Brilliant scene. Ricky showed his great range of acting skills during this scene. When the girl announced her name was “Lisa” the way he quickly looked up, as if to say; “of course you are” … what a moment that was. For the child to commit Ricky to coming to visit, and again the next day, or until she went to heaven … you could tell Ricky was looking at this beautiful, brave little soul and understanding how precious life is and how grateful we should be to grow old. I’d be curious to know how many takes were shot for this clip. Probably the best scene of season 3, or even the whole series in my opinion.

@steviacandyman7892
@steviacandyman7892 2 года назад
What got me is Tony's atheism being confronted with dying children asking him "do you believe in heaven?". When he said "definitely", it was a moment I often consider as an atheist myself. Do we give children a comfortable and lovely lie or do we try to prove we are right? I am okay with a comfortable lie because they lose nothing by it if they pass away. That fear of the unknown, fear of darkness, fear of not existing disappears if you simply reassure them. I'm fine with it. If I can make a horrible situation a little brighter for them, I will never deny them that. To me it's the same as telling children Santa Claus is real and let them figure out that he isn't later. I have to admit I cried a little.
@sofiamarie9136
@sofiamarie9136 2 года назад
Well and there’s the scene where he wondered if Lisa was scared at the end because he was clear that he didn’t believe in heaven and said he thought it might be that she wanted to believe at the end and he wished he could have given her that comfort and letting her believe if that helped her not to be scared. So now he gets the chance to for someone else and learn from that lesson.💜
@mortemoccasus2412

I don't believe in biblical and papal nonsensical and bastardized heaven. These children, and their lives, they're ought to be heaven, that's heaven for me.
@thecassman
@thecassman 2 года назад
As an atheist myself, I couldn't agree more. For me, the one thing that religion brings people which I would never aim to take away, is comfort. In these moments of fear and vulnerability, if somebody questions the existence of heaven, I will always say what brings them comfort. Its the right thing to do. Ricky Gervais, I feel, is the same and he wanted to show that via Tony... Many of Tony's opinions, thoughts, feelings are identical to Ricky's so I do think he used him as a voice for his thoughts, whilst making himself slightly disconnected from them.
@JCMcGee
@JCMcGee 2 года назад

@robertocaesar
@robertocaesar 2 года назад
I don't think you're right. Yes, Ricky may be lying, or maybe feels that he's lying. But I think that precise moment is not about the lie or the surprise that he gets because of the question. I think Tony gets confronted with the reality of not knowing where to go. He is helpless, he can't argue if there's heaven or not. Remember the question is well crafted. The kid doesn't ask about a God. He asks about a place where you go after you die. And that question is even more difficult to argue, and to a dying kid. You can't argue about it. Because you don't know what happens when you die. But Tony gets his grip, he remembers that his wife still lives in his heart, and maybe he can assert that there can be a heaven where you go after you die.

In a 28 year old father who prides himself on being strong and to carry my family through hard times no matter the storm, I cry often in my car alone on the way to the gym or coming home from work, I don't often cry in front of people as I feel vulnerable and can't let go, but watching this series I cried and laughed within the space of 2 minutes in front of my wife who just smiled and gave me a hug, I hope to teach my son that expressing your emotions to the right people can unburden some weight when it becomes to heavy to carry, but that doesn't mean you can't do something it's just mean you need to feel how you feel and keep moving forward, I learnt alot from this show from a parenting perspective, I hope my son becomes a much better man than I one day

this scene is really healing my soul, not just Tony's. Life is temporary. You actually don't possess anything in life. Everything comes and goes. The only thing you should do is just to be kind to yourself and to the world. Thank everyone and everything that created this scene

The point where Ricky realized what the girl would go through if he opened up about his wife was soo overwhelming...and how brilliantly he hold out to pacify the girl was an absolute delight to watch...

“Making your tea?” “Yeh” 😢 That’s such a brilliant piece of acting. So much emotion projected in one simple word. He misses it and for the one brief moment he actually felt happy thinking she’s at home waiting for him. Such a beautiful moment

This was the best ending of a series ever! I cried again watching this last scene. I don't agree with the suicide speculations I think it was his statement of how life goes on and how short a time we really have on this earth. Beautiful!

This scene really speaks to me personally in so many ways. Excellent portrayal by Ricky Gervais in how he wrote this script and the scene. I find my RU-vid channel is what has allowed me to feel like I am helping others in similar circumstances. An amazing show, and one that has a far larger impact on people than I imagine he ever intended it to have.
