my hand surgery went great and this video helped. here are important points: - What does Anethesia feel like? Nothing! Its like you ain't even there. Don't remember going under at all. Next thing I know I am in recovery just chilling! I was terrified but it was SO easy! - Want to skip surgery? General Anethesia is your ticket! Skips you to the end.

Depends how old you are. If you are older, your intellectual abilities might suffer. In this case a peridural anaesthesia might be better - if it is possible.

I binged Dr. Kaveh’s videos to manage my major fear of gallbladder surgery and I can honestly say they all helped me so much! Thank you, Dr. Kaveh for your amazing channel! P.s. Surgery went exceptionally well yesterday and loved my anesthesiologist and surgeon because I knew what to ask and do beforehand. One thing I should not have done: I waited too long to schedule my surgery and in those 2 months, my anxiety built up…should have scheduled in within a couple of weeks to avoid all that unnecessary anxiety.

I am delaying my surgery for last one and half year although I am in too much pain. I am scared because I am morbidly obese (BMI 45) and my anesthesiologist has also said general anesthesia for me is riskier than what it would have been for healthy people although still safe

I've been putting off my top surgery [basically a mastectomy] for about a year or so due to my fear of anesthesia & post-op pain... I'd finally decided to schedule it for June 3rd a couple months ago. Last week, my surgeon decided to move me up to April 29th. While part of me is anxious, I'M SO EXCITEDDDDDD!! I think now that it feels like I don't have enough time to ruminate because I have to get all my supplies, plan the trip, & get the expenses in order... I'm focusing less on the "what if's"? I definitely can't say that would be the case for everyone, but it's definitely working for me!! Also, I filled out an Advanced Directive & talked to my partner/therapist about my anxiety, so... I'll have some listening ears & reality checks if the fear sneaks back up on me. ☺️

@@AA-cy9ibThat sucks a lot & I'm so sorry to hear that. I did some reading that ANY lifestyle improvement [if that is possible] will improve your recovery! I'm disabled, but I started using a seated elliptical a few times a week to improve my circulation. Even tho my BMI is bordering on 40, I'm hoping that the steps I'm taking for my health will be enough. And I hope the same for you, too!! ❤️‍🩹

I have very strong ‘I’ curiosity but it’s sprinkled with a bit of ‘D’ curiosity as a result of surgical ptsd. I have always been curious about the world around me and was so full of questions about everything as a child, I drove the people around me, crazy. It’s likely why I am a grade 5 teacher. However, post some very horrendous surgical experiences, I now NEED to know everything that’s going to happen or my anxiety is through the roof. I watch every video showing my surgery that I can find on RU-vid so that I can feel like I can have some control. I agree 100% with you that knowledge is power. Is there such thing as too much knowledge? My husband thinks I’m just scaring myself even more.

Hey Doc Kaveh, I really appreciate your insight on this. I recently underwent surgery and fear of losing control was my number one concern. I had done all this planning for "the moment" I would be injected with propofol and what that would feel like and that moment never came. I remember being transferred to the operating table and then hearing the voice of my nurse. I cried when I woke up but overall I am recovering well. My anesthesiologist told me in his experience it's always the smart ones who fear losing control under the medication. The entire medical staff was great and helped me stay calm through the whole process. Ultimately I am proud of myself for not allowing panic to take over.

I didn't get a full on surgery today but I went for a routine endoscopy with a different doctor. Before the procedure I was able to communicate with the nurse on my fears of having my throat paralyzed. It was uncomfortable, but I felt supported by the nurse and she helped me to breathe. A LOT BETTER than the panic attack inducing atmosphere I experience twice before. Also my previous doctor apparently misdiagnosed me with having Barrett's Esophagus when the doctor I saw today says I don't have that? He also told me to stop taking the vonoprazan fumarate ( I live in Japan) I had been prescribed because it was damaging my stomach. I'm really confused as to how something so serious like BE can be misdiagnosed, although I am more inclined to listen to this new doctor since he and his staff were very supportive of me.

They always have me in the pre-op room (I guess it's called?), and the anesthesiologist puts the 'knock out drug' in my IV. Knocks me out there. Had 2 surgeries, never saw the OR yet. Could you request that?

I use a full mask for CPAP and go diving a couple of times a year. When I required laser lithotripsy, the mask felt like it was suffocating me. The surgical nurse immediately recognized the problem and lifted the mask off my face by a quarter inch (or so). This allowed me to relax while still getting the gas. I saw this nurse a couple of days later (follow up appt) and thanked her. She seemed genuinely grateful for the feedback.

