Many native langueges are present in africa and are very widely spoken. These foreign languages are used in official terms around the capital cities and other popular cities. Whenever you hear % of this nation are illitirate it means that % of ppl in this nation don't speak or write in the official language of the nation which is most of the time a foreign language

More often the ones who cannot read or write very well in at least one language. But yeah some countries count only official language reading or writing skills, which is easier to test

Language is not the word we understand it to be when we refer to the African continent, tribal chatter and the sheer quantity of recognised languages is incomprehensible and I think the idea to standardise remains a valid goal.

How Ethiopia can be described as never having been colonised is beyond me. It formed the most substantial portion of Italian East Africa
@michaelyeshiwas4855
@michaelyeshiwas4855 2 года назад
It is because the Italian rule was only limited to the large urban center and the battle didn't stop for the whole length of the 5 years. Not to mention that the battle ended in their favor. It is the same scenario as France in WW2. Although it was occupied by the Germans, we don't call it colonization due to the ongoing war.

I am South African and Sesotho is my home language . In SA we have 11 official languages , 9 of them are native African languages which are Sesotho, venda, sepedi , xhosa, tsonga, tswana, zulu, ndebele and swati. All 11 official languages are equal. Any of these languages can be used anywhere even in parliament. At home and in public native languages are dominating and english dominates in advertising.

Ethiopia was not colonised because i'ts capital was inland unlike the somali and afar empired around it that were coastal. That gave ethiopia a chance to regroup and take down the colonisers while others were taken by surprise. Ethiopa also benefited from colonisation as it expanded it's empire and since colonisers were not aware of any other sovereign land other than ethiopia so all the uncolonised parts were recognised as ethiopia despite ethiopia never being there. Gode is a great example of a place that was apart of ethiopia that ethiopia didn't have power in. It got ahold of that town/city only in 2006 as ethiopia was heading to give foreign aid to somalia.

Ethiopia wasn't colonized because it was Christian and had no resources like diamonds to attract the major powers. Italy, late in the game and infamously militarily incompetent was hungry for prestige and ill suited to obtain it. Hence the invasion and disaster. Also hence the lack of invasions from other powers.
