Ezra Klein, Bob Wright warned them. It’s time for Democrats to be humble, admit their mistake, and do the right thing. I’m in the UK, but that debate was catastrophic. Biden will never win this.
Really? You underestimate the woman vote. You can put in a puppy as a democratic candidate and she would win. The GOP partnered with the wrong people. You can take their lobbyist's money, but don't drink the Kool-Aid
@@Chris-rv5mmIm a woman. A puppy? maybe. But Joe Biden needs to put country first and step down while he can still do so with grace, purpose, and leadership. Ezra was right in February. He will be much more right in November.
It's way too late, like years not months. Whoever ended up with the nomination after who knows how many votes and how many weeks or months at the DNC would walk out of there with a campaign war chest of exactly ZERO dollars. . Why? Because it would be against the law for anyone else to spend one dime of what has been raised so far. It would also be against the law to spend one single dime of their own campaign money raised for any other office besides president. It would be political you-know-what-icide.
The democrats are going to waste the next few months fighting amongst themselves "Biden can do this" / "No he cant", and then just end up losing the next election in the meantime 🤣🤣
this is exactly what will happen unless they wake up and realize that rigging the primary and colluding to censor RFK was disastrous and that RFK and his large #s of supporters is the only way that trump doesn't win this election #Kennedy24
JaJa...I am a Dem since birth...my dad was one of the Dems in smoke filled rooms...as bad as my generation thought those days were as they were not democratic enough hence the primaries...but the Truth is that system would never have Biden and Trump running as the candidates. Joe probably would not be able to finish another 4 years...if the Dems don't go to a open Convention, Trump will be the President which last time around it was the longest 4 yrs of my life. Joe is definitely in big time decline. He needs to do the country a big big thing and decide to step asice
I normally avoid listening to this collection of opinion writers due to their silly banter, which I find extremely annoying. Ezra Klein made this bearable. Bob Wright (nonzero) has been warning about the Biden problem long before anyone else was brave enough to do so. Please increase the heterogeneity of your paper’s listening base by broadening your own.
Ross Douhart is why I cancelled my NYT subscription. I'm happy to debate honest reasonable conservatives but I draw the line at mendacious grifters of whatever political persuasion. Clearly the NYT only keeps him on for the clicks and I despise that too. No journalist should both sides truth, that only enables lies. The NYT won't enjoy fascism. I've seen Cabaret, fascists won't both sides them.
Americans are being killed by illegals on a regular basis and you think him not being president is a bad thing? I personally already know two people who lost their lives because Biden wanted to pander, one was a mother of 2.
It sounds terrifying but less terrifying than the alternative. There is another guy in cognitive decline: Donald Trump. Add cognitive decline to a lifetime psychopathy/ narcissism disorder and you get a potent cocktail for some truly erratic decision making if he gets a second term. Added to that, any GOP leader will be surrounded by quite a few nutjobs among his key advisors.
If he was going to he would have months ago. He’s too much of a narc… to step down. Not to mention AIPAC likely encouraging him to stay in the race. Also, the entire Democratic establishment that surrounds him depends on him running/remaining in office to maintain their positions, and lucrative pay. If he steps down, it’s because a very influential donor pulled the ripcord.
@@vladsaveluc2659 No one believes he is sharp otherwise. The current impression outside of the loyal democrat base is that the DNC and news media were all lying when they said Biden wasn't senile. That everyone saying it was just a cold is either lying or in a cult-like mentality similar to MAGA.
I think both beat expectations. They both showed up with pants on, neither defficated directly onto the stage, neither hallucinated being attacked by bees. Great jobs all around.
35 mins in I agree with Ezra. I am a speech language pathologist. Language skills can develop or regress independently of other higher order cognitive skills such as reasoning and problem solving. Joe already has preexisting expressive language issues on top of age related changes, which btw do become worse under stress, lack of sleep, having a cold, etc. That doesn't mean his reasoning or comprehension skills have been compromised. On the other hand, Trump has some serious comprehension issues despite being verbally fluent. So we have two candidates, one with a language disability and one with a learning disability (Trump). Think about who they surround themselves by to pick up the slack, and which one is morally corrupt. The better choice is still clear. This debate changes nothing for me.
Your take is accurate, except that what changes is Biden's chance to win in November. This debate, on top of the already weak polling indicate a loss. IMO nominating Gretchen Whitmer, while an acknowledged gamble, improves the Dem chances for a November win. As Ezra had said in February, the amount of free media coverage at the party convention can take a regional name national in short order.
