I don't usually comment on RU-vid videos, but I appreciate this channel so much, and this episode to be specific. Nimeona that I can actually get a reliable clean car with less than 350,000, niache kutembea kama mifugo.
I agree with your list in theory. However the "reliable" piece only goes as far as the previous owner(s) have maintained the car. The challenge in Kenya is finding any car on that list under 350K that has been maintained and well kept. Too many are only fixed by a jua kali mech when they break, and then only told "just make it run as cheaply as possible" rather than "return it to good operating condition with original parts."
True. It makes buying locally used cars a gamble. One person will find a reliable one while another would find the source of all their pain in the newly acquired automobile.
I have driven a Vitara from someone who was hopeless at maintaining cars. It got stuck on a small hill just outside of Nyeri. It really depends on the owner
One correction about the AE100/101: The Levin was a Corolla and the Trueno was the sprinter. But you were right on longevity. I have a 1993 Trueno with a 4age 20v silvertop. Have had it for 20yrs and its bulletproof. Extremely reliable I have bought another car but decided not to sell the Trueno. Not only is it reliable, but those 20v engines are fun to drive so for me its a perfect spare car. Another thing I like is that its a manual which increases the fun factor and also the fact that manuals are not really being made much any more
My Dad owned a Suzuki vitara 1 gen 1600 cc for 15 years and all he changed were the tires, shocks and battery plus normal servicing. He's now crazy with Suzukis reliability.. He's in the 3rd gen now waiting for a better bigger Suzuki suv. Good job Erick with a Ck.
You are well versed with car knowledge..Good job Corrola sprinter ndio ilitulea kwetu bana..The abuse we took that car through,we even nicknamed it 'work horse' Only sold it early this year,Mzee aingie JDM baridi sasa inafika May from japan .
...as a car enthusiast and mechanic wa chini ya miti, who lived through the 80s and 90s era your list is spot on. But mimi ni wa 404, 504, 505. Any and all Toyotas of that era and back, the AE 110,AE 100 Corolla 90, AE80, KE,70, KE30, YN55, RN 35 and 25 Hilux pamoja na Nissan Sunny B12, B13 were among the best cars built to date. The only Mazda i cared for was the 323. Hizi za siku hizi ni mikebe.
Great insights as always Erick. I'm happy to see the 406 featured. I have seen a lot of misconceptions about these. They are super reliable, fast, comfortable, and have nice features ahead of their time. The trick is to use ex-Marshalls mechs and electricians. You don't want kawayas messing with the electricals. Also, use din batteries for all Peugeot models.
The Peugeot 406 won my pockets for a starter car. Erick, I'm coming your way soon. Start hunting for something good. You better have the "Authority to Sell" cert 😃
There are some older cars that I love. My biggest issue with them is the safety they lack, especially after seeing how much safety has evolved in modern vehicles. Feel like I can't live without ABS, stability control, multiple airbags and strong chassis that's able to take bigger impacts. Kenyan roads are nasty, imagine the biggest main artery that serves Kenya's interior and multiple countries from Msa to South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, etc... Is still one way! 😡
Yes in Europe and America one can comfortably buy an old car as people there keep cars clean and very well maintained. Hapa imechapa corrugation na kubeba mbuzi na ng'ombe
Hi my big bro Erick with a CK. great job as always big bro. my friend ali nunua toyota 100 and it's running great, Fantastic engine. Vitz iko powa saana but looks so small for tall guys, but gari safii sana. Unless ka ina weza kuwa modified. Maybe , you could have included Toyota Passo along side Vitz. Am taking about the one that is there before the new models, KB something. The passo looks small outside but ndani ni spacious, especially mbele. The only problem though is that ni kama haiendani na rough road saana. Hope one day, you will make a video of a video about small engines reliable cars, 1300cc and below Otherwise, keep up the good work
You've skipped some fantastic cars due to the "below 350k" limit. If you can do a series of those below 500k would be great so that we can get coverage of some cars such as the Toyota Starlet Glanza and others which are slightly above 350k and therefore not covered in this episode.
I have the AE91 and as the second user since she came to Kenya...I can confirm that its bullet proof only if the previous owner loved her...e.g I thank God my case was that the owner loved her
Hapo kwa Lancer I agree 100%. Own a 1996 Mitsubishi mirage (4G13 engine). Similar to its counter part Mitsubishi Lancer (with 4G15 engine hence 1500cc). The car still in grt shape, good power, good handling n extremely reliable.
