Super Telephoto is not clearly defined. However, your opinion is definitely not the definition if we go by leading manufacturers information. If their definitions are not correct, whose is? Canon says their RF100-500 offers superb super telephoto power. Sony calls their FE100-400GM a super-telephoto zoom. Nikkons NIKKOR Z 400mm f4.5 VS is a super-telephoto according to them. (Imo supertele starts somewhere between 200-400mm) And about the 2nd part, comparing prices of new and second hand products is a bit misleading in a review as depending on location value will vary a lot. If we even the playing field you could say that the ttartisan will be available used for less than 150-200€ in a year. Regardless of that, most of your comparable lenses in 2nd hand condition literally cost multiples of the ≈300€. Edit: I own the sel200600g myself and have used it for wildlife enough to understand the limitations of a manual 500mm lens
@harrison00xXx
@harrison00xXx 11 месяцев назад
@@chas1878 yes they are like 2-3x the price, but what you get is a nearly completely different and better experience I saved a lot of bucks once at camera gear. Cheaping out also worked not too bad, but as soon things are getting specialized, as tele/supertele range and wildlife or astro dedicated stuff, demands are getting extremely up. I could also shoot planes with a handheld slingshot, but instead its better to get at least something a bit more appropriate. Thats what i want to say mainly. Remember the scene in the first avatar movie as the Navi shot with bows at the military helicopters? Thats the equivalent of using a manual 500 6.3 lens for birding
@larbueno

This TTArtisan's lens could be a great lens for bird shooting, too. I shoot a lot of bird video and have never used auto focus. I'm blessed to have a huge North Ametican video collection at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, all footage shot with super-sharp, super zoom video lenses on large broadcast video camcorders. The 40x Canon lens I used (Cornell's) was much larger and heavier than any Canon 600 or 800mm stills😮 lens....way bigger and several times pricier. The tripod and head used in those bird-behavior shoots weighed over 25 pounds! That huge video 😮lens was manual focus, manual iris only. To follow small, fast birds like warblers high in tree canopies required following the bird as it moved, adjusting focus and opening and closing the iris as the light quickly changed...all at the same time! It's wasn't easy, but was the only way to follow a moving bird. So I say this now to let anyone know that this TTArtisans 500mm lens might be a great bargain for your use if you're willing to learn how to focus manually. I now use a Sigma Contemorary 150-600mm on a Panasonic Lumix GH6 and shoot 4k video and stills. I use that lens all manual and love it, in spite of the not-perfect, skinny manual focus ring. Best value long tele-zoom on the market!
@harrison00xXx
@harrison00xXx 11 месяцев назад
You know how stiff the focus mechanism is? I dont know as well, but the reviews i saw mentioned all a very hard to turn focus and its stiff mechanism. Good for precision, but sounds hard for faster changes without wobbling a lot, even on a tripod. Also your Sigma part with the 150-600C, you really USE manual focus on this lens? Do you have any additional or bigger grip on the focus ring? I absolutely HATE to use this MF ring, its stiff, NOT SMOOTH so it doesnt allow for any good looking focus pull in video, also precision is with the stickyness also an issue. On top its super small and and not where my hand typically is on the lens when holding it for shooting. Sigma 150-600C is the worst manual focus experience i ever had, even worse than autofocus lenses where you can not use manual focus at all as long its in AF mode. I have only used yet the following manual focus rings in those tele/supertele lenses: - EF 100-400L Mk2 - RF 100-500L - Sigma 150-600C - RF 800 F11 The RF 100-500 and 800 F11 focus rings are SUPER SMOOTH, allow for precise, fast and smooth focus pulling all together. The EF 100-400 II is slightly worse, but still more comparable to the RF lenses and still good. But the Sigma 150-600C has the WORST MF rings of all camera lenses i ever had, also noticable worse than the lenses mentioned above.

I have 2 vintage lenses with my Sony A600, just for practice using long lenses bought 2months ago. Both off UK eBay, and Both M42 Screw threads A Prinzgalaxy 400mm F6.3. These were made in Japan, and sold under many other different brand names. I bought for £14 posted. 2nd Lens is a Soligor 350mm f5.6. Again made in Japan, and sold under different brand names. This cost £13 posted So, combined with the lenses focal length, and the crop factor of 1.5 on my A6000. I have a 600mm f6.3, and a 525mm f5.6. Also as an added bonus on Sony ASPC Crop sensors, there's a feature called "Clear Image Zoom" which adds another, x1.4 or x2, to the already 600mm and 525mm. The big downside as mentioned to these long lenses in the very shallow depth of field, even as low as f11, It makes accurate focusing difficult, but a lot of fun, The focus peaking is a major help 😊

Great review, Matti. Based on this review and several others, I bought one and just received mine yesterday. I bought the EF version with a EF-MFT adapter for my Olympus E-M1 Mk III. I'm using it for plane spotting, and will do lunar and solar (with filter) photography too. I don't find the focus ring to be all that stiff. Maybe newer versions of the lens have been improved in this area. It is stiffer than my Olympus lenses, but it still feels good and is easy to dial in focus. Since M43 uses the center of the image circle, I see very little fringing and it is very sharp corner-to-corner at f/8 and just about perfect at f/11. I am not very happy with the K&F Concept EF-MFT adapter, however. It wiggles on the MFT side and is very tight on the EF side. Going to try a Fotodiox adapter.

