Africa Milk Run: Flying 46 Years Old DC-9 and an MD-80 in the Cockpit

Back in 2014, I took a really interesting trip to Africa; I am so glad I was able pull off this one: a 4-stop milk run from Dubai to Nairobi via Somalia, onboard African Express. All the take-offs and landings are shot from the cockpit, with some of the best airmen manually flying the plane in unbelievable tough situations.
We flew from Dubai via Berbera and Mogadishu, Somalia, on an ex-Alitalia MD-82; then we swap planes in Mogadishu and travel onward to Wajir and Nairobi in Kenya on an African Express 46 years old DC-9-30.
Flying into Somalia was an eye opener, we landed on the extreme bumpy runway in Berbera; this runway was once used by NASA as a Space Shuttle emergency landing strip. In Mogadishu the tough security situation forced our plane to land from the sea at the expense of 14 knots of tailwind, to avoid anti-aircraft gun fire on final approach. Then an extra stop in Wajir, northern Kenya to clear immigration and customs; this is a stop that must be made before any Somali arrivals are allowed into Nairobi, Kenya. A trip like this was exhilarating, but infinitely rewarding!

Serving food in an airline from a local restaurant! Man that’s real hospitality!! In this day and age most renowned airlines try to maximise profits by going “ultra low cost”, and there’s an airline in Africa flying 50 year old aircrafts but still trying to appease the flyers by providing meals in every leg of the flight!! Wow. African Express has my respect ✊

Hi Sam, loved your video. Brings back great memories of flying around Africa in the early '90s, particularly when I used to fly from Dubai to Galkayo in Somalia (via Ryan in Yemen), on these old stolen Russian Ilyushin Il-18s. Full Russian Crew, no spoken English, Drop Toilets and the only passenger (x6 seats). The plane was full of cargo, Toyota parts in bound and frozen goats outbound, with the cabin odour of the outbound flight being a little unpleasant after about 4 hours into the 6 hour flight. The sights and smells of Africa, unforgettable!

Your photos from the aft of the aircraft while sitting just in front of the engine mouth reminded me of a story from the distant past. A Hughes Air West DC-9 was descending into Phoenix. The front lavatory dump valve had a slow leak and during the flight at altitude a big blob of blue lavatory fluid froze into a large chunk of ice. As the aircraft entered its descent into warmer air at lower altitudes the blob detached from the valve and flew directly backwards through the right rear engine causing quite a commotion as the engine exploded and shut down. The aircraft continued to an emergency landing at its destination, Phoenix. Later, the passenger sitting right next to the engine was interviewed as to his thoughts when the engine exploded. The passenger told the interviewer that he had just ordered a drink. The interviewer asked what did you do next. The passenger replied, “I ordered another drink 🍹!”

All things considered the MD-82 looks very decent. It even has a full fledged autopilot with autoland capability (if you look carefully when the captain showcases the instrument panel... I think CAT IIIA at least?). And the DC-9-32 looks ultra clean too. But these guys have their own maintenance facility and sure make full use of it. There must be said something about those guys flying the DC-9 completely by hand... outstanding. All in all a very entertaining video. Keep up the good work Sam!

Great vid. Back in the days when I did a lot of business travel, I used to do short hop flights from London via Vienna into Eastern Europe (sofia, bucharest etc) This was back in the 90's and for such flights it would be one of those twin prop engined planes. The pilot door would be swinging open and close and you could catch a view of the pilot grappling with the controls and the plane swaying from side to side. I actually loved those flights as it felt more engaging than the normal flights out of London. You enjoy the flying experience much better. Also did one such bumpy flight from Stockholm to a very frozen Reykjavík. I loved a bumpy flight for some odd reason.

DC-9 was the first jet plane I rode, back in late 1970's when I was about 5 year old. I went from Surabaya to Jakarta, Indonesia with my mum and dad.

Hi Sam, I have just recently started to follow your bloggs , being and aviation guy myself for over 50 years, I was very interested in the milk run flight you did in Africa, Somalia. I to was a cabin crew member fir an American Airline and took UN soldiers there from India, Pbilippines and also did the same for Bosinia. What you had daid in our video, I lived it as a flying crew member. It brought back many memories even though they were scary at times. We were not called the milk run though, more like the war run. Yes, it was a very serious time, what with the black hawk incident we just landed empty to pick up the soldiers and take them back to India and bring in replacements. Im a way it was an expetience never tio be forgotten. Keep up the good work and will be following you more ad I am retired and have the time. Take care and others always during this very trying time which I am confident will bloe over. Thanks, Robert

Hi Sam, would highly advice you to travel to the capital of Somaliland, Hargeisa. Great city and there are a variety of Airlines which travel there via Dubai (FlyDubai A320) and Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines B737). If you do decide to come we will be honoured and grateful to welcome you.

So what about that Master Caution button? Why was it on every 2 minutes? Their muscle memory of just dismissing it every 2 minutes or so seems like a perfect recipe for the beginning of a disaster!

Now THAT was a good one. Not watching old Sam lolling in superluxurious first class smooching with a usually beautiful female cabin crew member or three. A hands-on, professional presentation of remote places. I practically smelled the airplane interiors. Hats off to the pilots, too.

"Looks like Alitalia invested a lot of money on the MD" Indeed Sam, my father used to fly AZ dc's until late 1980's and md's until 2010, they were running a tight maintenance schedule and continuosly upgraded, efis was the major upgrade in 1994 It's nice to see survivors in Africa and Bulgaria www.azfleet.info/aerei/mcdonnell-douglas-md82/i-dawq

That’s part of the problem Sam, some pilots have forgotten how to manually fly the airplane. They turn on the autopilot 200 feet above the ground and click it off on short final. The Air France Airbus aircraft that was lost and the Amazon freighter at Houston are perfect examples of puss poor flying by the pilot.

DC-9 was my first flight ever in flight attendant training. Then the DC-8 followed by the L-1011 TriStar, which was my baby. Loved the wide-body aircraft. Best plane ever. Have you considered doing “tours” and videos of retired aircraft that sit grounded? a/k/a graveyard. Many popular planes are resting there. Would be great to go back in time and rehash the history of commercial aviation Worldwide.

That is so cool that a RU-vid personality Sam Chui can start a channel, grow it from the ground up, make it profitable, and then have the bonified cred to be invited into the cockpit. I hear people complain about the internet and how much crap there is to wade through, but imo there are a lot more benefits than there are liabilities. It is so worth wading through the crap to be able to find jewels like this channel that give us viewers AWESOME content for FREE. When I was 10 in 1985, I would have never imagined a world where I could find so much good quality documentary content for nothing more than the price of an internet connection.

Quite Cool. At least no Demakuffu in the flight deck 🤣🤣. We Africans also like Classics. A 46 year old relic is young enough not to be President in Kenya, leave alone retiring an aircraft at that age. It's amazing seeing one of your videos from my country Kenya.
