A local tree company dropped off my first load today. For free!!! They said they'll keep bringing it as long as I want it. Great stuff too. Not real big chunks or anything. I'm so glad I called them! They seem happy to get rid of it.
Keep doing it the way you are. I don't know if anyone else feels like I do. When I watch every video someone puts out, don't really know one another, but you kind of get the feeling of friendship. I know is weird. I live outside of a small town. There is nobody that has made a back to eden garden, besides me. I look for other peoples gardens when I'm driving.
When is the best time to plant a tree? 25 years ago. The next best time? Today. Have fun watching those apple trees grow. It will be the start of an adventure.
James really is an inspiration. Growing plants will teach you so many things about life. One of the best things I've learned is patience. Maybe one day you can do a video to show us your food forest. Grow on bro!
Have you thought about keeping bees? If not honey bees maybe native bees? Also I noticed that you don't have many early flowers. I know you are growing food but feeding the pollinators increases yeilds.
Is it just me or does anyone else "High-Five" the screen to James at the end of every video ??? … Loving your videos in any format, thank you for taking the time bro. :-)
Ahhh James you’re doing a great job. I took some of my Swiss chard into work today for my boss. She said it reminded her of the “Land of the LARGE “ everyone was impressed with the size of the leaves! I’m taking, more in tomorrow. Btw...my hands were drenched while plucking the stalks 😂 It’s fun sharing with others who appreciate organic, homegrown food 🤗
What is wrong with the people that vote thumbs down on these videos? What's not to like? They are interesting, educational, and Tuck makes regular appearances. Love what you do James.
I like these blended ones where you tell us what you are feeling, growing and what has helped and guided you, because you are such a passionate person that if you put it on video it has got to be important! I always have a take away from your videos. :) Thank you James, much appreciated!! ;)
James, I would love to see a video specifically on your supportive flowers and herbs...IE-what you grow any why. Thank you for what you are doing. Blessings
Hi James, what I noticed about adding woodchip to strawberry plant they come up with large glossy leaves. The self seeded lettuce looks amazing, I coppice my hazel nut bushes and use the sticks from it for kindling as I have a wood burning stove. This provides me with a lot of wood ash. This year I have been adding wood ash to the chicken coop where they have their dust bath then I gather all the scattered wood ash that is mixed with the chicken manure and add to my pot plants, as a result instant potash nitrogen fertiliser. When a little handful is added to any plant it means instant flowers and lush green leaves. I love the weekly progress James I compare my garden to yours.
Suggestions: Use a drone occasionally for overhead video. Also, show on a NJ state map where you are for orientation. Same thing with relation to the sun for your lot. The close up work is fantastic but sometimes it just feels like in a maze. Overall, some of the best content on RU-vid. Keep it up. Maybe sell something to fund production like honey or something.
Excellent input Gerald! Thank you, I like a lot of your ideas. Yeah honey would be good, bees would be fun. I do need to think of a way to fund this stuff with how much work I’m putting into it lol. Definite labor of love
I just converted my traditional garden (with great soil) to woodchipsnn tiller needs new carb so why not stop using it and go back to eden. And expanding my garden to double its size let that sit this year nezt spring plant in it. Waiting on rain here in east tn.
I've got a 3 year old food forest in progress in my front yard in Ocean County. Newly planted this season... apricot, buffalo berry, black aronia berry and white currant and so much more. I love your videos, James. Permaculture is the way to heal and feed the world. Mulch the planet! haha! Have a great day!
Long videos, blended videos, those videos you did last year from the desk where you featured your inspirations, maybe even other growers? I've got 10 acres to fill and you give me so much inspiration!
I love the shorter blended videos. I'm in South Africa and watch very video of yours that comes out. I love your passion as it inspires me. I also learn so much from your mistakes. Thank you so much. I would love a video of things that grow in the shade
hi, could you talk about peach tree curl? I put wood chips down last July and so it's still a fairly new venture. I didn't spray the trees with the sulfur lime that they recommend for that. I was wondering if I just continued to build the soil if it would correct itself over time? thanks!
