Man, whoever you are, you just deserved a sub from me. I don't and have never owned 1 African Cichlid, but the Cichlid family is the main reason why all your 5 points ring the bells of truth. Yes, I've had to conceal the price of some of my equipment to onlookers/non hobbyist. I've also witnessed people scratch their head with one hand as to why I have 7 fully stocked tanks; while using the other hand to pat me on the back for having 7 pristine tanks. Damn this hobby is an irritating curse...but, I wouldn't cease it for all the money in the world!

Dead on. I am only a week into it but I saw a video and instantly knew these were the fish I was going to put in my new tank. Then when I walked into the store and all of them came right up to the tank wall, I was in love. I just got 3 and I have never had a fish with so much personality. They picked out their favorite spots right away and they have ocd with how tidy their area is. I love it.

Really like your substrate. What is that? And where can I get it?
@BenOchart
@BenOchart 7 лет назад
Hello Tyler H, this is a cichlid specific substrate from CaribSea, eco-complete (it came with beneficial bacteria included in the wet substrate). Overall sand works better but the fish really love moving this substrate around. Because it contains a lot of shells and coral it help buffer the water up to the pH cichlids prefer. I'm not sure if Caribsea makes it any more but if you're in SoCal I have a bucket of it that I'll give you for next to nothing.

Damn... I got into african cichlids a month ago... I'm enjoying this hobby a lot. I keep a lot of fishes though, monsters, cichlids, flowerhorns, angels, kois, etc. True you spend a lot of money and time, but its a great conversation starter and a great wat to relieve stress.

Omg lmao I know this is old but I had to comment and show it to a few that think I'm the only one. It's all so true and NOBODY outside the hobby understands. I have an advantage though I'm the wife 😁 so the new fish, filter,rocks ect... Goes unnoticed. Saves me from the "lying" aspect. Lol. I'm currently trying to figure out how I'm going to get my next tank (180g) into the house under the radar. 🤔😁

Hahaha great video. I haven't spent a ton of money on my tank but my 6 cichlids seem to be happy and doing well. I really love clown loaches too, but I was afraid the cichlids would kill them. Is there any trick to putting loaches in with cichlids? Thanks
@BenOchart
@BenOchart 8 лет назад
No trick to adding the clowns, just go for 2" or larger and add 3 or more at a time. They add a lot of fun and color to the tank. Over time they get huge, so you'll need a bigger tank or have to re-home them. But they grow real slow, so you're okay for quite a while. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Stumbled across this video. U are 100% right. I fell into this hobby on accident when someone gave me a 30 gallon fish tank, went to petco & thought I'd get cichlids. Went home & did research & long story short, I now have a 225 gallon tank filled with fish I seen on the internet & had shipped to me from basically every online retailer haha.

You were right with that first one! I saw some Red Cichlids on some youtube video and I thought "I have to have one!" I found some on e bay, they were juveniles ( German Red Peacock ). I had them shipped and I found free shipping and they all arrived alive. I am looking forward to seeing them grow and seeing the males develop their red color.

@BenOchart
@BenOchart 8 лет назад
Hey Anson, I'm glad you got a laugh and saw the humor in the presentation (some people actually have thought that I was trying to convince them to not get into AC's, LOL!). At any rate, my bucco (as you'll see in more recent videos) is just under 5" and is only showing some yellow in the anal fin and a few promising spot outlines in the back of the dorsal. I've got my fingers crossed because when they finally pop, they are amazing looking. Thanks for the comments and the view.

Ben ,you forgot aggression and hybrids 😆 Personally I got burned-out on having one big blue fish who killed all my other fish and didn't have money to buy more big fish Seeing everyone's tank and the options on line is very tempting it would be so hard for me to not provide caves,they love caves my big blue fish told me he would die for his cave and that cave and all those caves over there he also told me he loves lady fish and he would kill any fish over just the thought of lady fish😉

Hmm... Another question: well I decided to stray completely from cichlids ( don't get me wrong they're beautiful and fun to own but maybe just not right for me) (also I don't own any yet) but I was wondering do you think clown loaches would live well with a red eared slider? As long as they're the same size and have plenty of hiding spots?

+T-Man 428 T-Man, I almost included that one, "Sooner or later one of your favorite fish is going to die..." It sucks when it happens (like the bi-color I found dried up on the floor...). But, despite it all, it's still worth it. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I wish I saw your video before I got into African cichlids !!!! I'm on my third tank. I started with a 20gal that my kids started with goldfish and I wound up taking care of and then POW I found cichlids! went to a 75 gal setup and now a 135gal setup and just ordered a 220gal setup!!! I have over 200 fish and growing!! P.S. smaller tanks are full of fry ! LOL
@BenOchart
@BenOchart 8 лет назад
I hear you. I have a similar story. I was into fish as a kid and decided to buy my son a tank. Well I ended up taking care of it (just like what happened with the bird, dogs and snake), and I was off and running. I had discus for a while but it was the AC's that really got me. Thanks for watching.

