I really enjoyed SOI in the mid 2000s. All of instructors had just finished multiple combat deployments and it was 100% about training to keep us alive. Just no BS or stupid games. It was so refreshing after boot camp. Looking back I can't believe how much fun I had. Thought it was all downhill from there until I picked up in the fleet and it was back to constant hazing and fuckfuck games that always happen with the boot drop.
@matth3708
@matth3708 2 года назад
I got there in 2008. All of my SOI instructors had a ton combat experience and many had purple hearts. It was damn good training learning from those guys, especially since we would be in the same situations they had been in, a year later.

This is pretty calm and chill, I remember showing up at SOI we were getting screamed at the moment we got off the bus, I was both shocked and pissed off as I thought all that bullshit was going to be over with once we were done with Boot Camp lol. It was pretty much like showing up to boot camp all over again and for the most part we got treated like Recruits for the rest of our training. I remember a Gunny telling us "ain't shit different here then the Depot " lol.

But at the end of the day PI Marines have a special pride in being PI Marines that the boys out in Hollywood don't understand. There no inferiority complex there. Maybe a tinge of envy because we didn't get to go to a MLB game or anything like that and the island is so isolated that the drive back home after graduation feels surreal.

We didn't think we were going to make it. We finally landed and I went to a phone booth to call a cab. This was in 88 so the phonebook was the only way. The cabs listed their fees in the phone book to base. I found one that said it was a limo service and the price was the same as a cab. I said hell I may as well go in style. My amazing ex (23 yrs married since being kids with kids) was at Pendleton for MCT. He was at MCRD SD for Boot, then he went to a form of training to be a SAR swimmer and Crew chief. It wasn’t his MOS. His MOS was done at MCAS New River off of Lejeune. Jacksonville was a great place to live in 98. But when we were sent to MCAS Cherry Point out by Morehead and New Bern, somehow that was home for the next 8 years. His last 2 years before choosing to not re-inlist was in Va Beach. I have the utmost respect for everyone who has gone through the discipline and training that you all did. I wanted to go right behind him. After giving birth to our son, I was still amazing physical condition. He was all for it. It was my dad who didn’t like the idea of two Marines living under one roof raising babies together. So I went on to become a Funeral Director. Some say Mortician, some say Funeral Director. We did very well having been teenagers raising two kids. We also broke that teen parent generational curse. ❤

If you all were at Cherry Point in 98’ we (your husband) and me probably served in the same squadron. I was all-Pedro and spent a brief time swimming and flying but the C9’s there nearly broke me. Daycrew to nightcrew and back all in the same week. Was part of the job though. I just got a whole mess of questions from VA about being at New River/Lejeune etc. and the water contamination issues.

Michael Ryerson -- did it in 1964. It was called basic infantry training (BIT) In the infantry training regiment (ITR). Our entire recruit platoon along with two other platoons from our recruit series were in the same company. Everyone including 03 and all the others trained together for this basic indoctrination. Once BIT was over we all went on our first leave with orders to our first duty station. 03's came back to Pendleton for advanced infantry training. Things have changed in 50+ years. I admit I do not miss little agony. The first time we went up that hill people were taking off to the side puking, gasping for breath and at the top all the instructors were standing around like they had gone for a five minute walk on flat ground. You would think nearly 300 Marines fresh out of boot camp would have made a better show of the climb. Semper Fi

My thoughts only so, those that plan the training methods, I believe, have never been on the wrong end of an AK-47 or fight some extremely motivated (Somalis in my case) people trying to stab and beat us to death. Boot camp needs to hard. For the recruits, they have earned my respect if he or she graduates. They have no choice in how they get trained. You completely agree with ya.

What is interesting about the Marines is after basic training everyone goes to the School of Infantry regardless of sex or MOS. The moto is every Marine a rifleman (or woman). If your MOS is infantry you stay. If not you remain there for about one month and then go to your MOS school. My grandson completed SOI then went from Pendleton to Newport, Rhode Island for a nine month MOS. Due to Covid, at the time, I did not see him for a year. I am glad his Mom (my daughter) was able to attend MOS graduation. She flew all the way from Sacramento, Ca. for such. Now he is stationed at Miramar Marine Corp Air Station in San Diego and I see him more often. We are so proud!

I used so much Brazo I can still remember the smell of the stuff. We would see zippers into Trops so that they could be worn extra tight, to show off our well formed bodies. We felt like old hands during the last phase of 12B OSUT. (Can't remember if it was 'black' or 'gold' phase.) When those of us going overseas had to go back to reception for extra vaccinations we felt SO good seeing the brand new arrivals still in civilian clothes right where we were a few months earlier. We asked our drill sergeant to put on a show and smoke us to scare the new arrivals; he wanted to but said he'd probably get into trouble. Then when you get to your duty station it's a reset as you're the new boot that doesn't know shit.