God's creation is in full growth right now! Wow! It seems like yesterday you were still battling cold temps, and look at things now! James one of the things that some other channels do is what's called a 'walk thru' where they do a 30+ minute segment of the full food forest for the video. It's usually raw and uncut. Then they will do other videos that focus on a particular topic (which you do very well already). Both are great, and satisfy all us growers out there that love to see what you got growin' on brother! :)
I know you are developed beyond where you are here, as I am binging your channel after the fact. But, you asked a good question, and I have a good idea, that I think you will enjoy. I love Thatnub's videos of Paul Gauchi on his tours. He has super long videos with all details, and he cuts them down into a lot of shorter, more topically specific, areas. I think posting the whole tour is great, because I love watching them sometimes. I love the five to ten minute cuts of "talking about _______" or the other. Of course, we agree, here in the desert of Tucson, Arizona, that all your channel really needs is ... wait for it ... you guessed it ... MORE TUCK!!!
You gave great advise with pruning grape vines! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I live in an apt. in Seattle WA. that has a southern facing balcony. I'm growing potatoes, broccoli, tomatoes, green onions, sugar peas, sunflowers, squash, grass for my cat, fushia and Phlox, for many hummingbirds and sweet peas, just becuz! Grape is next! I'm thinking too...Ill probly not get too many potatoes becuz I'll reap what I sowed. I think I listened to the wrong person. Some of the potatoes I cut into pieces!!!! Yeah, I'll get out of it WHAT I put into it. I should of kept them big (whole) so I would reap big. Like, no love what you're doing btw. And thank you.
I have some questions 1.) Could I use black Walnut and larger wood-chips that may be dead?(I'm asking because energy potential seems to be low to me.) 2.) Could you please make a video explaining the nitty gritty science of this method for all of us nerds. :) 3.) Do you think that if you wanted to that you could make a decent yearly income off of gardening with the Back to Eden method? I would very much appreciate answers to these questions as I am studying horticulture as one of my high school science credits thanks in advance. (Please Ignore Spelling, English and Grammatical Errors){ PISEGE }
your videos aare full of inspiration for me, thank you. i just bought 4 blueberry bushes, peat moss, pine conditioner. IM STUCK. do i treat my alkaline soil (8.5) with an amendment before laying wood chips?
Thanks, James! I've got a very small space with a maple tree shading most of the yard out.. Just put in a Lapin Cherry and i'm hoping she will get enough sun! The part of my yard that gets somewhat full sun i've packed in a Honeycrisp, Haralson, Shinseiki, Shenko, lots of currants, honeyberry, gooseberry, raspberry, hazelnut.. I've got two Cornelian cherry trees on their way, as well as a quadruple grafted plum. I also need to find somewhere to stick these bluebell grape and shizandra vines; also trying to figure out where to put goji berry and nankeng cherry. So happy to have began this journey! Do you sow/plant/transplant with a lunar or biodynamic calendar, at all? I might have to shell out a monetary investment to get the maple pruned to allow more light in. Much love!!
Beautiful set up. I’m starting a food forest. I have truck loads of mulch being delivered daily. Exciting stuff! I bordered my property with green giant arborvitae.
Do you ever feel isolated even though you’re surrounded by neighbors...all bc they have no interest in gardening/growing their own food? The comradery, visiting each other’s garden, sharing tips, helping each other out with projects, etc ...think how nice that would be! But how many of us are lucky to have that situation. instead we are islands in a sea of mow&blow 😬gardeners hired by the neighbors. watching or making videos is a substitute for neighbors we wish we had! TG for YT so ppl like you and Paul, etc can share your knowledge 👏🏼👏🏼
Just keep doing what you are doing. Be you. Just be. You don't need to change anything brother. This is more "real" or personal... "Just a stroll through the garden sharing the day, sharing knowledge, sharing the excitement of The Gardener's Life!
How bout herbs? I'm trying to have every single herb that grows here...piedmont NC ......in my garden. I have cherries and blueberries and strawberries and pecans and peaches!i gave greens and annual veggies. Bad problems with squash Beatles.
