As the crisis in Ukraine continues to intensify, so does the relentless war of words in and around the conflict.
Vladimir Putin shocked many by saying Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has only just begun. One thing is for sure:
with heavy shelling targeting residential areas, it’s civilians who are paying the deadly price.
The Ukrainian side, meanwhile, says it’s seeking to amass and arm a million troops. So, on TO THE POINT, we ask:
After capturing large parts of Donbas: will Putin have an appetite for more?
Our guests: Liana Fix (analyst), Moritz Gathmann (journalist) and Roman Goncharenko (DW)

I think Russia will gladly take Donbas and the southern regions as a victory. Once they secure the Donbas it's highly unlikely Ukraine can take anything back. Maybe there will be some kind of DMZ in future between Ukraine or Russia or at least a long term ceasefire where Ukraine doesnt officially accept Donbas as independent but also they wont try to take it back because any offensive will be costly and retaliation of Russia will be more artillery and missile strikes on Ukrainian cities.

This interview of experts in Europe was very interesting. As a non-European observer, I’m struck by the apprehension, reluctance and the general vibe that the experts and Germany are scared and willing to do whatever is necessary to avoid further pain. I guess weakness springs to mind. Take the concern discussed about not wanting to cross some kind of line that might trigger Russia Bombing Kiev. To an outsider watching Russia destroy a peaceful country, one mouthful at a time, this “concern” looks very cowardly and a more sceptical observer might say full of self interest. I think Russia knows Western Europe better than they know themselves.

Not exactly. We Germans are great in crying but I myself do not know how we will act. Could be surrender or full frontal. Putin has faced whining and selfish Germans for 20 yrs. He must have thought we will temain so and not change at all. But he might be terribly wrong. Green party was about liberal identity politics and now they have turned hawkish. Opposition leader Merz is no man for games. We simply do not know what will happen.

History books hypocritically portray that the cause as German ambitions at world domination while Britain was doing exactly that. Likewise, the trigger for the present conflict- overthrow of a democratically elected pro-Russian president in 2014- is swept under the rug in favor of 'Russian ambitions at hegemony' forgetting that NATO has waged war in Iraq and Libya for exactly that purpose. And you all wonder why the 'global South' view current events as Russia stopping a second round of colonization.

Next strange question. Why ask when we are all knowing Putin's dreams: At first unite Russia, Ukraine and Belorussia under his power. Then restore Russian Soviet Empire. Then submit Western powers by mix of corruption and threats and restore bigger Russian Empire. I hope all have listened his speech about "collecting/gathering lands" on whatever Russian sometimes had some influence again under Kremlin's power. "It is our historic obligation" he said. As nobody doesn't join with Russia, it means new wars and new horrors - but for Russian imperialistic mentality it is all OK and "noble" purpose. And to question "Is Putin really have greater aims and purposes, we have doupts in that" just shows total ignorance about Russia's Führer.

Western experts estimate a bracket between 50-70K casualties. About 7200 servicemen are missing according to Oleg Kotenko, Commissioner for Missing Persons under Special Circumstances; which usually is a low percentage in the casualty mix, even if half may be of prisoners not yet confirmed. Being high, means either that the real number of losses are higher, or that there are soldiers deserting and abandoning their positions. We have seen several units manifest themselves nearing mutiny, be it for lack of resources or poor leadership by their local commanders. Even if the real data is still unknown, the Ukrainian society is beginning to grasp (burials, wounded, relatives ...) that the number of losses is higher than what its government would like to admit.

It doesn't help that Germany is not freely helping with equipment for Ukraine, but is steadily helping Russia with finance for this war (energy supply payments). In fact Germany isn't even applying the sanctions and is constantly applying pressure on other nations to break sanctions (gas valves in Canada for example). So in effect, Germany is supporting Russia in its efforts to invade Ukraine. As a child I was taught by my parents that I need to suffer the consequences of my bad actions or poor decisions. Germany made poor decisions (despite warnings) in relying on Russian fuels. But Germany is making Ukraine pay for its poor decisions. Germany should, at the very minimum, put a tax on all Russian fuels equal to the amount it pays to Russia - and that tax should go to Ukraine's war effort (in arms or cash). At that point Germany would be neutral in its support of either side. Come on Germany! Wake up. East Germany was part of the USSR empire.

@@davidsaribekyan7325 What do you mean destroy their economy? Germany's still forecast for growth. Now if Putin permanently cut off gas that would certainly cause some mayhem. That was kind of a bed the German's made themselves despite several warnings not to trust Putin. But let's be real, even if Germany's GDP fell by 50% ( which wouldn't happen) it would still be a very significant size, more than Russia's. If you mean why act? I can think of a couple reasons, the people wouldn't accept no action. It would alienate Germany's allies. And it would set a precedent that wars of conquest are tolerated, which would invite conflict elsewhere.

Our EU leaders denied EU citizens affordable energy for the sake of democracy. I wonder, If Ukraine wins the war, will it suddenly become a democracy? Will Russia? Or, If Russia wins, will EU countries suddenly become autocracies? Stopping cheap long term Russian gas contracts for expensive short term contracts is economically suicidal. We are acting like we are on a economic high. In reality Europe is facing the depression of the century. Weaponizing Ukraine, if the outcome favors Russia, was the worst possible decision.
