Popular questions: 1. Can you extend the bed partially to fit a double mattress? Yes, you don't need to extend the base all the way, it's very fluid. 2. Can you use a regular twin mattress instead of the stackable mattress? Yes definitely just make sure the length fits and you are using twin not twin XL.
@@rp8247 I have this bed which my boys share. It’s quite a thick carpet and it’s a big hassle opening it. I mean I can do that but it requires a lot of force so I don’t recommend it.
I just bought this and I’m excited! I got the thinner mattresses from IKEA b/c I still have my tempeurpedic mattress pad for my double bed in college and I’m going to put that on top when people sleep on it
I’m around 5’10 (177cm) and I really really want this bed. I got kinda sad when you told be that you found yourself kicking the wood panel sometimes and that made me very disappointed :(. When I looked at this bed at their website it said that the bed was 202cm long. My mother was concerned that the exact same thing that happened to you was gonna happen to be since I’m so tall and it’s not fun to not fit in your bed (so we got happy when it said that the bed was 202cm long). I seriously love this bed tho and I can’t see me buying another.
have you tried buying a different brand of twin mattress for it? I’m just concern about the size fitting. I’m thinking that ikea made it so only their mattress can fit in them.
@@oloolederp Not for this bed. It is smaller. I'm debating whether to get it for my daughter because of this....She already has a perfectly good standard mattress but it's too wide for this bed. :(
Why cant all RU-vid videos be like thi.s. Very informative, very well filmed, No silly effects, No crazy music and not starting with "Whats going on" or "Whats Up RU-vidrs". Thank you for taking the time I really got alot out of this video. :-)
Agree and skipping over that 5min intro of ‘these are my other projects. If you like what you see, give this video a Like... hit the subscribe button!’ Nothing wrong with reminding ppl to support you, but simply copying the way others speak verbatim is a hostile burden to viewers. Thank you Tina Tomato... from Gina Pizzarina! 🖤
the sales person said mattresses ( that came with a matching boxspring) are made nowadays so that you don't need to rotate them anymore. Sounds too good to be true ...
@@ukelilly It is to good to be true. Depending on the style and materials used I would still rotate them. I used to manufacture furniture at Ashley Furniture for about 8 years. Never trust a salesman. They work on commission. Even then unless you are buying heirloom furniture and paying the kind of money that is attached to it all furniture is designed to fail at one point. That keeps the corporations in business. Some companies are better than others but few actually build bomb proof products.
I bought this bed when my son was 3 years old , I wanted him to grow with it . He often used it as a king when his cousins came over ,he is 18 now and I just got rid of it last weekend .it served as well .😂
Re: Assembly It took 2 lesbians 1.5 hours to put this bed together, and it wasn't complicated, however we're IKEA veterans and had a downloaded PDF on our phones that we could zoom in on, rather than going off the print which can at times feel blurry. - All in all it wasn't challenging but it needed 2 people.
my mom bought this bed for me when i was 15, i'm 22 now and i still use it as my bed. i built it by myself when we got it, you can do it alone but it took 2 days lol
I’ve heard that the mattresses pair really well with the IKEA mattress toppers. I’ve read reviews from ikea that the foam mattresses alone are just ok but with the toppers are a massive improvement!
To be honest, it doesn't matter which kind of matress you are using, it is always a good thing to flip them over every other week. This includes for really high quality ones!
I have that bed in my office. 5 full-sized bed pillows along the back and sides, and then 6 throw pillows in front of them. My guests have a choice of how firm a pillow they want to use, which they all seem to love. I bought one of the more expensive mattresses, and everyone comments that it's an amazingly comfortable mattress, though I haven't ever slept in it as a bed (fell asleep on it as a couch a couple of times, and hadn't meant to). I use the drawers for my linen storage. Overall, I love it and think it's one of the best IKEA purchases I've ever made. Pricey, but WORTH it!
Looking for this or something similar in my office too. Currently it doubles as a guest bedroom along side my office (work, play, and music recording) and it’s a pretty small room where we have a queen bed in there. Definitely gets kinda tight. Also when on zoom meetings it feels somewhat unprofessional just having a bed in the background. Having it set up as a sofa and having the extra room seems amazing. But now arguing with the gf on what style/color we get 😂
the ikea polyurethane mattresses are ranked #1 by consumers associations in Germany and Switzerland. mine, Even after 8 years, still in pristine shape.
@@bstr-ey6wl as my previous comment states I was looking into this daybed, and I ended up getting it along with the firm meistervik mattresses. I don’t mind them one bit, I haven’t slept on them yet but a love it for laying down for a few minutes and sometimes even a bit longer. I’ve had guests complain about it but these are very firm mattresses, these definitely aren’t for those with a preference of softer mattresses. I can probably add a think memory foam topper to get a happy medium between firm and soft, but otherwise I do like it and serves a good purpose as a larger bed when company is staying over and while looking better, taking up less room, and being functional for normal uses otherwise.