I think the problem is that at the end of the day it doesn't matter. Republicans don't care about facts, Democrats only care about facts, and independents don't know who to believe. I agree that the cards were stacked against Joe, but people came to this debate asking "Is Biden experiencing cognitive decline?" and whether all these factors were there or not, they got their answer.
I agree, except that Trump is "verbally fluent." That's a stretch, especially if you have ever watched Trump at a rally. Compared to Biden at the debate though, Trump came across as vigorous, and his speech was more understandable, however insane the content.
If they can regress independently, it doesn't mean that this is what happened. A possibility doesn't mean a necessity. So you don't know. It could just as easily that he is cognitively impaired.
@@tharlow3746 And the Biden team themselves are clearly fools for thinking they could hide Biden's mental competency from the american people for an entire election campaign. "Sharp as a tack" my ass.

The advisors, strategists, appointees, and most of all, the people that paid to put me here. The people that pull the levers and work the machine. The unseen people who are typing these words as I speak them - there are three of us and two AIs. That's what I am, and you've always known it. Vote for me, because I am the best construct for the job." - Disneyland Abe Lincoln, announcement for candidacy 2032.
I have been through about 15 office health and safety training seminars. Biden looked like the guy in the video that you come up on in the office and then immediately ask someone to call 911 and ask someone else to get the AED.
After the debate the risk of trump was even clearer. All this talk has made me really lose a lot of respect for people who I thought were much smarter. Get a grip.
People like us know that. The 'passive citizenry' for want of a better term - the people who don't think about politics very often and feel remote from the processes and the people driving things - will apply different reasoning. They may well have faced getting the car keys off their dad or grand dad or having to put a reluctant parent into aged care. When I looked at Biden in that debate, I totally saw my dad aged 91 beginning to slide from still being sharp as a tack to losing all his faculties.
Rfk jr is the only sane choice. Look into him for yourself and stop beleving the lies about him being anti vax etc... The corporations running the media dont want rfk jr, this is not a comspiracy theory he is running on limiting corporate power....
I remember when I first learned about hierarchy and internalized it. I was 7 years old and a peer told other peers that I said something I did not say and they all turned against me. I was shocked and I saw this peer who was lying about me rise in stature as I sank. I saw the rules of this hierarchical system at 7 - for someone to be high someone else must be low. But I couldn’t internalize it and play along with it because deep inside me I believe that when you are doing well and someone else is not, you should try to raise them up. Do you believe that to survive you must tread on the weak when they are weak. Democracy is a community not one man. How we treat one man is how we understand democracy. I know the appeal of the pragmatic, the belief that we need to win at all costs. But check in on yourself - is that really you? Isn’t that Donald Trump?
@@nortonyatzee7254 No president ‘makes decisions all by himself’ nor should they. Presidents have advisers and an entire administration. Too many Americans have this idea that presidents run the country single-handedly.
There is no defending him any more. Let him finish his term, but we need to move on. Soon. There are many many Democrats that could be a better representative of their party and this country. Not choosing a successor now would be malpractice.
I'd still vote for him, but Biden never should have run a second time, he is simply too old. but the sad thing is , this is overshadowing how awful Trump actually was , he is an appalling creature.
@@dangavel1283 Yes, the focus needs to be put back on Trump and the hundreds of ways and reasons he is unfit to be president. This discussion about Biden is, as you said, overshadowing or hiding the threat of another Trump presidency. It’s not even like Trump did a good job in the debate, either.
Something not one talking head has mentioned. The Democrat National "Committee" made the rules and they can change the rules. The committee can convene and change the rules and open up the convention. Does anyone believe that the committee "can't" change the rules?
I wouldn’t vote for Biden especially after last night , which is just a continuation of the way he usually presents himself. I couldn’t understand what his words were or his ideas either. He seemed feeble, weak and childish. RFK Jr. is the candidate of my choice, but Trump is definitely superior to Biden.
Haha,"that line was a little bit wrong". We liberals say that because we don't want to admit that our candidate isn't up to govern. We say we'll be can govern just not campaign. No, he can't govern. If he can, maybe anyone can? Trump could, and he is a complete dufus. But that's a low bar. We need a better candidate, now. Not excuses about how he just can't communicate effectively but oh he can still govern. Such lame excuses. And it's tempting to apply them because nobody wants to go in front of a bunch of Republicans and flat out say, our candidate can't govern. But he can't, neither can trump. But neither, can Biden
The problem is I see it. At his age being tired is look at what age he is at. Then he’s got a cold, which can take a little bit out of you. But again, it falls back on. What age is this man. So now the rest of us look at it as he’s weak again his age plays into this. Honestly, I could not vote for him. He is the president of the United States of America. Being tired and having a cold is not an excuse to perform poorly. He is not up for the job. This is not running a liquor store job. This is the United States of America. And a massive population depending on him. But you cannot convince me to vote for this man. He has aged out four years ago. And now he wants to go another four years.President Joe Biden go enjoy your golden years. Don’t let your wife claiming to be a doctor. Keep you in this race. Be honest with yourself.
