This week on American Black Journal: June marks Black Music Month, a celebration of the contributions of Black musicians, dating back to the spirituals sung by enslaved Africans.
Host Stephen Henderson talks with Rev. Larry Simmons of Baber Memorial AME Church and Dr. Brandon Waddles, the assistant professor of choral conducting and music education at Wayne State University, about the history and influence of Black religious music.
Plus, the 17th annual Silence the Violence march and rally, hosted by the Church of the Messiah, brought hundreds of people together to honor shooting victims and discuss ways to eradicate gun violence.
American Black Journal contributor Daijah Moss was at the march to speak with families of gun violence victims and to hear from the event’s founder, Church of the Messiah Pastor Barry Randolph.