I found this to be a very informative video. I have had 5 terrible experiences with sedatives. the worst was during a wrist operation. I made it perfectly clear to the hand surgeon that I did not want the surgery if i had to be sedated. On the day of surgery they put in an IV , and then the anesthesiologist tried 3 times to do a brachial plexus nerve block but all 3 failed. In the operating room, the surgeon had the nurse inject versed and fentanyl. I woke up mid operation and had a panic attack . I was given more drugs and passed out again just before seeing my pulse drop from 140 to 40. after the operation I lost 75% use of my thumb even though the operation was not on that side of my had (It was on ulnar nerve) After 21 years, I still wake up 1-4 times a month and have flashbacks about being forced into procedures against my will. the fentanyl had little if any impact on the pain 1. would general anesthetic cause a better or worse reaction to someone with paradoxical reactions? 2. any explanation why a nerve block wouldn't work? 3. I will never have elective surgery again any suggestions if my cardiologist says I need stents or bypass at some point. again thank you so much for your videos

I don't have any fear of anesthesia. In fact there's about 3 seconds as I'm going under that's one of the greatest highs I've ever experienced... wheeee (child of the 60's). My only fear is simply not coming back from unconsciousness, ie, death. Also, a tranquilizing shot about a half hour before going under is helpful.

I had fear of my heart valve surgery. I had two concepts that gave me ease. The first was i only had Two outcomes, life with God or life with my husband. The second was told to me by the surgeon. He said I will have a good out come because I had a sense of humor and I liked the music that was playing in the OR. I have watched many of your episodes. You provide so much knowledge and in my case, I think, some ignorance allowed me not to a have hang up on every detail. I did have disappointment at home healing than during my hospital stay.

Just found your channel thank you so much . I’ve had general anaesthetic 3 times I’m in the Uk Manchester. The first time for an adrenal gland removal key hole surgery, don’t remember much about that , second 2021 emergency eye surgery for a detached retina. The anaesthesiologist was extremely rude , told me too just stop crying or she would put me back on the ward . Anyway the recovery was worse , won’t go into too much but once I came home I broke down , couldn’t communicate much so had too put in a complaint, got a good response but I definitely have trauma from that experience. The 3rd was just last week, very different experience , the anaesthesiologist was fantastic. Great man I cried again I was a mess , stood at the surgery door saying I can’t do it , he just looked at me and said come on Natalie you can do this . Anyway I remember saying I’m not asleep then I woke up with the mask on and was told my throat will be sore as they took the tube out ? I was scared why that happened? Also I shake after general anaesthetic ( not cold just shake all over) uncomfortable but they help me through it . I won’t lie , I find it very overwhelming, scary because I can’t understand how it all happens? Although one thing that helped is my daughter saying, if there’s one person you can trust during all this it’s the anaesthesiologist. Correct 👍 I’ve become so interested now in how it all works .

Many of your videos have been helpful, but THIS one in particular! These tips can help in general daily life, too - not just for surgery. I'll probably get 1 or 2 knee surgeries (TKR) next year. As single woman in late 60's, had general anesthesia for broken nose, sinus issues after being attacked at age 19. I remember conversations between 2 doctors, medical people, & pain during surgery (again many years ago), which I told them once 'awake'. Possibly worse, was they brushed it off, didn't believe me, said it couldn't have happened. I have much more confidence now in the 'system' & know many things have changed since then. Was grateful to have conversation recently about this with perfusionist who is casual friend. THANK YOU.

Thanks for this. I am having a spinal fusion in 2 months. I already know I will be in pain when I wake up and possibly a lot of pain. I have had general anaesthesia 5 times before. The last two times they controlled the nausea. The first ones were hard. I projectile vomited all over everyone. This surgery is so much more challenging than all the others I have had. I appreciate knowing some ways to prep ahead of time for the anaesthesia as the surgery itself is anxiety producing. Being calm through the anaesthesia, going under and coming out is going to be important.