My HEMNES bed was 10yrs old when I sold it and Guess what? I bought back the same HEMNES design haha. Really loved the Daybed so I wanted to make sure I have a new one that can last me many years again. But there’s a huge difference in size with the new one now. It’s now 10cm shorter at the width and longer at the length. I think it’s to help accommodate the taller people situation like what Tina pointed out. I got 2 spring mattresses so I don’t have any back problems sleeping in it for that many years (got new spring mattresses later on when I realised the old mattresses don’t fit the new bedframe anymore) but the only drawback was that the stacked mattresses got pretty high... I have to kinda climb onto the bed lol. Of course when family or friends came for a sleepover the stacked mattresses became a normal height pulled out.
Rose Waters how do you usually sleep with it? I keep mine pulled out cause I have a baby and she doesn’t sleep overnight in her crib. So I have had it pulled out for a year. I have the newer foam it’s 150 but one mattress got so flat I’m feeling the wood and it’s pissing me off. I was thinking to change the bed to the other hemnes one with drawer it’s a regular queen but I do love this day Bed.
A D hi, I mostly slept with mine closed unless if there’re friends or family over. Perhaps mostly having the mattresses stacked up help prolong the mattress life? But it may also be because I went for the more expensive range with springs in it so it’ll never go flat to the wood. The one that IKEA recommends for the Daybed is simply a foam mattress so definitely not for prolonged use. (Edit) Change the mattress and keep the Daybed! 😁
Rose Waters hey. I have a foam it was 150. Cheaper than the spring in Canada. I’ll end up getting the two springs. It’s 1cm higher than the foam I have. How is it stacked ? Is it super high? But comfortable ? Or it’s hard? I will probably keep mine open just cause baby sleeps with me. And this is a king size bed? Cause queen doesn’t fit. Queen sheets that is.
Jorreca Hi Jorreca, in my opinion spring mattresses are always better as they last longer giving firmer support. However this also depends on which version Hemnes daybed you’ve gotten. IKEA’s current version doesn’t fit a regular single anymore so the only choice available in 80x200cm now would be foam. Hope this helps!
I’ve also had the hemnes for a while too, about a year. Honestly a great bed. As you said, it’s very versatile and I’ve gotta admit having a king sized bed to myself is pretty awesome. The drawers go back far and are HUGE, you can store blankets pillows and clothes or really whatever. Not many problems for me, but I also used the cheapest IKEA mattress that would fit with this lol and I’ve had no problems. I can pretty much sleep on anything anyways. I’d say that this is perfect for me. However the assembly and disassembly was probably the only somewhat bad thing about this. I’d say to not attempt doing it unless you’ve assembled a lot of IKEA stuff. My dad is a mechanic with a whole lot of tools and had already built two beds, a desk, and several chairs and even this was quite difficult for him. Assembly took about two days for him, but probably would’ve been shorter with someone helping lol I’ll help him next time since we’re moving soon. A big factor as to why this piece is so hard to assemble is the size of it. Regardless if you will use the pull out feature or not you still have to build it I believe. The frame pieces are huge too. It doesn’t take that long to disassemble though. BUT! Depending if you’re using this extended or not sometimes it can be very difficult to pull out the trundle thing on carpet and since it is also very heavy I’d suggest you put some kind of flat surface on the bottom but definitely not carpet where you’re rolling it out. This bed is great for bedrooms, guest rooms, and living rooms:
Kayla Sharayne no, I use separate twin sheets, and it works just fine. However, king sized sheets would work if you plan on permanently leaving it in its extended size! In fact I think king sheets would be slightly larger than the mattresses when left next to each other :)
I have watched this video and the new one where you have transformed the apartment. WOW oh WOW you did a fabulous decorating job. What is it that you do for a living? Where is this fabulous apartment? I love your channel.
I don’t know how you do it. I change my bed linens between 2 to 3 times a week. I just know if I tried to flip my mattress that often my arms would turn to dust.
Hey! Great Video I’ve never seen a video from you, but I enjoyed watching this one. So I’m from Germany, so it might be a little bit different (and I’m sorry for my English 😅). I got this bed when I was around 7 years old. My old bed was too little for me so I got this one. I‘m 14 years old now and I’ll turn 15 in 3 months. So my bed is pretty old now. For me, it works perfect. I once thought about getting a new bed, but since I’m into a sustainable and minimalistic lifestyle, I never thought about it again. This bed is great and I never found a bed, that’s this practical for me. I love that I can turn it into a big bed, if I want or need to and the storage is really practical. I have the mattresses, which you can get with the bed and for me, they worked good so far, because you can also wash the covering, so it won’t get smelly or disgusting. Sure, when I got the bed, I wasn’t really heavy, I was just a child but I mean, as a child you jump around and dance and do whatever in beds, so I wasn’t super careful 😂. One thing, which I am really sad about is, that the frame (idk if you can call it like this) got wet. It rained and the window was open. The bed is made out of wood, so it’s not in the best condition anymore but it still works good. All right, this comment shouldn’t get too long so that’s it from me. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
My wife and I bought this as our main bed. We have it stretched out and it provides plenty of room. We started out with just two mattresses, and that was OK, but after about 9 months or so we bought two more mattresses. It is very comfortable, was not very expensive, stretched over time, and we love it. The one drawback is having no fitted sheet for the mattresses. Overall the comfort of the bed overcomes that minor flaw.
