It is very helpful to have you review tools with budget in mind. But I’ve noticed you thoughtfully tend to consider costs in your videos. So often, experienced weavers forget that not everyone has a stash of tools they’ve accumulated over a lot of years or the money to buy ‘a must have’ tool. It gives newbies a glimmer of hope for starting out. And, heavens, I started out as a sewist and I’ve never spent $150 on shears for sewing. I will plead guilty to spending that on dog grooming shears though 😂

I can't help but consider costs, I think it's just ingrained in me from living frugally my entire adult life. When I started weaving, we were "poor" and just to buy the loom was such a huge expense, I felt guilty about it. My husband insisted that I purchase the loom, I told him I was going to make it pay one way or another. I had no idea! 😀

I have purchased several beautiful, handmade boat shuttles at a VERY reasonable price from a lady who makes them on Etsy! Much less than $60 USD, actually! They are beautiful and she even makes one with s lower profile specifically for rigid heddle's smaller shed!

My son bought me a weaving temple for xmas. It's a luxury, but as I am mainly weaving yardage for making clothing, I adore the painless straight selvedges when weaving full width.

Good video, Kelly! I don't know how available they are worldwide, but I love my Gingher Dress Shears. About $30 US, but the best part is you can send them into the US shop and they will sharpen them and return them for a reasonable price. Somehow mine got a "tic" in them and they came back like new. I quilt, too, and I save these for cutting weaving and precise fabric cutting.

Thank you for sharing your tools. I'm A newbie to weaving and I found that using different size paint brush stirrers as pick up sticks work really and much cheaper.

Being highly budget conscience, could you make a set of pick-up sticks and stick shuttles by modifying yard sticks or paint sticks? They would be needed to be rounded and sanded, but seem to be a similar width and thickness. One thing my grandfather (who grew up during the depression) taught me years ago was to always start with the most budget tool that would get the job done safely, and then only upgrade it when it breaks or otherwise turns out to not work for what you need it to do. What this does is to prevent you from spending a lot money on things that are rarely used, and only investing on the tools that get a lot of use after you know what you really need from them. I still have a lot of very inexpensive tools that are serving me 30+ years later, with a handful of higher end ones.

Your grandfather was a clever man 😊 Yes, absolutely use what you have on hand, I fully advocate for that!