I'm a beginner at all of this. I bought what I believe to be an Electric blue hap... I'm pretty sure, it has the shape, it has black zebra stripes and shiny blue scales with golden eyes... I just can't really remember the label besides the word electric... I made a mistake by putting him by himself in a 20 gallon tank... I recently got a 65 gallon tank and plan on populating it... The fish is pretty big already... But the reason I say that is to ask you... What fish should I get next? I know I'll need to buy more than a few to start off but how much more should I add at the same time? I want to make it a peakock and hap tank but idk what to do next
@BenOchart
@BenOchart 8 лет назад
There is a fish that is called electric blue that is a mbuna, as well as the more common electric blue Hap. You need to establish and be certain which one you have. Go to www.cichlid-forum.com and compare pictures until you are sure which one you have. Then I can give you some advice that I'm certain about. Good luck and thank you for visiting my channel.
@ApricotHensley
@ApricotHensley 8 лет назад
okay yeah i looked. its got to be the hap because mine has that slightly golden fin and its a darker blue with dark stripes.. all the pics i seen of the hap look just like the one in my tank
@BenOchart
@BenOchart 8 лет назад
Then go with more Haps and Peacocks. No females because the Electric Blue goes nuts during breeding. Maybe a Red Fin Borleyi, a Z Rock, a Fusco, Red Empress, Taiwan Reef, Bi-color 500, Otter Point, but ... you will want a 125 gallon in one or two years. It's part of the hobby. Good luck.
@ApricotHensley
@ApricotHensley 8 лет назад
what about sizes? he is pretty big like 5 inch, whats the max/min length i should go when adding new fish, i know ill need to add atleast four but i dont want them to be too small.. or the four that i get to gang up on the one in the tank
@BenOchart
@BenOchart 8 лет назад
Add 4 - 6 for sure. Provide lots of hiding spots and decor that breaks up line-of-sight. It will cost extra, but try to add adults. The big plus point is that adding 4 - 6" adult males will give you a colored up tank very quickly.

Hello John, No, as he got bigger and I learned more about Fronts I realized that he would be much happier in a colony of Frontosas. So, I gave him to a friend that has owned her (turned out to be a female) ever since.

Just started my tank stocking process, I don't care what anyone says! With ample hiding spots and feedings, you can get Mbunas and peacocks to co-exist. I have a few other red flags I added, with an arautus, and brichardi. Do you think I am going to run into problems down the road? ALmost all of them are juvies, about 1-3 inches.

My advice is to keep a close eye on things. Make fast adjustments when you see violence. Not the usual Cichlid chasing around, I mean when one fish starts to repeatedly beat up another over and over. Don't hesitate. remove one of them right away. Do you see my albino peacock? He's dead now. My bi color 500 started beating him up. I thought it had calmed down. By the next morning he was toast. As your fish grow you will make adjustments. It's part of the hobby. Good luck.

I can relate to reasons number 1-4 although I only lied a few times about how much some of my fish and equipment cost but most of the time I stay silent about it hahaha.I cannot relate to reason number 5 though since I don't know a lot of people who keep African Cichlids so I cannot argue or debate to them about it. Despite these reasons I will still go back to keeping African Cichlids since I already had some experience in keeping African Cichlids before back when my 75 gallon Amazon themed tank was a Malawi Tank and I want to experience keeping African Cichlids again since my goal was to have 3 tanks where each tanks and each tank will be based on a specific continent with fish from the area.Right now I already have 2 out of 3 tanks that have already been set-up(75 gallon Amazon/South American tank and a 30 gallon Asian themed tank).I plan on setting up my 46 gallon tank as a Malawi Cichlid tank some time next month although I would only keep one species of mbuna in it,namely the Electric Yellow Cichlid since they are readily available in local fish stores in my area and are not really expensive.

Turtlez robison I've seen it done but I've also heard horror stories. I would suggest not mixing African Cichlids and South Americans. Also, there are some SAs that cannot be kept with other fish at all. I suggest that you do a lot of research first. Good luck.

Hi Ben. I'm getting my 3yr daughter two Cichlids for her 4yr old birthday, would a 25G tank be larger enough for two male Cichlids?
@BenOchart
@BenOchart 8 лет назад
If they are juveniles, you'll be okay for a while but in about six months to a year you'll start thinking about a bigger tank. Haps grow very fast, so sick with peacocks and mbuna (one or the other other). Watch a lot of videos on RU-vid.

I was planning on getting 3 oscars and put them in a 150 gallon tank since i hear they need lots of space. With that being said, i don't plan on getting anymore than that and that's all i really planned so far. oh and i'm new to this kind of hobby but i'm willing to put time and effort. My only concern is that my house is elevated and i'm not really sure if the floor will handle a 150g tank. That so far is the only thing keeping me from actually going through with it.

@BenOchart

If you acquired a small one, a juvenile, you could keep him in your 75 for, I would guess, around 2 years. They are slow growers. Eventually you would want a 120 or maybe even a 180.

Its so true, after my first year of fish keeping and having 11 tanks it does get very tiresome. Money wise you can be savvy and frugal and just get second hand or sales items but the time maintaining everything is a big down side especially when you really care for the fish.