I'm a new subscriber. I like this format for videos. I like long-form too. Maybe you could get a drone for wider angles and various perspectives. I enjoy hearing about what you read and study the most. Sounds like you're a believer. Your words resonate with my spirit. 😊
I've said it before..feeling it this morn. I wish, I could hang a huge big screen out in the garden so I could loop your vids..What? buy a lottery ticket...na na my friend more seeds. The garden is my guarenteed winning ticket! Thank you James for all you do!
Just found your channel and sub'D!!! Never thought about the wood chips but I've always mulched around my trees and they do well. Going to try your method for veggies and fruits. One question how do you keep insects that attack your plants away?
I may fit some of the trees for the new food forest but in the 7 yr old one there just isn’t enough room. I train the trees to grow more vertical to save space. I still train my peaches and stuff to an open center though, that’s how Paul does his apples
I will take any video you give. You make me smile every time. I don't have land, but planted huge herb forest in my window sill today. Maybe I can transplant to a Food Forest home someday ;) Love ya! Hi Tuck!
James been trying to get you to reply to me! I’m curious what size trees have you got. Standard, semi, dwarf? I’m struggling to decide. Love watching your videos always inspires me to keep going on the food forest!
Go to Habitat for Humanity Restore for tools, flea markets, garage sales, Craigslist. Discounted, used tools are everywhere. Also, contact your local Master Gardeners and you will learn about Gardeners who will give away plants for free. It's how I got 3 large boxes of strawberry plants. Also, look for end of season plant sales.
These kind of videos are what gets me on RU-vid. Your videos aren’t like other you tubers, and that’s a compliment! Haha don’t change, you’re content is extremely valuable. Keep it up :)
The forest is looking amazing, per usual. My quail eggs have hatched and I just got a load of cedar chips. Should I wait for the chips to break down before I rotationally graze the birds on it? I heard cedar can give them respiratory problems.
The forest is looking good! Can I use walnut chips? Just kidding. 😁 Would it be possible to lay down the contractor paper on my garden right now and lay wood chips? The ground is pretty much bare except for a few weeds yet. I would probably have to cut through the paper to put the seeds and seedlings in I'm guessing. I have a large pile of wood chips a tree service dumped on my property last fall.
James, I'm in Jersey too and have started my backyard food forest this Spring. I planted some fruit trees, berry bushes and strawberries and I'm using netting to protect the fruit because I'm paranoid the birds will eat it all. What are you doing to keep birds away from your fruit? How about squirrels? I've got both including rabbits and deer!
We are headed into heat days now, I know chard and kale are good all year round, what other vegies will grow well in the hot days of summer ? My spring grow is almost done..like bok choy, my gods I say they did amazing, my broc is biiig and green but nothing that looks like lil heads. My few peppers are banging. Tomatoes are doing ok. I fearfully covered my strawberries when the triple digits came..don't guess I needed to, yes? I have my cucumbers growing in an area that gets late morn and afternoon shade, they look good but growing a bit slow. Will bell pepers take the heat? I'm trying corn for the first time, these I know will take full sun. My favorite new discovery is Aunt Mollys ground cherries. What a kick! Got one the other day that tasted like pineapple coconut, one that tasted like pineapple-tommato, too much fun. Bright Blessings for your day my friend..
I also started a "Back To Eden Method" garden about 4 to 5 years ago, so it's very interesting seeing what others like you are doing with wood chips and the results you are getting ; ) I also hear a lot of negative talk from people who think too many wood chips will be bad for your ground.... but, as I grow things in the wood chips and then even the same plant out in the yard with no wood chips.... it's such a big difference!! I grew a zucchini plant one year.... the same plant in two different spots, the one with no wood chips got up to my knee and had lots of zucchini... but, the one in lots of wood chips grew about 5 foot tall or more... the leaves were huge, the zucchini were huge, my husband took pictures and no one could believe it was a zucchini plant. It is hard work covering the ground with wood chips, but, worth it. I really enjoy seeing your videos. Keep up the good work!!
