After Hours 35th Anniversary Video Essay
Between the landmark films of Raging Bull and Goodfellas Martin Scorsese directed some interesting director for hire movies that displayed his usual flair and creativity. After Hours (1985) is one such film, a quirky thriller, like an absurdist Hitchcock film that charts a lonely man's misfortune in New Yorks SoHo after dark. Beneath the surface of this entertaining comedy are some dark and interesting subtexts that are beautifully drawn out in the visual under Scorsese's masterful direction.

Take a journey with me into 80s New York guided by Martin Scorsese as we spend time After Hours through this strange and disturbing odyssey.

'After hours' is an underrated classic - nightmarish, full of weirdness, surrealism and urban paranoia and the deep fear of being lost with nowhere to go. And Griffin Dunne is amazing in it. Enjoyed the video and analysis.

Very good stuff. Good editing to bring out your points. I too agree that the day we see is a bad dream that comes to Paul while he's trying to think of life beyond his office building. The most telling detail is the way Paul is 'stolen' by the same two burglars and left off outside the office premises. It's like a closed loop now.

Raging Bull was released in 1980, but it was IMO a 70s film. After Hours is very much Scorsese doing an abrupt face, indulging in a dark comedy of chance and interconnecting story strands. I absolutely love this film, hilarious and bloody terrifying at the same time, After Hours is IMO Scorsese hitting the restart button after the debacle that was The King Of Comedy and in turn he has created not only his most mainstream film but his best film of that decade (excluding Raging Bull of course)

Enjoyed your take on "After Hours" as it is a favorite. Thanks 5:00 noticed the background apartment window near Paul's head reflecting what he might be thinking. 9:17 Paul looking at the vertical sign on the building on the left saying something. All I could make out was "WORK" as in 'obey' or 'submit'. Both visually like the loneliness of the American painter Edward Hopper. Checked your channel to see which movie to pick next. Some recommendations (in case never seen) Vincent Ward's 1988 "The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey" John Demme's 1986 "Something Wild" Jim Jarmusch's 1986 "Down By Law" Martin Scorsese's 1999 "Bringing Out the Dead" could be considered a bookend to "After Hours". Every listen to the voice of the Manc Pete Beard's voice on his channel " Unsung Heros of Illustration" ?

@@MovieBirthdays You're welcome Pete's voice is well, distinguished reserved melodic ... and his presentations ain't too shabby either :) good guy P.s. Ironically, any New Yorker seeing "After Hours" would wonder why Paul Hackett just didn't walk back to his apartment. Easy to have done except the psuedo romantic part of him 'yearned' to be bohemian. Sorry, getting long, recently rewatched Luc Besson's "Leon the Professional" or, the edited "Professional". Interested that his "Fifth Element" is a continuation of "The Professional" rebirth thru fire as is Leeloo (Milla Jovovich ... genuflect) in The Fifth Element" ... just rambling Best

@@MovieBirthdays While its about a thirty-eight minute walk, 2.2 miles, from 28 Howard Street, Kiki's studio, to 11 Madison Ave. the Metropolitan Building Paul worked at, even considering Soho was a iffy place to be after hours back then, there would haven't been a movie :) How many movies are there that the main character leaves midway thru the movie, besides John Wayne movies ? Seems what crashed & burned was Luc Besson's marriage to Maiwenn Le Besco (1992-1997) then Milla Jovovich (1997-1999) which reflects the making of "The Professional" followed by "The Fifth Element". Maiwenn was in both movies, first as a service worker then as the diva in the second. Guess Besson's "Messenger: Joan of Arc" wasn't received well which points out movies where the main character dies doesn't do great in the box office returns ... kidding, sort of Guess audiences after identifying with a movie character who passes away can't accept their own mortality and want another chance demanding a sequel. dang, datsa Tibetan Buddhism for you But the real question is was Kiki Bridges squatting in the building later becoming a certifiable A.I.R.(Artist In Residence) buying the building for pennies on the dollar and now comfortably retired after selling it for millions. That would be art imitating life.

Tony Hallett I first saw it late one night on TV when I was about 9 or 10 (I know) and for some reason it just stayed with me. I think the novelty of it being almost real-time was what made it memorable. Plus it was probably the weirdest film I’d seen at that time.

I'm not sure why many reviews of different movies always come to the conclusion that it was all a dream. This was the number one hated cliche of hollywood and writers. Submission requirements actually had a list of cliches to avoid. #1 on the list was avoid 'it was all a dream' scenario. Viewers invest time and emotion into a vision only to find out it was dream / hallucination annoys the hell out of them and they don't bother with repeated viewings or expenditure on videos/dvd's etc. Reviewers are obsessed with the 'it never really happened and it was all a dream idea' for the Shining, total recall, inception, and a bunch of other movies, on very sketchy evidence.
@MovieBirthdays
@MovieBirthdays Год назад
I guess it adds another dimension or layer to what we think we are seeing. In regards to After Hours, the film becomes so absurd and nightmarish that it lends itself to surrealism. I do agree though, the it was all a dream thing can be unsatisfying but only when it is literal. When it is more ambiguous it compels us to watch the movie again and again to make sense of the puzzle.
@MikeWhiskyTango

@@MovieBirthdays That's true. The film Shutter Island actually supports that view.
