After a year of suspense, the 2016 Africa Twin is finally here! Well, it's in South Africa anyway, which is where we went to put Honda's new ADV bike through its paces. Thirteen years after the original model went out of production, Honda has resurrected the legendary Africa Twin name and slapped it on the side of a big-wheeled, 1000cc machine that looks like it belongs in a desert race. But how does it work? Watch the video to find out.

MrSilus2000 I'd like to think I'd do some off roading if I had one, but realistically I would not. I think the 21" front /18" rear tire setup would be too compromised for on road. I am also not too keen on the tubed tires. I haven't ridden one and won't get to for a while. I will be working at a motorcycle dealer, so when they are available I'll try to get some seat time.

I myself don't care for shaft drive on such bikes, although BMW does shaft pretty well. It's still heavy, and quite messy when the seals give out, negating the prior cleanliness. As for the Honda AT, I do hope Honda offers it with the TC & ABS but with a regular manual transmission.

DCT takes time to get used to but once you do... I have a 2010 VFR 1200FD and after learning how to use it right I would have a hard time going back to manual. One big tip DONT use the S or D modes, D can come in handy in very heavy rain when you want to tone it down some but otherwise I just use the "manual" mode and paddle shift. Only drawback is lack of clutch so for slow speed it is all about throttle control. I wish people who do reviews of DCT bikes actually had some experience with them, otherwise they always complain about it since they dont know how to use it right.

No 2 Cylinder V Engine -was the heart of the africa twin!
@BestRex
@BestRex 8 лет назад
+MrStarlight1980, parallel-twins is even better. It has pretty much the same character as a V-twin, but it's MUCH smarter from the engineering point of view (less parts = more power, more reliability, less friction, less weight), better weight distribution and MUCH better mass centralization (giving better handling of the bike), and lower vibrations (if you do them right). So, parallel twins combines the pros of V-twins and inline engines without having cons of any of them.

Nice. Question for these bikes is durability. With the exception of tire changes and the occasional missing chain link, can the dual clutch take the rider on a 35,000 kilometer journey at a stretch without major components failing in the midst of nowhere? Note that the current Dakar winning bikes are 450cc not 1000cc plus 500 pounders...
@BestRex
@BestRex 8 лет назад
+planetmikeus, Honda DCT are well-proven to be very reliable and problem-free. 35 000 km journey? Pff, it'll take you on the 100 000+ km journey without any issues. In fact, Honda DCT are proved themselves to be even MORE reliable than the conventional gearboxes, since the most of the (conventional) gearboxes issues are caused by the improper use of the gearbox by rider. And DCT are, obviously, much more fool-proof than the conventional gearboxes.

I just turned 50 and have left my YZ to my young son and put my MX track days on a shelf. I ride both street and dirt so I'm looking for the best of both worlds. @Motorcyclist Magazine I have a 2018 model, but losing air pressure at 10% per week on both tyres. Never gone offroad, just tarmac. My spokes look somewhat corroded though. I took it to Honda, who confirmed the deflation rate. We replaced tubes, and still happened to deflate. They are now ordering new tubes from Japan! Putting all tubes in a water bath, they don't show any leaks... It feels like I'm going insane! These tyres were supposed to be much safer to take the bike around the world, but I'm starting to get scared just to take her out for a weekly ride! Honda wants to tell me it's perfectly normal for tyres to lose pressure... but 10% a week seems crazy to me. I have owned many bikes before, and never ever faced such a high rate of deflation. The next thing I'll do is ask Honda to replace the rims. Any thoughts?

***** Sigh. Yeah no third-gear foolishness like my 950SE, but hey, I'm an old man...maybe it's time I spent more time on two wheels anyway :) Couple of other questions: What's the stocking gearing like? I've got short legs, and I'd love to find something with both 1st and 2nd gear down in the basement. What are the steering stops like? I loved my 950SE, but one of the big reasons I won't touch a KTM690 is because it has the same short steering stops. I tend to ride until I'm slightly over my head (old dog still trying to learn new tricks), including single track etc. Then I've got to get the beast turned around. It sometimes took me a full 15 minutes to the KTM turned around once I was in too deep. No fun when it's 80F out.
