Holy cow! Is it just me or is 2020 Scott way more comfortable in front of the camera!? I'm not sure why but this video just sent it home that this dude is a full tilt professional. I've been a fan for awhile now but the quality seems to have taken a jump in the new year. * Banner Cheat: Draw the image in an image editor (Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator works great), print the image, then use that as an underpainting (painting over the printed banner so that it doesn't look like it was printed). This also works for decals, which will always look like decals unless they're overpainted. * For organic shapes, Silly Putty works great as a mask. * For most freehand, a very dark underpainting works well for separating the device from the ground. (Paint in the dark color first, then leave just the edge of that as a darkline around the piece. * If you're doing a pattern (knotwork border, for instance), practice it on paper first so that you know how it works and so that you can center it where you want it easier. Really nice mudfish, btw.

Third time lucky? For some reason I’m having trouble posting comments on RU-vid at the moment. Hot tip! When masking, spray a varnish coat over the mask before painting. The varnish will help seal the mask to the surface and reduce paint bleed.
@mikepeters8132
@mikepeters8132 4 года назад
an alternate, but essentially same technique, is to use the base coat colour instead of varnish. bothe options give different properties to the basked off shape.
@matthewhipkin3962
@matthewhipkin3962 4 года назад
Agreed this would work just as well over a single colour. However, if applying vehicle markings, nose art etc over a camouflage scheme for example this could be challenging.

I've only done a little bit of freehand, I just do a super rough sketch of the silhouette of what I want in pencil. You're going to cover it anyway and it really helps with staying inside the boundaries. Pencil might not go on very well on every paint, but it's not failed me so far.

@@atticusgaming96 size 1 has enough body to cover panels, and the tip is fine enough to get 99% of the details you're looking to hit. I like tiny brushes a lot, so i also have a size 0 on hand... but i still gravitate to the size 1 for most of the brush painting i do despite thinking i prefer the smaller brush. I also have a size 2... but that thing is too much of a chonker for me and is probably better suited for the work i start using an airbrush for. Just make sure you are getting sable hair brushes from Raphael if you are looking for the same things as I am. Tip for painting over masks: Paint a layer of the color that is already on the mini first. It will bleed into potential gaps under the tape, making the next layer over the mask only follow the actual mask.

Instead of masking tape I use vinyl foils for desktop cutting machines like the ones from Silhouette. After you applied them you can heat them carefully with an hairdryer, so the color cannot run underneath. Works like a charm. I also use vinyl masking tapes from 3M for masking non-flat surfaces and curves, same procedure here.

You can improve your freehanding, or painting as we call it, by doodling & drawing as much as possible. Get a sketch book & start as simple as possible, i.e. the 3 basic shapes (circle, triangle & square, no rulers allowed, no corrections allowed). If you're good at that, start doing the 3D version (spheres, cones & cubes). With those 3 you can draw / freehand everything. Watch professional artists always start with the basic shapes - there's a reason for that.

One trick I use, mostly when I have several minis like a game unit, rather than a display piece, is to look through my stash of dollar-store confetti or similar. The bits are usually thick paper or sometimes thin metal and come in a variety of shapes - stars, moons, circles, hearts diamond etc - and stick these onto shields or breastplates or flags to paint over. I guess this is a way of avoiding freehand but it can help to get the job done.

The freehanding should also be shaded with the curves of the material. On that fan it was fairly flat, so not that big a deal. Not the case on other stuff. Also natural shapes can be pleasant to do because nature is messy. A basic trim of holly leafs on the edge of a tunic took all of 10 minutes, and made an otherwise boring holiday figure go from kinda blah to super cute. So what if a leaf isn't perfect - leafs aren't! Or fabric that has some spiderweb pattern? Hey, spiderwebs are messy. Get the main idea of it across in one area, then keep connecting lines as webs. Most ambitious I've done is an entire cloak on a 30mm scale figure to look like it was made out of peacock feathers. Each feather was painted individually. Took almost 20hrs.... but actually was pretty easy once I figured out how to craft each feather. Just a series of lines and dots. SO MANY LINES AND DOTS.

Pro-tip for masking on textured surface: After getting it as tight as possible, spray one coat of the base color you've already covered. That will fill the gaps so that when you spray the color it can't flow into the gaps. This works when painting walls as well.

Don't be afraid to use a pencil to kinda give you some guidelines and just how big you'll need to paint something. It also helps those that might get tunnel vision when painting to keep them from painting something to small or to big. Or like me when I first did this paint something with odd proportions.

What Ink's do you use? TY for the video as well, I am going to try some free hand now.

Coming back to this video, do you have any recommendations in regards to brushes to use for free-handing things like lettering?

Definitely going to have to watch this video and several other videos to learn how to freehand because the Guardians of the Covenant I want to paint have illuminated high gothic scripts all over their banners, armor, flanks of their vehicles.