I'm worried on what I'd be like under anesthesia now because the last time I was under anesthesia was to take out my 7 wisdom teeth in high school. I remember wanting desperately not to have to do it for fear of what I might say under the influence and there was also my extreme needle phobia that I kept hidden after being held down by 4 adults as a kindergartener. The last thing I remember before being knocked out is me not being able to control my panic, finally bursting into tears, verbally stammering that I was afraid of needles, and then watching my stoic mother then start crying in response. When I woke up in recovery, I just remembered being pissed off. I refused to talk to anyone. When we left, I climbed into the back of the van to get as far away from my mother as possible. Even with the pain meds, I was just as grumpy and non-verbal as ever. Perhaps what I should do before my next anesthesia is an early apology to those around me.
@Grynn17
@Grynn17 Год назад
I had surgery about 2 1/2 weeks ago. What was discussed in my anesthesiologist call (which was a different doc than who did the actual anesthesia) was very different than what actually happened. I was told I would have heavier anesthesia than the surgery I had a year before, probably with an LMA and possibly a nerve block. No mention of “if” it was decided a tube was the better choice, what I could expect when I woke up. And that’s what happened - I woke up feeling like I was choking on something, and my throat hurt worse than the surgical site for almost a week. I was also nauseous (no nausea last year). And I was given something that removed my memories, although I was told I was conscious when I got to the O.R. The last thing I remember is starting to be wheeled out of the pre-op area. This also bothers me. Now my trust in the process and information I was given is pretty much destroyed. Guess I’ll find out how bad if I ever need another surgery.

The other is abdominal surgery which will be open not laparoscopic. They will both be general. I have never had any problems and I have had at least 12 surgeries plus at least 10 endoscopies. My story almost exactly! After too many invasive procedures with inadequate or no deep sedation/ anesthesia, I now have medical trauma ( PTSD) and will not undergo any invasive procedures without propofol or equivalent. I perseverate and lose sleep thinking about past painful interventions and future possibilities. All of this has been exponentially aggravated since the so called opioid/ opiate crisis leading the entire medical establishment to tend to shy away from drugs that will actually alleviate patient pain almost entirely, and even rewrite medical texts and journals to cheerlead the trend towards OTC meds for post surgical pain!?! I think above all else, as Dr Kaveh said, if your anesthetist is empathetic, kind, caring and understanding of your concerns and in general makes you feel calm and relaxed, you will be fine. No matter what the surgery is. Yes there are certain surgeries like cardiothoracic and neurosurgery that will still make you feel frightened and scared (I should know, at least with neurosurgery that is), but like I said, if your anesthetist is empathetic, kind, caring and understanding of your concerns and in general makes you feel calm and relaxed, that's half the battle right there.

I recently had cataract surgery which is the first time I ever went under general anesthesia. I had the option to either be under a local anesthetic or be completely under.... I chose to be completely under. Methods like listening to Bible study, saying prayers,and breathing techniques worked for me. So, I went into the operating room with not much fear or anxiety at all. Of course, the anesthesiologist spoke to me beforehand, they prepared me and the next thing I know, I'm ready for surgery. So, what did general anesthesia feel like? Well, it was like I went to La La land... And immediately upon waking up, it was over. I didn't see or feel anything....... And I have no recollection of what they were doing. Also, having a positive attitude, lots of hugs and the support from family and friends can help as well. Some people even bring a stuffed animal with them... But of course, do what suits you best.😅

I’m curious Dr Kaveh, what can you do for patients who are actively having a panic attack on the operating table? Would you try to calm them down first (if so how) or would you proceed to give drugs/induce anesthesia (to alleviate their “suffering”)?

I have both fears - one of not waking up after the procedure and the other of waking up during the procedure. It takes a lot of anesthesia to put and keep me under. I am a redhead - and I try to subtly or even outright ask them to please consider that when dosing me. Out of the few minor surgeries have had - only one was successful for me. I woke up when I was supposed to and I stay asleep when I was supposed to. I woke up two times when they were actively working on me. Once screaming in pain because it was after they shocked my heart for a cardio version procedure. The other was during the actual cardio ablation. I was trying to let them know I was in pain because I could feel them in my chest. But the doctor actually said I couldn’t feel anything - it wasn’t real pain before I slipped back to sleep. 😢

My fear is that I have no control over what’s done to me. Plus I have weird dreams while having surgery. Had an endoscopy before my bariatric surgery. They put something in my mouth before I was under. Had all kinds of weird dreams about them doing different things to me. Will be going in for a colonoscopy in December. Can’t wait for what I dream about then. More afraid of waking up missing things. Because I don’t like being touched in those areas unless I know you very well.

Question for you. How good are anesthesiologists at recognizing and saving you from anaphylaxis during and after surgery? I warn them, and I bring a list of drugs I have had or might have adverse reactions to, but as you say, once I give up control, I have to trust them. Can I trust them? There are lots of drugs in your drawer that I should not be given.