Another reliable vehicle of this category is Toyota Platz, 1998-2002 models...below 350/-, fuel efficient, very spacious, durable, affordable spare parts, modern looks, stable, fast... Although most people see it as a "light" vehicle due to it's looks, it's a hardy car, I've owned one!!
Vipi Erick with a CK, awesome episode. How about caldinas. I think their styling is timeless. They still demand some presence. Their bodies are studdy hope the drivetrain is also as good as the car looks, I've seen some at that price range although they are not easy to come by just like most of this big boys u just mentioned.
My aunt's husband owns one.. KBC, they imported it from Japan l think around 2008 TO 2010 HAPO. NOT SURE. It's a reliable car, l tell you, haja wahi fungua engine, ni ku change tu miguu na kufanya service. Watu wengi wana mwendea awazie lakini hataki. Haha
Hello guys, have been a fun of carnversation and have learnt alot about cars. Before I could not engage with my friends when they were discussing something about cars but atleast now I can loudly argue and correct them. Countiue due the good job guys.
Your show is great you share very insightful message on machines. I love it. I feel very safe to choose and own a good vehicle at an affordable Prince. nani kama Eric. God bless you
Thank you for this. And thank you for educating me about volvo not being a money pit on the other episode. Question, is merc a money pit? Especially 1st gen G wagon
500k - 800k is the most sensible budget to buy a car, anything bellow that price range is just stretching yourself too much, you'd be better starting off a small business
Nah I have driven a car i bought for 250k, a locally assembled 2006 Lancer GLX,for 5 years now.It refuses to give up.Superb fuel economy too( 14-18km/l).Love it
@@Sto-x5d thanks for the insight bro.. nime ona KAX , KAY,s 1000cc for around 250k. But, is your's realible? And can you get a new engine for replacement incase the old one brings problems? About spacing, am talking about the frond space if the seats can be pushed back or get modified to accommodate tall guys 6.7 feet. The only kadudu l've tasted that am sure can be fit for a 6.7 feet is Toyota Passo KB something. The only setback is that it's not strong enough for lengthy useage of rough roads
The Vida that have really wanted thankyou for this I was looking forward to get a car...vitz has been my first dream car and yes I must have it soon in Jesus name
Amen Siz.. vitz is a great car, strong, easy to maintain. But for a 6.7 feet male like me, ita ni finya magoti unless ka ina weza kuwa modified. That's why kwa madudu, l prefer passo kb something, great space, but l don't know much about it, but kuna mtu ako nayo ali ni show, uki itumia saana kwa rough road, uta nunua racks and etc.. in short, haitaki rough road
Thanks Erick. First of all, you are nolonger local. You are international now, so we beg. Use English mostly, we don't understand that language you keep mixing with English. Second, you promised to talk about Mark X. What makes it cheap? Does it have many problems? Thanks from Sweden Stockholm
Thank you, we shall have it balanced perfectly for both the local and international market, your support and feedback is well appreciated plus we are hunting for the mark X soon
@@CARNVERSATIONS I agree that the 406 still looks stylish and is lovely to drive. There are friends who received PhDs in character development courtesy of the 406, so anyone planning to buy one should do a thorough pre-purchase inspection.
@@bandagalu 406 is sensitive when it comes to electricals. As Erick has mentioned, it was way ahead of its time. However, in terms of reliability, granted you haven't bought an abused 406, it's a very reliable car and has plenty of toys to play around with. The second-generation owners took them to roadside kawayas that messed the electricals. The engines are pretty powerful XU and EW and super reliable.
The 406 manual transmission is really good. It can take some punishment. The autos from that era were not great. Get a Peugeot 406 D9 with either EW (7 or 10) or HDI engine (very rare but great power and consumption. Bulletproof engine).
Hello.. Please for the Peugeot 406.. Which is best variant.. The petrol or diesel variant.. Does it have unreliability issues like other diesel models in other categories..
Diesel are great. Consumption and power is on another level. I would go for the D9. You get Auto lights and wipers, facelift, improved dash(the D8 has a habit of peeling the passage airbag)
