1. The African elephant is the largest living land mammal.
The can grow to 13ft tall and weigh around 14,000lbs. African Elephants are slightly larger
than their Asian cousins
2. Tusks grow for most of an elephant's lifetime and are an indicator of age.
Both Male and Female African Elephants have tusk.
3. The elephant’s very large ears are used to radiate excess heat away from the body.
The very large ears even look like the continent of Africa.
4. Adult elephants eat 300-400 lbs of food per day. These hungry animals do not sleep much,
and they roam over great distances while foraging for the large quantities of food that they
require to sustain their massive bodies.
5. Elephants are extremely intelligent animals and have memories that span many years.
This helps them remember where water holes are located on long journies.
6. An elephant's trunk is actually a long nose used for smelling, breathing, trumpeting,
drinking, and also for grabbing things-especially a potential meal.
7. When bathing, the elephant sucks up water to spray on its body. Then they spray
dirt and mud on its wet coat, which will dry and act as sunscreen.
8. African elephants have two fingerlike features on the end of their trunk that they
can use to grab small items. (Asian elephants have one.)
9. Elephants are Herbivore. Peanut-loving elephants are a myth. Elephants, Asian or otherwise,
don't eat peanuts in the wild, nor are peanuts a typical diet for captive elephants.
In fact, most elephants don’t even appear to like them very much.
10. Elephants have very long life spans, the average life expectancy of an elephant
in the wild is 60 - 70 years. The oldest known elephant in the world lived to be 82 years of age.