Can you give me the dimensions for when both beds are out? I have a very tight space and am trying to measure how far out the bed would go if I tried to extend it.
A great review. My friends have this in their apartment. 3 of us can easily sit comfortably while watching tele, or playing on our laptops etc. They’ve not mentioned the issue with the mattress, but they’ve only had it since about middle of last year. It fits in extremely well with your studio apartment Tina.
I've had this bed for the last 4/5 years :) i like it a lot, it's cosy, good to lounge around in and the amount of storage is great. but you're right about the foam mattresses not being great for your back, and when i pull it out for sleepovers i find a single mattress is too thin you can feel the wood planks beneath lol. im moving soon and will be buying a new bed and higher quality mattress (i actually got an ad for that mattress while watching this video lol) instead of bringing it with me, thanks for everything hemnes...
This is by far one of the most helpful well made videos I have ever come across RU-vid or otherwise. I am interested in getting this daybed for the living space look yet functional sleeping space and you answered all my questions. Thank you. You are awesome!
All the reviews of this are crap? They all say the slats break & all the screws fall out after two weeks. Now I’m worried. If I spend that much money on something, I want a good bed.
Thank you for taking the time to do this review! I’m thinking about getting it for my daughter’s room that can also be good for sleepovers or if we have company in. This helped me a lot!
We have this daybed in our guestroom/office. It is usually in the king size configuration. To make it more comfortable, we use a king size mattress topper. Assembly was complicated and took my husband 2 days. Our wall to wall carpet makes it difficult to open/close. I would buy it again.
I assembled this by myself with a bad back and it took 8 1/2 hours (and then a few days to recover lol). Overall I LOVE this bed & it's versatility, though I do agree about the mattresses. I flip and change mine out regularly to help with the sagging issue (and I'm a 5'2" plus size gal).
Great and helpful video, Tina! Great timing! Helped me decide that this really isn't for me as aesthetically tempting it is. I'm already suffering with a mattress that gives me back pain or really uncomfy. How's your back pain? Hope it's better.
i have a "regular" mattress on my sons bed and it sleeps well. Like Tina mentioned, there is a two inch difference in the standard mattress and IKEA's, however, that is easily masked by tucking the comforter underneath the mattress for a neater look, if that makes any sense. I've slept on my sons bed to see how well it slept with the standard mattress and i could have honestly stayed in it! Very cozy and comfortable. BTW, I am not what you'd consider a spring chicken either-hope this helps.
It looks like her problems with the mattresses have more to do with a lack of regular rotating and flipping than an actual quality issue. Other commenters have pointed this out, so I hope she looks into that.
I love this bed, it's cute for my tiny bedroom, the drawers are much needed in my space, but the big thing I don't like about it - it's HEAVY and practically stuck in whatever place you initially put it. Mine is on a carpet, and I cannot even move it out a couple inches to clean behind it. There's a thick caking of dust and dirt behind it that I cannot reach. I would also need to have someone take it apart and put it back together when I move, because I don't want to give it up for now.
When I first bought this daybed, about 8 years ago, I thought that the mattresses were very comfortable. I'm only 5 feet tall, so I only bother pulling it out when a friend stays over, which means I normally use both mattresses on top of each other. When they started sagging, my back really hurt. I found that moving them frequently helped. They will go back to their original shape, if you don't keep sleeping/sitting on the same area all the time. (Unless the design has changed since 2015) I think it's sitting that does it, tbh. Also, you can machine wash the mattress covers to freshen them. When I moved to a new flat, I did the same as Tina and got the removers to take the daybed apart and put it together again. This is the only piece of furniture I've not been able to put together myself. And it's definitely a two person job, at least! As my new studio flat is much bigger, i was able to get my IKEA double bed out of my parents' garage, so the daybed is mostly used as a settee now. I use it all the time because I need to have my legs raised and supported. I have big cushions that I find better for my back than sitting on a chair, so my experience is different from Tina's here. But I do wish that it didn't have the lip at the top of the backrest, as it would make it easier to get comfortable! I would recommend this daybed, as mine has lasted well, but I think that the metal ones could be easier and lighter, which could be a consideration, especially if you think that you might need to move a few times.
