I still find action/title safe useful for RU-vid because when I watch RU-vid on tv I see so many videos where they didn't use those guides and their titles, lower thirds, logos are cut off. Plus having that negative space on the edges is aesthetically pleasing.
Title and action safety guidelines for broadcast in Europe has been updated to 5% and 3,5% in 2017 by the EBU, not many people know this. One of the first things I do when installing a new AE version is remove the 4x3 title safes and set the outer safe from 20% to 5% and the inner safe from 10% to 3.5%.
I'm old enough to remember the need for title/action safe guides. And yes, even though they aren't needed for online content, they do still haunt me 😮💨
As someone that is also follicly challenged, I appreciate all the hair related puns this week. Also, can't wait to get into Overlord 2! For the folks that haven't used the first version, just buy it! In fact, buy ALL the Battle Axe plugs! No, seriously, I have them all and they have DRAMATICALLY improved my workflow! 10/10 Good ep, sir!
About the safe areas, because I produce a lot of content for broadcast, I still use them really often. Not the 4:3 part since no TV channel broadcasts in SD anymore, but the Full HD safe areas are mandatory and, believe it or not, useful. Trust me, I learned it the hard way when my client called me years ago to ask me why their logo was cut off on their TV.
Love the mini tutorial! I still use the action safe lines for designing to make sure I'm not getting too close to the edge, but I haven't had anyone stress about using them.
I still design most of my work for title safe/action safe, but I’ll cheat it more readily than I did when broadcast delivery used to reject things for not respecting the safe areas. I’m not worried about title safe as much, but I still want to keep my text more in the center of the screen than on the edges so that the viewer gets the message.
My company make videos that display on a wide range of displays from the gas station registers and gas pump tvs to vending machine with 32 inch hd displays and a lot of time these displays will have crazy bezels that will eat into the screen space so the safes are still relevant.
One more thing. With the title safe while not broadcast you could use it to mark for social 1x1 sizes into a 16x9 size. Just set it up and don't why I haven't done that before. Got the idea from someone in the comments mentioning changing it to updated safe areas.
in vfx, we still have to make sure our screen content is title safe/action safe. Lets say a character is on screen and is texting someone. That screen content for messaging must be title safe.
1. Loved the Grungy Quick Tip. ❤🔥❤🔥❤Would fully love to see more of those, or would get me to engage with your shorts, if you wanted to drop them in there? Could also be easily linked and shared with others, as shorts 2. AI generative stuff... I agree, to date, my experience with these tools has been mostly miss, if what I'm looking for is a finished product. But in terms of getting you 75-80% of the way there, then it's more hits. Also, I find it useful for brainstorming, both visual brainstorming, and written brainstorming. 3. Action Safe Guides, I stopped worrying about 4:3 guides years ago... but I still mostly try to keep any text or motion graphics at least within the Action Safe. Not because of concerns about getting cut off, as almost everything I do is distributed on RU-vid or social media channels, but it's a good general rule to start with, much like the rule of 3rds.
definitely will still get stuff rejected if it strays outside of title safe, even when the show is 2:39 and the top and bottom edges will be practically in the middle of the 16:9 screen.
as a 3d artist, i'm struggling to find a place for ai in my workflow, specially in client work. my biggest issue is the lack of "directability" of ai, specially for the minute comments that clients often ask for, you just kinda have to hope that what you type will give you what you want (i know you can write in very detailed prompts and whatnot but it's still not an open file for me to change how i want as i would in blender for example)
Exactly, that's how I feel. For me, AI is basically stock imagery that has slightly more control (because you can prompt it) but you still have to do a LOT of work to make it useable.
This year, I had to use those safety zones again for our company's risk warning in an animated TV commercial for the UK. So yeah, it's still a bit of a hassle to manage.🥴
Love the videos and Overlord is an incredible plugin but why describe the one time purchase as some sort of benefit? Things are already out of hand with so many software subscriptions. I'd hate to imagine a world where we are regularly paying subscriptions for plugins on top of that.
I still need need to deliver my videos with title safe for broadcast. Also with all these different phone sizes it is also relevant today for Social Media delivery
Ai is a great tool but I'm always confused on how to art direct scenes. Traditionally, you'll storyboard and then Styleboard an animation, flesh that out using AE or C4D. Now, you can text prompt a scene which is great and a time saver but how do i move the camera for a better perspective or change out some models, graphics, ext in the scene? It's hit or miss like you said. I can see artist's still using traditional means and supplementing it with AI generated models or smaller tasks. It just cant replace everything a motion designer is capable of.
Yep. AI stuff is basically stock footage / imagery at this point. A great starting place sometimes, but not even close to getting you a finished, art-directable piece.
I use AI extensively. The footage can be tracked. As with any media creation like taking your sketch or painting to photoshop or your footage to After Effects, it is a step in the progress and all one man armies should use it.
I think a lot of motion designers struggle with character animation in after effects, if you can create a full course of character animation but in moho pro. That would be a great one, I see moho can create stunning character animation and it's better than AE
Right above title safe if it’s multiple lines. Right above or right below if it’s one line. Depends on if I’m doing car commercials or not though. For those it’s always above the title safe line.