I have a Nikon 400mm f/5.6 AIS (manual focus) lens, and I love it. The tt-artisan lens is a stop slower, but I don't see that as a big problem, especially since you get another 100mm. Landscape, and slow moving or stationary animals are good targets. I like to take that lens to a cliff that overlooks Puget Sound. There is a nice view of Mt Tahoma (aka Mt Rainier) and the port of Tacoma. Besides the scenery and the harbor lights, there are the ships and sailboats that can make nice images. Not for following a basketball game. ;-)

Me too, I have a 400mm f5.6 old Nikon F mount, but it's a knock off, a Vivitar. It works perfectly. I prefocus in the nest or in the branch and shoot when birds land or take. I use for sunsets too, from the top of my building, I go to the roof with my tripod and take pictures of the city in sunset.

That lens would have been handy yesterday as I was street shooting in Tacoma and there are good view points to the port from uptown. And Mt. Tahoma was out, shining bright over the cityscape (typically hiding). My longest lens for that shoot was a 90mm on full frame so I passed up photos of the port in the Blue hour as the lights were coming on. However the price of this 500mm bazooka lens is cheap enough to maybe add it to my kit, especially for those offshore lighthouses that sit off the coast, hmm.

I used to shoot soccer with a 400 mm manual focus nikor and got great shots of a player heading the ball or a tight shot at political rallies of a speaker. You're right Mattie, when you're shooting with Emmanuel lens and you nail that focus it's very satisfying.

I would still recommend to up the budget just a bit at least, even if it means to be a bit patience. I bought as well a 75-300 lens long ago with the goal of „reach“, for wildlife that was the only sub 500$ (2nd hand….) option once for effective 480mm (on Canon APS-C) It was HORROR to use… stabilizer was bad, but it helped at least manual focussing, since not only the lens was bad in focussing, but a outdated, entry level body for 70$ 2nd hand wasnt good either and AF barely worked. I had to rely on manual focus, it was better than AF with this heavily cheaped out setup. It was basically THAT BAD of an experience, as much i wanted to photograph wildlife (stationary subjects, didnt even think about BIF with this crappy gear), it was super frustrating and i barely was motivated to go out birding. Took me like 4000 shots and multiple MONTHS to get a single, halfway usable shot which was realistically also bad (cropped 2MP image out of an old 18MP sensor with a not really sharp lens). Ofc manual focus was used. But this shot made me think once:“No more frustrating experience, im looking for a upgrade“, at least a somewhat usable autofocus and a bit more range was on my list, beside good stabilizer. I ended up with a 700€ 2nd hand Canon RF 800 F11 and a 650€ (2nd hand, ofc…) Sigma 150-600C on a pretty expensive EOS R7. The R7 was a „little bit“ of overkill for sure, but those lenses are giving so much value for wildlife/tele/supertele interests. Also, i dont see 550-700$ as much more expensive than 350$ for this 500 6.3, especially considering they are at least on par when it comes to image quality but so much advantages like stabilizer, autofocus, etc. The Sigma 150-600C i would recommend so much more over this 500 6.3 manual lens and you can get it for less than 2x the price 2nd hand.

Would be interesting to put this up against the old cheap Doerr / Walimex etc. 500 mm f8 lenses with a T2 adapter that have been around for ages.
@harrison00xXx
@harrison00xXx 11 месяцев назад
The older might perform even nearly comparable. But look at modern Walimex 800mm mirror lenses and the clones, all together are WORSE than the old ones which really had some usable image quality and especially sharpness. But not a bit worse, the difference is like „super bad“ vs „not great but ok“. Considering HOW GOOD this 500 6.3 looks like, you could even compare it to a Canon RF 600 F11, any 500-600mm lightweight prime or a 300-400mm lens on APS-C or MFT, hell even the new Nikon 600 6.3 PF which costs like 4500$. All i can say…. its definately not recommended. I began wildlife with a 75-300 IS USM lens on APS-C (DSLR), a combo of a entry level, 3 year old DSLR and a 10 year old entry level full frame tele-zoom. I upgraded to mirrorless and the RF 800 F11, not only for reach, stabilizer etc, but also for AUTOFOCUS. the old 75-300 combined with a old DSLR (and misaligned AF sensors… back/frontfocus!) was just utterly garbage in autofocus, super unprecise, junky and problematic, to the point manual focus and focus peaking was BETTER. I cant say anymore that i intentionally would want to use manual focus, except for wildlife (video only!) with a lot of disturbing foliage for the AF system. And even when using manual focus, i would prefer my smooth and easy going electronic focus ring (moving the AF motor) over the stiff focus mechanism this 500 6.3 has.