Thank you so much for reviewing this. Viewers like me are incredibly thankful for you to make time and effort to make this video just to inform others. Happy to say I liked and subscribed. Xoxo, Subscriber❤️
I’ve had mine for 7 years and taken it apart and back together 4 times. The whole thing shakes it’s falling apart and the nails have ripped out of the wood in several places. Putting it together is a nightmare every time.
@@simonegodwin7449 yes you can actually take it of as much as you need so you don't have to rearrange it completely. Just try it out, it's actually not hard to take apart, just difficult to put together
@@juliajulia8173 thanks. I wasn't there whrn it was put together so I have no clue. Think we would need to remove the matresses, take out the drawers, remove the bottom section that slides out and then it might be light enough to pick up on its end, turn it round and put it back together.
Hi Eva can I ask , have you used other mattresses , say one with heavier weights than Ikea's Asvang(the one comes with this bed)? As long as the size fits, is it okay to replace with our own mattress?
I get firm twin mattresses from Asian furniture store! they are much better for the back support and it's been 2 years still super comfortable! They are also cheaper as long as you haggle lol
This was very nice and informative review. ^^ I't be great if you do more reviews like this. You could even pick random products from IKEA website and review the comments and share your opinion about potential purchase. :)
Old video, new comment. The length of it when (retracted) to sofa position, on the UK website shows as 209cm. You mentioned is 199cm. Are we sure is 199cm ?
wait a second, can I even buy this bed if I have carpet? you said it can’t pull with a rug on ): does anybody have this bed with carpet and can’t pull it out?? I need to know asap ):
Hi Tina, I've been contemplating a daybed for my living room to serve as a couch, bed for guests, and bed for myself when I want to nap in the living room. I really like the Hemnes, especially with the trundle. However, I currently rent, which means I'll eventually move out. In that regard, the Brimnes looks like it would be a lot easier to take apart to eventually move. Do you think the Hemnes would be a challenge to deal with during a move? Thanks!
I am also looking to get this daybed, perfect for my small room. The frame bed seems to be thin - how's the durability of it when fully extended? Will this bed be okay for partners?
I've been looking for a bed that takes up less space for quite a while now and just fell in love with this one. I've been doing research and I agree that the mattress is going to be an issue. I guess the only sensible way of going about this is changing it every 3 years or so. You said you've had yours for about 4 years, well now they have a way thinner one split in two, that you can zip together but this is my main concern for sure. 4 years is awesome though!!! I bought this random mattress off amazon and it got flat in a little bit over a year. Thanks for the video Tina, take care now!
I love my hemnes bed, have had it about 5-6 years now; it’s in my guest room, it’s used for watching tv and occasional overnight - I have the two foam mattresses that I flip, rotate and switch top and bottom regularly so no issues
Maureen Campbell I bought this bed for my parents who are coming from overseas for 1 month, do you think that when the bed is open double, those mattresses will make them uncomfortable, at least when it is close, it has two mattresses to support the back but I’m not sure when it is just one mattress
@@heidykatheryn8279 I'm worried about this myself. The bed will rarely be used... Only a couple of nights a year when my Mum comes to visit. She can sleep on it as a single or double, but the main reason we want this bed, is for if our neighbours are being noisy as we work early mornings. This bed will be in our attic room where it's much quieter, but my partner and I, both in our 30's are wondering if it'd be comfortable enough to sleep on when extended for both of us. We used to share a single bed when we first moved in together, but that was on a divan style bed. How have you been finding it so far? x
@@VenomousCatastrophe it’s been surprisingly very good. My parents are a little bit fussy with mattresses and they slept there for 2 months very comfortably. Sometimes I have naps there and it’s very comfy :)
@@heidykatheryn8279 That's great news! Thanks for getting back to me. This is looking like our winner. :-D We'll go and see it in person before buying, but it was the longevity we were mostly concerned about. Thanks again. x
It took me 4 hours, by myself, to assembly the bed enough to sleep in it, and another 2 to finish it. I agree, it would be worth paying for assembly. I purchased mine without the mattresses since I already have a couple of twin futons I could put on it. Although they aren’t very comfortable even with tatami underneath. I was considering getting the mats they usually come with but now I’ll reconsider. I appreciate your review
Excellent! Really enjoying your informative videos! Question: Do you have a "Day in the life of Tina" video? Maybe grocery shopping or night life? Might be neat to see! Best wishes!!!
i’ve found this video very helpful as i would like a new bed for my birthday and i have asked for this one but i have my own mattress and i would only use this as a single bed
The king size trick only works for the day bed bought in U.S. The European version and also the Asian version can’t do that trick, because pulled out it’s not a square it’s 209*162 cm (U.S has 199*194 cm)
