Yes i think it is common among all bantu cultures. Ive seen it in tanzania during food shortages and drought in villages people would eat small amounts special clay they mined and eaten during periods where they had very little iron intake due to trying to preserve their livestock. eating mostly yams and corn in these times, i dont think they were aware of the issue with iron but they understood they were lacking some important nutrient in food and ate it to supplement their diets. Pregnant wiman would too during drought. They were confident it would give them some additional nutrients they were lacking. I suppose they could eat peanuts or ither iron rich foods but these crops are introduced by europeans and people had already developed the understanding that this clay had the nutrients you need.