I also dont get people buying into something like this. Just considering the options out there…. Sigmas 150-600Cs existence and its 2nd hand price is enough reason to avoid this manual 500 6.3 if possible. Older mirror lenses (DONT buy the new ones!) like 500, 600 or 800mm Walimex are sometimes cheap AND good as well. Just dont cheap out, especially on Teles. I cheaped out too much with a Sigma 150-600C for like 600€ but its somewhat usable and worth its money. Even more cheaped out was a like 200$ 75-300mm lens on a 70$ fked up entry level DSLR which nearly killed my interest in photography entirely as i used this old budget gear for about 2-3 years.

If you talk about the satisfaction when getting a wildlife shot of a moving subject tack sharp, you better also talk about the frustrating nature of knowing you didnt got the shot because lack of equpiment or even just „too bad equipment“, which will happen A LOT with those lenses. i guess focussing on a manual 500 6.3 isnt much easier than doing on 50mm 1.4s wide open where it looks as if the focus is on point, but the eyes are far from sharp then despite a properly set up focus peaking. At least when focussing on my manual, vintage 1.4s and so, i always have to use the magnification, 5x at least, rarely 10x. For me, even my reach combo (R7 + RF 800 F11) or with the 150-600C Sigma as universal and mainly photo (handheld) or video (tripod) usage, they have often HEAVY drawbacks which let me think about going for a 100-500L RF lens and a R6 II, R8 at least. Especially when i know too good that some situations would have ended up with AWESOME results i didnt get because of lacking autofocus speed or precision, doesnt matter now if its camera related (R7 has some problems regarding to AF speed in not perfect conditions) or lens related (RF 800 noticable slower than 100-500 and a pain to follow anything at 1280mm, Sigma 150-600C anyways known for autofocus issues) At least i know, many shots were not possible and i HATE IT, either due a lack of light and working stabilizer (Sigma 150-600C handheld), missing zoom to go little wider, bad MFD like the 6m of the RF 800, bad autofocus in general which is noticable better on 100-500L and R8 etc,… So as much you might „recommend“ this lens for beginners in this stuff. I dont think so. Just look at 2nd hand portals and you will realize: 350$ for this 500 6.3, no stabilizer, no autofocus, or you look for 2nd hand 150-500 or even 150-600 which are stabilized (if not well, but they help!) and has a somewhat usable autofocus system, also not too great but a huge step forward! Those lenses cost between 400-600$ (older 150-500) and 500-700$ (150-600) 2nd hand. And you find a lot of them nowadays 2nd hand and for good prices since more or less people are starting the transition to mirrorless lenses. I am personally also seeking for the cheapest possible price and most/best features i can get for, and just the well known Sigma 150-600C or the Tamron G2 are SUPERIOR when it comes to performance/price ratio. Sure enough those 150-600s are heavy boys, unlike this „lightweight“ 500 6.3, but they give so much back for the weight you carried and the price you paid!

same here, haha. When i shoot portraits of not moving subjects with my manual and vintage 1.4s and 1.8s, i go in 30 fps electronic shutter burst mode, make a 1 second burst and slowly pull focus in both directions from the visually „correct focus“. Basically in over 80% of the times i really missed focus and with this spamming and short focus pull at least a few of the 30 shots burst are sharp where they should be. Also when going down with the shutter speed or the subject is a bit moving i spam as well.

Hi! Thansks for a great review. Do you think it could be suitable for simple lunar fotography? Perhaps combined with a Bathinov mask? Kind regards Lennart

I honestly don't know, probably yes. I have no idea what a Bathinov mask is though😀

This seams to be both an amazing value lens, and completely useless at the same time. If I had an a7RV, I could crank up the ISO to get a deeper depth of field and/or faster shutter. But if I could afford an a7RV, then a $350 lens isn't as appealing. I want to grab one to play with, but I don't think such a big and niche lens can make it to my bag.

@@marcoantonioriospena4875 This unstabilized, manual thing? Its super limited in usecases, its not only a prime, its also manual only and no stabilizer. Even a basic lens like a Canon RF 100-400 blows this thing away, for like 600$ new. But its super small and light, has incredible good stabilizer, not too bad autofocus. I dont see any place for this manual 500 6.3 in the modern world. If you guys want good looking 500mm at a budget with 6.3 or even faster…. just do yourself a favor and get a 500, 600 or 750mm F4 or F5 newtonian telescope. Like this you have at least any nice usecase for it, tho its many classes heavier and bigger.

You might be able to adapt a DSLR version, like Canon EF, for any mirrorless system.

If you're talking about reflex lenses, then yes, there are cheaper options but they're usually softer and you get the donut effect. If you're referring to T-mount options, then yes, there are also cheaper options but they are slower and also not as sharp (but sharper than reflex glass).

I doubt that it can deliver better images than the Canon FDn 300mm F4 L with FD-A extender I used till recently for video, with external viewfinder, for the same price or less, from Japan. Had to ditch it because I can not carry that much weight right now. Canon FD 300mm F4L, the best tool to film Birds? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-r2Rt6pWw9dQ.html
