As a First Nations person, Sergeant Shona Davis was relieved that she could be open about her culture in the Australian Federal Police (AFP). She found the AFP to be very understanding and aware of the challenges and barriers when leaving her community or culture, moving to a new city and a big organisation.
Shona mentors females as well as First Nations people through the AFP Directions Program. She believes that being a good communicator, having empathy and understanding are more important than the physical attributes of being a police officer. Shona believes females can excel at anything in the AFP.
Being a member of the AFP provided Shona with job stability as a mum of two. It allowed her to remain away from the workplace to raise her children and then to return part-time in a role that helped her manage her family commitments.