An idea for you James: Have you seen the video commercials for the plastic peat filled root ball propagator? Maybe you could create something better for cheaper for those poor bastards to dumb to dig for gold. Nah, but seriously, propagation is the way to go! I've spent a couple grand on a half acre and, I still have a lot of ground to fill. It's time to start duplicating stuff! Got a question: I'm NOT an "organic" gardener and I don't want to be one. I enjoy chemicals and fertilizers and, I don't care. My question is about turning mulch or not turning mulch. I live on basically "sugar sand" with an 18" layer of compost from mulch a top of it. Instead of adding more wood chips, I've turned to collecting the neighborhood's yard waste and using that. What about the nitrogen cycle? Do I need to add more urea or 10-10-10 to the soil to compensate for the breakdown time?
Can you reccomend what can grow on shady north side city street in Brooklyn, NY? Something like white raspberries so 2 legged varmints do not know when it is ripe . And where can I find dwarf Asian pear fruit trees. Which variety do you reccomend for northeast humidity? Thank you. I really enjoy your videos. You have inspired me to not wait to move out of the city but to start growing now
I like all your videos. Maybe the ones where you show how you did a certain thing more. Like planting something or pruning. Oh I transplanted most of my strawberries to an area under my cherry tree. That opened up an area to plant peppers and Swiss chard. Still room for more veg. Thanks, I wouldn’t have thought of it on my own 👍😁
You're my favorite channel to watch, because you are more real than the other gardeners out there. I had channels I loved watching but they sold out and started promoting things more and more. I love that it's you genuinely wanting to help educate and get people growing. In my area everyone lives off of fast food and thinks I'm insane. Even our family acts like were aliens. But I love it and would choose this life over mcdonals and clubbing anyday. Do you have any recommendations on pest prevention? I would live to see that. Squash bugs and tomato horn worms are my worst enemy here in NC zone 7b.
You said, "be faithful in what you have, and something will open up for you". Amen Bro. Words of wisdom. So many things can open up for you. I pray that we all keep our hearts, and our senses open to truly experience the gifts God is giving us!
James, I like your blended style of videos, but really it's the passion for growing that I like. There aren't too many people around me that like to grow like I do, and I know of none who do the back to Eden, and none that have a food forest. I appreciate the work and time you take in shooting and editing the videos to bring us in to your forest. Would you ever consider making merchandise, like tshirts or something to help defray the time cost you input in making the videos? I would wear a "What's up, growers!?" Tshirt!
Thank you for this channel. You and Dan from Plant Abundance inspired me to start my own food forest. We weren't able to lay down the chips until this past March, so we didn't get the autumn head start. Would it accelerate the decomposition of the chips to sprinkle around fresh grass clippings from our front yard? If so, would it be more effective mixed in or sprinkled on top?
Question: how thick do you put your mulch? how do you get rid of the native weeds? I planted 2 blueberry bushes, ALL kinds of herbs in front of the house!
Do u have any issues with ticks? Do the woodchips attract them? I’m currently converting an overgrown forest property into a food forest and the ticks are everywhere.. I’m hoping as I open things up and keep a layer of woodchip and not leaves/weeds I’ll have less ticks..
I enjoy watching your videos because of the way you tell what worked and what doesn't. I especially like it when your videos show me how to build things or specifically plant certain trees or plants. Thank your for your encouragement.
I was going to ask for a tour of the greenhouse, then thought to check your videos. That first greenhouse video was your most inspirational for me, yet. When you explained how you had been salvaging and saving materials for years - that resonated with me. One of my goals is to spend as little money as possible on my gardening/food forest adventures. I am resigned to the fact that it will take a long time with many baby steps as I move forward. To see that you had a similar trajectory makes me happy and hopeful. I also loved your temporary greenhouse. That showed me that you don't have to wait for some big opportunity before you can move ahead with smaller, cheaper, but effective solutions. I don't think I'll ever have a big greenhouse, because my backyard is North of my house and isn't very big. But I can easily see myself creating some structures like your temporary greenhouses that could really help to extend the growing season for me. I'm a bit interested in your choice of using Red Solo cups. It seems to me that you may be wasting space and soil and that you could get away with a smaller container. I'm just wondering. You are thoughtful and deliberate in your choices so I imagine there may be a good reason I'm missing.
Fruit trees dont have to be expensive, just get creative, talk to garden people, find groups on fb. We had a couple of appletrees for just 3 $, we have a neighbor with an interesting appletree (late crop, dark purple skin, white flesh, sweet) we got permission to take a few small branches, went to a local nursery that graftet them on a small apple trunk for just the 3$. So two apple trees for just 3 $. Thats not expensive.