One candidate has serious word-finding issues. That said, I see no clear evidence that his wordfinding issues themselves have negatively impacted the policy initiatives he has taken over the past 3.5 years. The other candidate has truth-finding issues, and his inability to assess reality and communicate truth led to a violent insurrection in 2021 during which HE “froze” for over 2 hours while a mob he invited to Washington, violently interfered with a constitutionally sanctioned transfer of power. And for the record…I never thought Trump’s own wordfinding / word-salad pubic speaking style necessary disqualified him.
Dr. Jill doesn't want to go back to Delaware and nurse her husband Joey. She's not going to let Joey be replaced. She said right after the debate that Joey was a good boy and that he "answered all the questions." And Joey glowed when she said this. It was obvious that Doctor Jill controls Joey. So forget about Joey stepping down. Not happening.
“Yay, Joey!! You answered all the questions!!” 😄 Sounds like she’s rooting for her a 5yo. Ffs, answering all the questions is the bare minimum in a debate-it’s what you’re supposed to do! Our politics is a corrupt clown show for egomaniacs
Sorry Ross but you would be a far worse president than Biden however senescent Joe is. But you live up to your stereotype. As one commentator said when pointing out the problem isn't Trump, it's the voters, "unfortunately Americans have a very high opinion of themselves".
IDK, people are usually poor under fascism. Everyone had more money under the scary orange man. Also, the current administration was proven to have colluded with tech corporations to censor Americans. Do you know what fascism is? It's when corporations work so closely with the government that they are basically the came thing, like what the current administration has been doing.

Looked at the latest Data for Progress post debate analysis and the impact of the debate on Biden vs Trump isn’t that clear and no other potential replacement is any better than Biden. Media is too quick to make conclusions. Even if Biden is too old for coming years there is a VP. Are you saying Biden needs to be replaced as Pres now? He was good at State of Union and at NC rally yesterday.

The Dems have options. They need to take them. This election is way too high stakes to play with Biden. My decision was made by default, but my vote isn't the one the candidates are fighting for. There's time before the convention so the Dem leadership need to think LONG AND HARD about this.

nah, he's not. consider how many of the big-brain online commentariat are going at biden without getting into the most obvious reality made apparent in the debate - the format was difficult for biden because of his stutter. any normal, rational person would draw attention to this. it was quite obvious that biden was relying more heavily than usual on the sort of mechanisms that he has always used to manage his stutter. we all know he has had a stutter since childhood & that he has to manage it. none of the hot-takers want to say something as plain as, 'we don't really know what causes stutters, but an overview suggests it's partly genetic, & partly a learned response whereby the brain fragments spoken responses in particular circumstances. it's absolutely clear that biden was doing this in this debating format, against donald trump, with the moderators moderating it as they were.' it really is as simple as that but not only that, this literally comes on the heels of the same commentariat wondering whether trump had made a mistake of lowering expectation regarding biden to a point that it will make biden look better than otherwise. that is to say, they have literally spent the last week telling everyone how low expectations work to biden's favor. the next day, in an incredibly early debate, biden himself lowers expectations because of a lifelong stutter hampering his ability to appear sharp. where are the people saying, we know biden is sharp af. his record speaks for itself. this debate - & his obviously flawed performance in it - is the perfect springboard for biden-harris 2024. people might want style, but they need substance. all this did was set biden up to drive home that reality people also need to watch the vp's response, where she appeared magnificent, imo online hot-takers need to start doing the work, enabling biden-harris 2024, because pretty soon people are going to start judging whether the last ten years has been marked by not just a failure of traditional media, but also by new media, consistently trying to make themselves more powerful, but abstaining from doing the work that people need them to have been doing
Just switch out the VP with a new, charismatic person like Cory Booker! Everybody thinks the VP will be President sometime in next 4 years. All focus will shift to that new person + re-energize the campaign. MUCH easier to switch out VP than top of ticket.
It's not true that the whole Dem party was panicked after that one bad Obama debate performance against Romney. Everyone just said that Obama was being complacent, was a lil 'rusty' and will have to step up in the next debate, and he did. There's no comparison.
Why are we just now talking about this? Biden's demeanor is not new. It wasn't abrupt. Biden was sharper years ago, but he was always known for his gaffes. If you follow his speeches throughout the years, he has shown signs of decline, but they were blown off. So again, why now?