I am not scared... I am TERRIFIED of it. I have already exit a wisdom teeth removal surgery with a panic attack and couldn't do it... I still have my wisdom teeth because I was unable to overcome the fear. And now, I have been scheduled for a shoulder surgery because I got acromioclavicular osteoarthritis and am unable to continue training in the gym unless I fix it through surgery. But I am thinking about calling and cancelling it because I know the same thing will happen as with my wisdom teeth, I will go to the appointment just to run away in a panic attack and make everyone lose their time. And I think it is connected to my fear of death. I fear the experience of losing consciousness without being able to do anything about it... I think I fear going under general anesthesia so much because for me it is the closest feeling to when you die and you fall into darkness without anything you can do about it... And the more information I look about it ''to ease my anxiety'' (which is how I landed on this video...), the more terrified I become. I was scared first about the experience of losing consciousness while being aware of it about to happen or happening... like my heart would be beating so hard that I'm afraid my panic attack alone may trigger a complication with the anesthesia. Then by researching, I learn that as soon as you lose consciousness, your lungs also stop being able to breath on their own and you depend on how quick they can put a tube connected to a machine to have you ''breathing''. That alone triggered a panic attack.

I might need surgery soon under GA. I've had GA before, and it went well, but not since my health got worse (severe asthma). Over the last few years, I've developed an irrational fear of dying. Therefore, I now fear I'm going to go to sleep and not wake up after surgery. It's terrifying, I know that is a risk with anaesthesia even tho it's a small one, but I'm still very scared it will happen. The surgery should help me get out of almost daily pain I suffer with, but this fear is putting me off big time and I dont know how to get over it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

After having had several major back surgeries (3 were over 10 hours long, 1 was 15 hours) I have extreme anxiety regarding surgery. I spent 10 years off the medical merry-go-round and healing myself. I weaned myself off of 3 different opiates and several other pain related meds during those 10 years. I have been pharma free for 8 years until a recent diagnosis of triple negative bc. Now, I'm having a mastectomy this coming Friday (4 days from today) and I have already had a panic attack for the first time in my life, and my bp is so high, I have to take 2 separate bp meds just preparing for this surgery. I have been using meditation for 2 years and I know how to get to the void, but it still scares the crap out of me because of past complications. I have been watching your videos since 3am, and I just wanted to say a big "Thank You" for posting them. I have an appointment to speak with the surgeon on Wednesday, and I will ask my questions and see if I am able to use my breathing technique and meditation before anything is put in me or on me. I don't want to offend anyone on my surgery team, but I really do have trust issues with the medical establishment. And I was a nurse for 20 years before I injured my back and got on the medical merry-go-round. I've had msra twice in my spinal canal. I have woke up with blisters from my forehead to my toes from laying on the table for 15 hours. My last major surgery resulted in a 3 month hospital stay. To say I have concerns and anxiety regarding this upcoming surgery is putting it mildly. Thank you for shedding some light, and making me feel better about taking back some control. 🙏

What do you recommend in foods or supplements in the days after surgery? To recover fast and hold the chemical painkillers to a minimum? I remember the side effects of morphine after my previous surgery as worse than the pain I had (I felt like they gave me morphine too easily). And how do you work if a patient has glasses and their eyes are too bad to just take them off in the room? For me with the masking thing it helps if the assistant tells me exactly what they are doing while doing it. The anesthesia is the least scary to me, it's the waking up part.
@MedicalSecrets
@MedicalSecrets Год назад
Great questions, I actually talk about them in other videos. Briefly, you want to make sure you get enough protein, magnesium, zinc, and vitamin d and c intake after surgery to promote optimal wound healing. Remember that the faster your wound heal, the less pain you'll have. If you have glasses, I recommend you hold on to them until you are ready to let them go. The last thing you want is to feel like you are not able to see what's going on in a stressful environment

But I am fearful of potential anaphylaxis, prolonged hypotension and cognitive sequellae, random cardiac arrest or something, aspiration. Dr. Kaveh: This video was useless. Why would I "thank" people for doing their job?...it's their job. Choice is a myth; no one would have surgery if it was a true choice. Patients are coerced into surgery by threats of consequences; the implicit threat is, have this procedure or something bad will happen, how is that a choice?Like, hand over your wallet or I will kill you...not really a choice. Furthermore, all that "kumbaya" nonsense about breathing and music is ridiculous, for one thing it only works on people who are not scared in the first place. Modern medicine assaults patients with equipment, techno-babble, chemicals and bodily invasion; then after scaring the hell out of people and assaulting them, they want to be thanked. I have postponed my surgery twice and your video has made it likely I will never schedule it. Yes, their will be consequences but those consequences are somewhat preferential to walking into a room filled with strangers and giving them permission to physically assault me and then expecting me to thank them. Not happening. One thing good about this video, it helped me make up my mind to not put myself at the mercy of egocentric, sadistic jerks! i don't trust anyone who has "MD" after their name.