Hey James check this article out. I think it leads me to an understanding that it is actually better to grow annuals in semi-shade to reign in growth. www.politico.com/agenda/story/2017/09/13/food-nutrients-carbon-dioxide-000511 Basically there are few inputs to photosynthesis: water, sun, and CO2. CO2 has been rising, making our food grow too fast and less nutritious. So, I believe that this permaculture food forest concept allows us to shade out our plants just enough to slow them down and accumulate more nutrients.
Yup! All organic matter works great. Leaves usually have to be cut up though, or they could mat the ground out and restrict air if they are big like Oak leaves 😁 🍁
The Gardening Channel With James Prigioni Thanks James. Btw...I’m up here in Montreal and we are at least 5-6 weeks behind you as far as weather and growing is concerned...I’m jealous.
Thank you for showing what your persimmon flowers looked like. I kept forgetting to look that up. Wasn't sure if mine was flowering or pushing out more leaves. Lots of flowers then. May be the first year for fruit then! :-D
Planing to grow my food fores... it looks a rewarding process. But before applying the woodchips, I am wondering if it would be a good idea to apply a layer of organic matter and on top of it the woodchips. Do you recommend doing this? Wondering because the soil where to plant the trees it is not the best one... Thnkx
I really like the format you used in this one. It's made me want to watch all your other ones...I'm just in my first year or 2 of Back To Eden growing in our rental property. Thank you for sharing.
Hi James, we are in the UK and in year 5 with our B2E project. It gets better year on year but the one thing we just cannot seem to grow is brassicas. We can't collect our own seeds because they just don't seem to want to grow. We have heavy clay soil under the woodchip. Any advice would be most welcome
I live in Lillooet BC, it is one of the hottest places in Canada. I have a problem with keeping moisture in the ground. I will get some woodchips from tree companies in the spring. Thank you for these amazing videos, keep up the good work.
Beautiful! Often trees taken out by arborists may have pests or diseases. Just wondering if there is any concern of wood chips coming from diseased trees contaminating the food forest. I’m thinking of something like oyster shell scale for example.
If I could...I would Love to put a Large screen tv out in the garden so I could watch your vids while I work, you amaze and inspire.. Ye I am a bit odd lol
Hi I'm so inspired to try this method in my raised bed I wish it was spring! Question, do you use wood chips plus mulch on top? Or is it all the same product? I just noticed the top layer looks like bigger chips. And how often do you keep adding chips?
One last comment and I'll let you be about your day..promise What sets you above my other loved gardening channels is your music. It adds magicks to the view, it evokes very good emotions and thoughts creating a bond. Whatever your vids, it creates a bond of some sort between you and your community here..k
Thank you for your videos! Been studying your work for 8 months now and used it to guide me in my journey. I have just mapped out and are about to lay mulch in our first food forest! I have a question! The soil was recently turned when drainage pipes were installed and it's now just soil. Is the paper layer only necessary when there are weeds and lawn to smother or do I need to put it down on the bare soil? Thank you
I have a few questions. How deep do I need to put the wood chips? And at they decompose do you at more chips? Or do they never fully decompose? My wife and I did strawbale gardening last year. Not set want to try this instead.
I have used Garden of eden method for years. My main issue is pill bugs. Diatomaceous earth is a remedy but doesn't work great because they are underneath. Last year they destroyed all the roots of my plants. I was bummed.
Love your work. You’re food forest is awesome. I’ve got one started in the Hudson Valley. Planted Trees last Spring. Responding to the end of your video: I’d like to see some videos that stay strictly on topic. This one could’ve been concise and to the point about the wood chips. Showing more of the soil, worms, results, etc. and leaving out the garden tour part. Then compliment that with some longer videos that are extended garden tours. But thanks for it all. I’m learning a lot from you and I hope to be getting some results like you in the coming years. Thanks!
Beautiful man! We have moved away from two of our Back to Edan's from our previous homes and are now building on our own land and I can't wait to plan and put in our new Back to Edan at our new home and land when it's done! Keep it up.
